Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for North Windham, Maine
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
Our house experiences high wind and exposure to the elements on the Maine coast. Interlock offered competitive pricing on aluminum shingle roofing. The entire experience was good, from quotation, removal of the old roof, and installation of the new roof.
We really like our roof.
Interlock was great, and installation was just as told to us by sales. The crew worked hard, cleaned area each day and roof looks great! I was impressed by their professionalism and also had a call from home office checking during the install and had a visit from a home office inspector checking progress and quality of install.
The roof looks great Jonathan did a great job of explaining the features of the new roof.the crew was great and very professional and did a great clean up after the installation
Our entire experience; inquiry, ordering, installation, and follow up has been excellent. The roof was justifiably costly and definitely worth the investment. The appearance of our house has been greatly enhanced.
Nazar was awesome to fix roof from winter ice damage. !!
Bought this roofing 20 years ago. It was installed well. Needed improvements to my roof structure were suggested and made to ensure the longevity and worthiness of my roof. All these years later I am still happy I made the investment in my 160 year old home.

Interlock was very professional. They installed my roof in a timely manner and the workmanship was great. Glad I went with interlock. Positive: Responsiveness, Punctuality, Quality, Professionalism, Value Services: Roof damage repair, Roof installation
Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation
All of the above...we had a positive experience and live the look of our roof.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in North Windham
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in North Windham, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in North Windham.
How does a metal roof handle North Windham's heavy snow—about 153 cm per year?
Aluminum's smooth, sloped surface sheds snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt shingles, which trap moisture and promote ice dams. North Windham averages about 91 freeze-thaw cycles annually, a condition that cracks and curls asphalt but leaves aluminum unaffected because it expands and contracts uniformly without degradation. Interlock panels are warranted to handle snow loads per ICC-ES ESR-1790 standards, and optional snow guards prevent sudden slides if you prefer gradual melting.
Will freeze-thaw cycles in Maine damage my metal roof over time?
No. Roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum has no iron, so it cannot rust or rot through repeated freezing and thawing. The material's oxide layer self-heals when scratched, maintaining integrity across roughly 91 annual freeze-thaw days in North Windham. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading, tested under ASTM D4214 standards that simulate exactly this climate stress. Asphalt becomes brittle in cold; aluminum simply cycles without degradation.
Why don't metal roofs rust like I've heard about steel roofing?
Steel contains iron, which oxidizes into rust. Interlock uses roofing-grade aluminum alloy (ASTM B209 3105-H24 / 3003-H24), which contains zero iron and cannot rust by chemistry. Instead, aluminum naturally forms a microscopic oxide layer that protects the metal underneath and self-repairs when scratched. This distinction matters in Maine's 926 mm annual rainfall and salt-air environments. Steel roofs require constant coating maintenance; aluminum roofs do not. The Guardian warranty explicitly covers rusting for the original owner's lifetime.
Can a metal roof withstand North Windham's wind gusts?
Yes. North Windham's typical wind gusts reach about 115 km/h, well below Interlock's 120 mph (193 km/h) wind-resistance warranty when installed to specification. The four-way interlocking panel design locks each piece to its neighbors, distributing lateral force across the entire roof system rather than relying on fasteners alone. This engineering is verified under ICC-ES ESR-1790 code evaluation. Your roof panels move as one unit, not individually, so coastal and mountain gusts typical of this region pose no structural risk.
Does a metal roof rated for hail save me money on insurance?
Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurers offer discounts for Class 4 roofing because claims are rare; contact your agent with the UL 2218 certificate for a quote. In Maine, hail risk is lower than the Great Plains, but severe wind-driven ice and sleet do occur. A non-combustible, impact-rated roof reduces your insurer's risk profile and often qualifies for lower premiums or extended coverage options compared to asphalt.
Is metal roofing light enough to install over my existing roof?
Absolutely. The Interlock Shingle profile weighs only about 0.41 lb/sq ft, and even the heaviest profile—Mediterranean Tile at 0.59 lb/sq ft—is roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. This extraordinary lightness means most North Windham homes require zero structural reinforcement. Installation can proceed directly over existing asphalt or wood shingles, avoiding the cost and mess of a full tear-off. The roof deck absorbs the load as easily as it does standard shingles, simplifying the project timeline and reducing labor.
Is a metal roof really the last roof I'll buy?
The Guardian warranty provides a lifetime limited, non-prorated material guarantee for the original owner and a 50-year term for the next owner—coverage asphalt cannot match. Asphalt roofs last 15–25 years; Interlock installations routinely exceed 25 years in harsh climates with zero decay, splitting, or curling. Over a 40-year horizon in North Windham's freeze-thaw environment, one metal roof installation costs far less than two or three asphalt replacements plus tear-off labor and landfill fees. This is why it's called the last roof you buy.
How much maintenance does a metal roof need in Maine?
Virtually none. Unlike asphalt shingles, which require periodic inspection for cracks and curling, or wood shakes, which need treatment and replacement, Interlock aluminum requires only occasional gutter cleaning and debris removal—standard for any roof. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating protects against Maine's 926 mm annual rainfall and does not chalk, fade, or degrade for 30 years (ASTM D4214). No sealing, no repairs, no patching. The CALGreen-verified design eliminates the maintenance burden that drives homeowners to replace asphalt roofs prematurely.
Is aluminum roofing actually recyclable, or is that marketing?
Aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable and retains its value indefinitely. When an Interlock roof eventually leaves service, it enters the aluminum recycling stream, avoiding the asphalt tear-off-to-landfill cycle that drives millions of tons of waste annually. Recycled aluminum requires 95% less energy to produce than virgin aluminum, so each roof installation supports a closed-loop material economy. In North Windham, choosing aluminum means your roof will never become landfill; it will become cans, airframes, and future roofs. This circular lifecycle is verified and far more sustainable than petroleum-based asphalt.
