Review: July 19, 2021 Completion: August 14, 2019

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in South Windham

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in South Windham, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in South Windham.

Does metal roofing handle South Windham's heavy snow and ice buildup?

Yes—aluminum panels are engineered to shed snow and resist ice dam formation because they conduct heat away from the roof surface. South Windham averages about 121 cm of snow annually across roughly 83 freeze-thaw days, creating ideal conditions for the four-way interlocking design to prevent water infiltration during thaw cycles. The panel profiles (Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Tile) all incorporate design features that promote drainage and prevent ponding, critical when temperatures swing repeatedly around freezing.

How does metal roofing hold up to freeze-thaw cycles?

Aluminum's crystalline structure does not degrade under repeated freezing and thawing, unlike asphalt shingles and wood shake. With roughly 83 freeze-thaw days per year in South Windham and 995 mm of rain, traditional materials expand and contract until they crack and curl. The roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) remains dimensionally stable across these swings. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating (warranted 30 years) provides an additional protective layer that won't chip or peel away during thermal stress.

Can metal roofing resist South Windham's wind gusts?

Yes—Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to specification. South Windham's typical gusts reach about 121 km/h (75 mph), well within this safety margin. The interlocking edge design distributes wind load across the entire roof system rather than concentrating stress at fastener points. This geometry also means fasteners are concealed, eliminating the progressive loosening that causes asphalt shingle blow-off in recurring wind events.

Does metal roofing reduce insurance costs after hail damage?

Interlock aluminum roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurers recognize this durability and offer premium discounts for impact-rated roofs. Because aluminum won't dent permanently under moderate hail (unlike steel), and won't crack or shatter (unlike slate or tile), the roof's protective integrity remains intact. A professional assessment of your policy's eligibility is recommended, but metal roofing's proven performance often qualifies for favorable terms.

How does metal roofing handle South Windham's rainfall?

South Windham receives about 995 mm of rain annually, and Interlock's four-way interlocking design with sealed seams prevents water from penetrating between panels. Each profile (Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Tile, Standing Seam) is engineered to channel water downslope rapidly; the interlocking mechanism creates a labyrinth that forces water outward rather than allowing it to pool or wick backward. When installed over solid decking with proper underlayment, the system performs identically to asphalt in rain events, with no noise increase.

What maintenance does an aluminum metal roof need?

Virtually none beyond basic gutter cleaning. Asphalt shingles require moss treatment, algae scrubbing, and missing-shingle replacement; wood shake demands annual sealing and rot inspection; concrete tile needs periodic re-grouting. Aluminum panels don't split, rot, curl, or degrade. The Alunar 70% PVDF finish (both sides) resists chalking and fading for 30 years, so no re-coating is necessary. South Windham's 3,076 annual sunshine hours won't fade the color because the coating is rated to ASTM D4214 and D2244 standards—meaning it remains vibrant longer than materials that require active maintenance.

Can my existing roof frame support aluminum metal roofing?

Yes—in virtually all cases, no structural reinforcement is needed. The Shake profile weighs only 0.58 lb/sq ft and the Tile profile approximately 0.59 lb/sq ft (about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile). Asphalt shingles weigh roughly 2.5 lb/sq ft; a slate roof can exceed 15 lb/sq ft. This weight advantage means Interlock installs directly over existing roofs in most cases, eliminating tear-off labor and landfill costs. South Windham homeowners avoid the structural assessment, framing upgrades, and installation delays that heavier materials demand.

Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt?

Metal roofing costs more initially but becomes the last roof you install. An asphalt roof lasts 15–20 years and requires full replacement two to three times over a 60-year period; Interlock's Guardian Warranty provides a lifetime limited material warranty for the original owner and remains transferable for 50 years. The combined cost of multiple asphalt replacements, tear-off labor, dumpster fees, and weather-related interruptions typically exceeds a single metal installation. Current promotion: no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation, making the long-term economics substantially more favorable.

Who installs Interlock metal roofing in South Windham?

Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. has served the region since 1999 and specializes in installation throughout Cumberland County. The installer understands South Windham's climate patterns—about 121 cm annual snow, 83 freeze-thaw days, and gusts to 121 km/h—and applies installation practices optimized for these conditions. They carry current ICC-ES certification (ESR-1790, reissued 2025) and can explain how each profile (Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Tile, Standing Seam) performs under local weather. A local team also means faster warranty service and familiarity with town permit and building code requirements.

What does Interlock's lifetime warranty actually cover?

The Guardian Warranty is a non-prorated lifetime limited material warranty for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It's transferable once—the next owner receives 50 years from completion date—a significant advantage when selling. Most asphalt shingles carry 15–25 year prorated warranties that drop to near-zero coverage after ten years. Because aluminum cannot rust and the Alunar 70% PVDF coating lasts 30 years, the warranty terms reflect genuine durability. This transferability also increases your home's appeal to future buyers who recognize the roof's remaining lifespan.
