Our house experiences high wind and exposure to the elements on the Maine coast. Interlock offered competitive pricing on aluminum shingle roofing. The entire experience was good, from quotation, removal of the old roof, and installation of the new roof.

Review: June 22, 2005 Completion: June 23, 2005

This letter is being written to commend two of your Installers (Alex & Tim). It is our feeling that they have worked diligently through all sorts of weather conditions to complete a large and difficult roofing job. In spite of hot, humid conditions and temperatures in the 90s, they have worked to strip the old shingles, install the plywood and new shingles. They have also worked through cool rainy and misty days. For some unknown reason the dumpster was hauled away after their working hours. If my husband hadn't been home to retrieve all their tools, wheelbarrows, harnesses, etc., the tools would have disappeared as well. The men had to finish stripping the old shingles off our porch roof and haul them away in their own personal vehicle. Please be sure to extend our appreciation and satisfaction to your installers for a job well done. They are extremely polite and pleasant young men. It was a joy having them at our house. If only all outside contractors had such devoted and skilled employees. They did a wonderful job at our home.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Cooks Corner

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Cooks Corner, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Cooks Corner.

How does a metal roof handle Maine's heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles?

Interlock's four-way interlocking panels shed snow efficiently because aluminum conducts heat and its smooth surface resists ice buildup better than asphalt. Cooks Corner averages about 130 cm of snow annually and experiences roughly 86 freeze-thaw days per year—conditions that cause shingles to curl and crack. Aluminum has zero moisture absorption, so it won't rot or delaminate when water infiltrates. The panels interlock so tightly that snow melt and rain cannot penetrate the seams, and the system is warranted to resist wind gusts up to 129 km/h, which often accompany nor'easters. Snow guards are available if you want to control slide-off.

Can an aluminum metal roof rust or corrode in Maine's damp climate?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—instead, it forms an invisible oxide layer that self-heals when scratched, protecting the alloy underneath indefinitely. In Cooks Corner's wet environment (about 1022 mm of annual rainfall), this is a decisive advantage over steel roofing, which corrodes from inside out once the coating breaks. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating applied to both sides of every panel, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. This dual-sided protection is especially important in salt-air regions and areas with high moisture. Your roof will not require rust treatment or repainting.

Why do asphalt shingles fail faster in Maine than metal roofing?

Asphalt is porous and absorbs water; when temperatures swing around freezing (Cooks Corner sees about 86 freeze-thaw days yearly), trapped water expands and contracts, cracking and curling the shingles from within. Aluminum is non-porous and dimensionally stable—it expands and contracts uniformly without damage. The interlocking panel system ensures water runs off rather than pooling or wicking into seams. Because aluminum also reflects rather than absorbs heat, it experiences smaller temperature swings than dark asphalt, reducing stress on the material. Combined with a 30-year coating warranty and the Guardian's lifetime limited material warranty against splitting, cracking, and curling, an Interlock roof outlasts asphalt by decades in freeze-thaw climates.

Is an aluminum metal roof secure in Maine's coastal and nor'easter winds?

Yes—Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h), and Cooks Corner's typical wind gusts average around 129 km/h. The panels lock together on all four sides, preventing uplift and the cascade failures that occur when individual asphalt shingles tear away. Each interlocking seam acts as a structural tie, distributing wind load across the entire roof. The system is listed under ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 (IBC/IRC, reissued 2025) for wind resistance. This is why metal roofs remain intact after storms that leave asphalt roofs partially missing—the engineered interlocking design transfers lateral force through the system rather than relying on adhesive or nails alone.

Does Interlock's aluminum roof hold up to Maine hailstorms, and can it lower insurance costs?

Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This non-combustible, damage-resistant profile qualifies for insurance discounts with many carriers, and some homeowners recover part of the installation cost through lower premiums. While Cooks Corner rarely experiences severe hail, the Class 4 rating means your roof is protected against the worst impacts without compromising warranty coverage. Unlike asphalt (which splits and loses impact resistance with age), aluminum retains full impact resistance throughout its life because the material itself does not degrade. Contact your insurer before installation to understand your specific discount eligibility—the investment often pays for itself in premium reductions within 10-15 years.

How much maintenance does an Interlock metal roof need in Maine?

Aluminum requires virtually no maintenance—no coating reapplication, no patching, no seasonal inspection. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish remains stable and color-fast for 30 years (measured by ASTM D4214 and D2244 standards), and the aluminum itself never rots, rusts, splits, or curls. In Cooks Corner's 1022 mm annual rainfall and 130 cm snow environment, you'll never need to replace individual panels due to weather damage. Compare this to asphalt (patching every 5–10 years), wood shake (annual maintenance and rot risk in freeze-thaw climates), or tile (broken pieces after hail or impact). The system is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance, meaning lower long-term costs and zero disruption to your life. Gutters and flashing require standard care, as with any roof.

Can my house's frame support a metal roof, or do I need structural reinforcement?

Interlock's panels are extraordinarily light—the Cedar Shingle installs at about 0.41 lb/sq ft, and the Mediterranean Tile profile (which replicates heavy clay or concrete tile) weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it roughly 96% lighter than real tile. This means no structural engineer visit, no beam reinforcement, and no unexpected construction costs. Most homes in Cooks Corner can support an Interlock roof directly over an existing asphalt roof without any structural changes because the weight penalty is zero. Compare this to slate tile (40+ lb/sq ft) or concrete tile (15–20 lb/sq ft), which often require framing upgrades costing $5,000–$15,000. Interlock's light weight also reduces shipping costs and accelerates installation, getting your new roof watertight faster.

Will an Interlock metal roof reduce my heating or cooling costs in Maine?

Interlock offers energy-efficient colors with thermal emissivity up to 0.84 and solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny), meaning the roof reflects heat that dark asphalt absorbs. In Cooks Corner's 3085 annual sunshine hours, this reflectance reduces cooling demand in summer and prevents excess heat absorption that accelerates asphalt aging. While Maine's 8.6°C mean temperature and 130 cm of snow mean heating dominates your energy use, the reflective profile still prevents summer peak loads and reduces air-conditioning runtime on warm days. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating confirms measurable thermal performance. Over a 40-year lifespan, the cumulative energy savings and complete absence of heat-driven deterioration (which shortens asphalt life) contribute to true cost of ownership advantage.

What makes Interlock's warranty better than asphalt or other metal roofs?

The Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited, non-prorated material coverage for the original owner—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It's also one-time transferable, giving the next owner 50 years from completion. This means if you sell your home, the new owner inherits decades of remaining coverage with no gaps or step-downs. Asphalt warranties typically last 20–30 years and are prorated (you pay more for claims in year 10), and many other metal roofs require re-coating or limit coverage to 30 years. Interlock's panels are manufactured in Delta, BC, since 1998 and installed from coastal salt-air homes to Antarctic research stations, backing this warranty with real-world durability data. The Guardian covers the exact wear modes that plague Maine roofs (freeze-thaw damage, moisture intrusion) without degradation over time.

Who installs Interlock roofs in Cooks Corner, and how long does the project take?

Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. has served the region since 1999 and is the local installer for Cooks Corner and surrounding areas of Cumberland County. The team understands Maine's freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snow loads (about 130 cm annually), and wind exposure (gusts to 129 km/h), so installation follows protocols specific to our climate. Most residential projects take 5–10 days depending on roof size and existing conditions. A key advantage is that Interlock installs over existing asphalt roofs in many cases, eliminating costly tear-off and landfill fees. The local installer also coordinates with your insurance for impact-rating discounts and ensures the ICC-ES ESR-1790 installation standards are met. Current promotion offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation cost.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Cooks Corner’s climate?

Yes. Cooks Corner averages about 130 cm of snow, 1022 mm of rain, roughly 86 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 129 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
