Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Gray, Maine
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
This letter is being written to commend two of your Installers (Alex & Tim). It is our feeling that they have worked diligently through all sorts of weather conditions to complete a large and difficult roofing job. In spite of hot, humid conditions and temperatures in the 90s, they have worked to strip the old shingles, install the plywood and new shingles. They have also worked through cool rainy and misty days. For some unknown reason the dumpster was hauled away after their working hours. If my husband hadn't been home to retrieve all their tools, wheelbarrows, harnesses, etc., the tools would have disappeared as well. The men had to finish stripping the old shingles off our porch roof and haul them away in their own personal vehicle. Please be sure to extend our appreciation and satisfaction to your installers for a job well done. They are extremely polite and pleasant young men. It was a joy having them at our house. If only all outside contractors had such devoted and skilled employees. They did a wonderful job at our home.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Gray
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Gray, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Gray.
How does a metal roof handle Gray's heavy snow loads and freeze-thaw cycles?
Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels shed snow efficiently and resist the 91 annual freeze-thaw cycles that crack asphalt and wood shingles. Aluminum expands and contracts minimally compared to other materials, and its non-porous surface won't absorb water that leads to ice dams. Gray averages about 153 cm of snow yearly—the smooth profiles like Slate and Standing Seam are engineered to release snow safely without pooling melt. Optional snow guards keep debris contained if needed. The lightweight design (Shingle at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means no structural reinforcement is required, even when snow accumulates.
Will a metal roof rust in Maine's wet climate?
No—Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209), which contains no iron and cannot rust. The material forms a self-healing oxide layer that repairs itself when scratched, protecting against moisture year-round. Coating protection is doubled: Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish is applied to both sides of every panel, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214/D2244). With Gray's 926 mm of annual rainfall and 153 cm of snow, this dual-layer defense matters. Interlock's aluminum has been installed from coastal salt-air homes to Antarctic research stations since 1998, proving durability in extreme wet conditions.
Do metal roofs survive Maine's freeze-thaw weather?
Yes—aluminum's material properties make it ideal for freeze-thaw environments. Unlike asphalt shingles that become brittle and crack during the 91 freeze-thaw days Gray experiences annually, and unlike wood that swells and splits, aluminum remains dimensionally stable. Its coefficient of expansion is low, so repeated temperature swings from well below freezing to above don't degrade the panels or seals. The Alunar coating is tested for cold-climate impact and remains flexible. Combined with the lightweight design (Shake at 0.58 lb/sq ft) and four-way interlocking, the roof resists the mechanical stress that destroys conventional roofing in climates like Gray's.
Can metal roofing withstand Gray's wind gusts?
Yes. Interlock panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Gray's typical wind gusts reach about 115 km/h, well within this rating. The four-way interlocking system—each panel locks on all sides—distributes wind load across the entire roof rather than relying on nails or screws that can fail. This design is validated by ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 (reissued 2025, IBC/IRC compliant). Whether you choose Slate's low profile or Mediterranean Tile's deeper texture, the mechanical engagement prevents panels from lifting or separating during the frequent gusts common to Cumberland County.
Does heavy rainfall damage metal roofing?
Interlock's four-way interlocking panel system eliminates the fastener penetrations that cause leaks in conventional shingle roofs. Heavy rainfall—Gray receives about 926 mm per year—flows across overlapping aluminum profiles and into gutters; water never enters the fastener field. When installed over a solid deck and underlayment (standard practice), the system functions like a continuous metal skin. The profiles (Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Tile, Standing Seam) channel water down and away by design. Combined with the self-healing oxide layer that seals micro-scratches, aluminum roofing provides redundant leak protection through 150+ years of equivalent weather exposure.
Is metal roofing better for hail insurance in Maine?
Interlock aluminum roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This durability record often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts (verify with your carrier). While hail is less frequent in coastal Maine than in other regions, the Class 4 rating proves impact resistance that far exceeds asphalt shingles or slate tile. The non-combustible aluminum also meets Class A fire classification (when specified), which insurers recognize for additional premium reductions. With 91 freeze-thaw days annually causing cumulative stress on asphalt, Interlock's proven durability typically lowers long-term insurance costs compared to conventional roofing.
Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for metal roofing?
No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's aluminum roofing is extraordinarily light—Mediterranean Tile installs at about 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile while replicating the same aesthetic. This lightweight advantage means the roof can be installed over most existing structures without costly reinforcement, and it's often installed over existing asphalt shingles directly. Slate and Cedar Shingle profiles are even lighter. By contrast, authentic slate or clay tile often requires expensive structural upgrades. ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 confirms compliance with building codes for standard framing. Gray's 153 cm annual snow load is easily managed by the light weight plus the panels' four-way interlocking strength.
What warranty comes with a metal roof in Gray?
Interlock's Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. The coating carries a separate 30-year warranty against chalking and fading. One-time transferable to the next owner for 50 years from completion, so even after you sell, the roof keeps working. With Interlock installed locally by New England Inc. since 1999, warranty service is accessible. Gray's 926 mm annual rainfall, 153 cm snow, and 91 freeze-thaw days stress conventional roofing constantly—asphalt typically lasts 15–20 years. A roof lasting generations is the real cost advantage.
Can metal roofing look like slate, shake, or tile on my Gray home?
Yes. Interlock offers five profiles: Slate (low-profile elegance), Cedar Shingle (traditional texture), Shake (hand-split appearance), Mediterranean Tile (barrel-tile style), and Standing Seam (modern industrial look). All are aluminum with four-way interlocking—same durability, different visual impact. Each profile is available in multiple colors. Slate and Cedar Shingle suit traditional New England homes; Shake adds rustic character; Mediterranean Tile brings distinctive warmth; Standing Seam reads contemporary. The aluminum construction resists the 91 annual freeze-thaw cycles that deteriorate authentic wood shake and crack slate tile in Maine climates. You get authentic architectural character plus aluminum's immunity to moisture, insects, and rot—without compromising the look you want for your Gray home.

They install all five Interlock profiles and handle warranty service locally, eliminating delays for inspections or repairs.
