Review: July 19, 2021 Completion: August 14, 2019

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Windham

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Windham, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Windham.

How does a metal roof handle Windham's heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles?

Metal roofs shed snow and ice far better than asphalt because aluminum's smooth surface and thermal properties resist ice dam formation. Windham averages about 153 cm of snow annually and around 91 freeze-thaw days per year—conditions that crack and curl asphalt shingles. Interlock's aluminum panels are warranted to 120 mph wind gusts, so they won't lift or separate when snow loads shift or wind accelerates. The four-way interlocking seams also prevent water infiltration during heavy melt cycles, which typically occur multiple times each winter here.

Why can't aluminum roofing rust, and does that matter in Maine?

Aluminum contains no iron—it physically cannot rust, period. Instead, it develops a microscopic oxide layer that self-heals when scratched, protecting the underlying metal indefinitely. This matters enormously in Windham's wet climate: you'll receive about 926 mm of rain per year plus 153 cm of snow melt, creating constant moisture exposure. Unlike steel roofing, which requires ongoing maintenance to prevent rust stains and structural failure, your Interlock aluminum roof needs no rust remediation, no touch-ups, and no replacement due to corrosion—it just keeps working.

Will my metal roof crack or warp from Maine's freeze-thaw weather?

No. Aluminum expands and contracts predictably with temperature swings, and Interlock's engineered panels are designed specifically for freeze-thaw climates. Windham experiences roughly 91 freeze-thaw days annually, with typical winter temperatures cycling above and below freezing repeatedly. Asphalt, wood shake, and concrete tile all crack under this stress; aluminum flexes and returns to its original shape every single time. The four-way interlocking system accommodates movement without compromising the weathertight seal, so you won't see leaks, splits, or permanent deformation over decades of Maine winters.

Can a metal roof withstand Windham's wind gusts and nor'easters?

Yes—Interlock metal roofing is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to specification. Windham's typical gust speeds reach about 115 km/h (roughly 71 mph), but nor'easter events can exceed that, so the 120 mph warranty gives you a true safety margin. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels create a continuous mechanical bond that prevents panel separation, uplift, or flutter even in extreme conditions. This design, combined with the ESR-1790 code evaluation for IBC/IRC compliance, ensures your roof won't become a liability during the serious storms that hit this region.

Does Interlock metal roofing hold up in hail, and can it lower my insurance premiums?

Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This non-combustible aluminum roof's durability often qualifies homeowners for insurance premium discounts, especially in high-wind and hail-prone regions. Windham experiences occasional spring hail and gusty weather, so Class 4 impact resistance means you're protected against damage that would require costly claims on asphalt or shake roofs. Contact your insurer about discount eligibility; many carriers recognize the reduced claims history for metal roofing.

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?

Absolutely, when you calculate the total cost of ownership. An asphalt roof lasts 15-20 years in Windham's 926 mm annual rainfall and 153 cm snow, meaning you'll replace it multiple times over a lifetime. Interlock's lifetime limited, non-prorated warranty for the original owner—plus 50 years transferable for the next owner—eliminates the tear-off-and-replace cycle entirely. Your current financing promotion offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation. Over 40+ years, one metal roof costs less than two asphalt roofs, plus you avoid labor, waste disposal, and the downtime of repeated installations.

What exactly does the Interlock warranty cover, and how long does it really last?

The Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited and non-prorated for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. When you sell, the warranty transfers to the next owner for 50 years from completion—a rare benefit that increases your home's appeal and resale value. This dual-term structure reflects Interlock's confidence in the product: aluminum doesn't degrade the way asphalt, wood, or concrete does, so decades of real-world use haven't revealed hidden failure modes. In Windham's harsh climate, this warranty means you can install and forget—no surprise repairs, no degradation surprises.

How much maintenance does a metal roof require compared to asphalt or shake?

Metal roofing requires virtually none. Asphalt shingles need moss treatment, debris clearing, and caulk re-sealing every few years, especially in wet climates like Windham's (926 mm rain annually). Wood shake demands annual inspection, fungicide application, and replacement of rotted or split shakes—a constant expense. Interlock aluminum requires only occasional rinsing to maintain appearance; the Alunar® 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading and sheds dirt and algae naturally. CALGreen verification confirms the reduced-maintenance design, so you're not trading upfront cost for ongoing labor costs.

Can a metal roof look like slate, cedar shake, or tile instead of 'tin'?

Yes—Interlock manufactures five distinct profiles: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Standing Seam, and Mediterranean Tile, each with authentic visual depth and dimension. All use the same four-way interlocking aluminum construction and Alunar® coating system, so they perform identically in Windham's freeze-thaw cycles and heavy snow. The Mediterranean Tile profile is about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile, so you can install it over most existing roofs without structural reinforcement—a major advantage given the 153 cm annual snowfall and loading requirements. Choose your aesthetic without sacrificing durability or installation simplicity.

How long does installation take, and can you install over my existing roof?

Interlock's light weight—the Shingle profile installs at just 0.41 lb per square foot—allows installation over most existing asphalt, shake, or tile without structural reinforcement or tear-off. This approach eliminates landfill waste and shortens the project timeline significantly. Installation typically completes in days rather than weeks, minimizing disruption to your daily life. Your local installer, Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc., has served this region since 1999 and manages permitting, underlayment, and weatherproofing to ESR-1790 code standards. They'll walk you through the specific process and timeline for your home during the consultation.
