This letter is being written to commend two of your Installers (Alex & Tim). It is our feeling that they have worked diligently through all sorts of weather conditions to complete a large and difficult roofing job. In spite of hot, humid conditions and temperatures in the 90s, they have worked to strip the old shingles, install the plywood and new shingles. They have also worked through cool rainy and misty days. For some unknown reason the dumpster was hauled away after their working hours. If my husband hadn't been home to retrieve all their tools, wheelbarrows, harnesses, etc., the tools would have disappeared as well. The men had to finish stripping the old shingles off our porch roof and haul them away in their own personal vehicle. Please be sure to extend our appreciation and satisfaction to your installers for a job well done. They are extremely polite and pleasant young men. It was a joy having them at our house. If only all outside contractors had such devoted and skilled employees. They did a wonderful job at our home.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Cundy’s Harbor

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Cundy’s Harbor, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Cundy’s Harbor.

Will a metal roof hold up through Maine winters with freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes. Interlock's roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum has no iron content, so it cannot rust even when water freezes and thaws in its seams—Cundy's Harbor experiences about 86 freeze-thaw days annually. The four-way interlocking panels (ESR-1790 rated for IBC/IRC) expand and contract uniformly without cracking or splitting. Aluminum's oxide layer self-heals when scratched, and the Alunar 70% PVDF coating remains bonded through these cycles, warranted for 30 years against chalking and fading per ASTM D4214.

How does a metal roof handle heavy snow and ice in Cumberland County?

Metal's smooth surface naturally sheds snow and ice instead of trapping it—Cundy's Harbor receives approximately 130 cm of snow annually. The light weight (Slate profile installs at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means your home's structure bears far less load than asphalt or tile would. Four-way interlocking keeps panels locked together through seasonal movement. Snow guard systems install easily if desired. The standing seam profile offers particularly efficient drainage during melt cycles typical of this region's 1022 mm annual rainfall.

Why does aluminum resist rust better than steel roofing near the coast?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—unlike steel roofing, which corrodes rapidly in Maine's coastal salt air. Cundy's Harbor's salt-laden winds and 3085 annual sunshine hours accelerate corrosion in ferrous metals. Interlock's aluminum develops a protective aluminum oxide layer that self-repairs when scratched. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating (applied to both sides of every panel) adds another 30-year barrier against environmental degradation. This two-layer defense is why Interlock's panels have survived Antarctic research stations and decades of coastal use without rusting.

Is a metal roof safe in Cundy's Harbor where wind gusts can reach 130 km/h?

Completely safe. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed per specification. Cundy's Harbor's typical gusts reach about 129 km/h—well within this rating. The interlocking system distributes lateral force across the entire roof rather than stressing individual fasteners. UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating and ESR-1790 code compliance confirm structural integrity. The lightweight design (Shake profile at 0.58 lb/sq ft) also reduces uplift forces during severe weather.

Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof?

No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile installs at only 0.59 lb/sq ft—approximately 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—and can go directly over most existing roofs without adding structural burden. Cundy's Harbor experiences 130 cm of snow annually; that weight on asphalt stresses the frame far more than this aluminum alternative. The light weight also reduces wind uplift forces during the gusts reaching 129 km/h typical here. Installers can often remove the old roof or leave it in place, making the retrofit simpler and faster.

How well does metal roofing handle Cundy's Harbor's 1022 mm of annual rain?

Metal roofing excels in heavy rainfall. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels create a unified water-shedding surface with no gaps where water pools or penetrates. The system is code-compliant per ESR-1790 (IBC/IRC reissued 2025) for weather-tightness. Each profile—Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Tile, and Standing Seam—directs water off quickly rather than absorbing it like asphalt. Proper installation includes solid decking and underlayment that muffles rain noise while maintaining full leak protection. Combined with 3085 annual sunshine hours and freeze-thaw cycles, this drainage efficiency extends the life of your structure's framing.

Can a metal roof withstand hail, and will it lower my insurance costs?

Yes on both counts. Interlock holds UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurers offer discounts for Class 4-rated roofing because the risk of damage is minimal. The roofing-grade aluminum won't dent or crack under typical Maine hail. Cundy's Harbor's coastal climate and 86 annual freeze-thaw days create conditions where impact resistance matters. Contact your insurer to confirm your specific discount; many homeowners see savings that partially offset the roof's initial cost.

What warranty comes with Interlock metal roofing?

The Guardian lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance for the original owner. The coating itself is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading per ASTM D4214. The warranty transfers once to the next owner (50 years from completion), which adds real value if you sell. This differs sharply from asphalt's 15–20 year typical lifespan and makes metal the last roof you'll buy. Cundy's Harbor's 1022 mm rain and 86 freeze-thaw days are precisely the stressors this warranty protects against.

How much maintenance does an Interlock metal roof require?

Minimal. Unlike asphalt shingles that need periodic repair or wood that rots and splits, Interlock aluminum requires only occasional gutter cleaning and debris removal—the same tasks any roof demands. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating resists algae growth even in Cundy's Harbor's 3085 sunshine hours. No resealing, no granule replacement, no moss treatment. Aluminium won't decompose through freeze-thaw cycles (86 per year here) or succumb to salt-air corrosion. The ESR-1790 code rating confirms structural integrity without active intervention. This low-maintenance design aligns with CALGreen sustainability standards requiring reduced maintenance burden.

Is metal roofing better for the environment than asphalt?

Yes. Interlock panels are approximately 95% recyclable at end of life, eliminating the asphalt tear-off-to-landfill cycle that occurs every 15–20 years. Over a 50-year period, you'd dispose of multiple asphalt roofs; with metal, you disassemble and recycle one. Cundy's Harbor receives 1022 mm of annual rainfall—metal's solid drainage means no runoff staining or granule shedding contaminating groundwater. energy-efficient colors with 0.84 thermal emissivity and up to 0.55 solar reflectance reduce cooling loads. The lightweight profile at 0.41–0.59 lb/sq ft means lower transportation energy. Recycled aluminum content further reduces embodied carbon versus virgin material.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Cundy’s Harbor’s climate?

Yes. Cundy’s Harbor averages about 130 cm of snow, 1022 mm of rain, roughly 86 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 129 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
