Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Frye Island, Maine
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |

| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
Our house experiences high wind and exposure to the elements on the Maine coast. Interlock offered competitive pricing on aluminum shingle roofing. The entire experience was good, from quotation, removal of the old roof, and installation of the new roof.
We really like our roof.
Interlock was great, and installation was just as told to us by sales. The crew worked hard, cleaned area each day and roof looks great! I was impressed by their professionalism and also had a call from home office checking during the install and had a visit from a home office inspector checking progress and quality of install.
The roof looks great Jonathan did a great job of explaining the features of the new roof.the crew was great and very professional and did a great clean up after the installation
Our entire experience; inquiry, ordering, installation, and follow up has been excellent. The roof was justifiably costly and definitely worth the investment. The appearance of our house has been greatly enhanced.
Nazar was awesome to fix roof from winter ice damage. !!
Bought this roofing 20 years ago. It was installed well. Needed improvements to my roof structure were suggested and made to ensure the longevity and worthiness of my roof. All these years later I am still happy I made the investment in my 160 year old home.

Interlock was very professional. They installed my roof in a timely manner and the workmanship was great. Glad I went with interlock. Positive: Responsiveness, Punctuality, Quality, Professionalism, Value Services: Roof damage repair, Roof installation
Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation
All of the above...we had a positive experience and live the look of our roof.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Frye Island
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Frye Island, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Frye Island.
Will a metal roof handle Maine's freeze-thaw cycles?
Yes—aluminum actually thrives in freeze-thaw conditions. With about 91 freeze-thaw days per year in Frye Island, your roof faces constant expansion and contraction. Aluminum's atomic structure handles that naturally; it doesn't absorb water like wood shakes do, so ice can't penetrate and crack it from inside. The Alunar coating is warranted 30 years against cracking and chalking even under this cycling stress. You get a roof that won't split, rot, or curl the way asphalt and wood do.
How does Interlock metal roofing perform under heavy snow load?
Frye Island averages about 153 cm of snow annually, but your metal roof won't buckle under it. The Shake profile weighs only 0.58 lb/sq ft and the Slate just 0.41 lb/sq ft—light enough to install over your existing roof without structural reinforcement. Snow slides off more readily than asphalt because the smooth interlocking panels create fewer friction points. Add optional snow guards if you want to manage runoff direction. The four-way interlocking system keeps panels secured even when thermal stress from melt-freeze cycles tries to shift them.
Will heavy rain cause leaks in a metal roof?
No. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels overlap so tightly that water has nowhere to go but down the slope and off the edge. Frye Island gets about 926 mm of rain yearly—plenty of stress-testing conditions for this design. The interlocking seams have been proven in coastal salt-air installations and even Antarctic research stations where conditions are far more extreme. Proper underlayment (part of a professional installation) provides secondary protection, and the ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation confirms the design meets IBC/IRC water-shedding requirements for your climate zone.
Can metal roofing handle Maine coastal wind gusts?
Absolutely. Frye Island typically sees gusts around 115 km/h, and Interlock panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The four-way interlocking mechanism locks each panel to its neighbors on all sides, preventing uplift and flutter that can destroy asphalt or shakes in high-wind conditions. That's why the design is installed on homes from salt-air coasts to mountain ridges. When a contractor uses the correct fastening pattern and compatible underlayment, you're protected well beyond local wind extremes.
Is a metal roof better in hail, and will insurance notice?
Yes on both counts. Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. That's genuine third-party certification, not marketing. Some insurers recognize this and offer premium discounts because metal roofs reduce claims frequency compared to asphalt. Talk to your agent about your specific policy, but bring the UL 2218 documentation; it's the language insurance companies speak. Non-combustible aluminum also qualifies for Class A fire rating, which can lower premiums in some cases.
Why won't an aluminum roof rust like steel roofing does?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains zero iron. Steel roofs oxidize and fail in salt-air environments; aluminum develops a transparent oxide layer that actually self-heals when scratched. Frye Island's proximity to coastal conditions means airborne salt exposure is a real concern for steel, copper, or galvanized products. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209), plus the Alunar fluorocarbon coating is applied to BOTH sides of every panel for extra protection. Result: no rust, no corrosion, no surprise deterioration after 10 years like you see with other metals in coastal Maine.
What maintenance does a metal roof actually need?
Far less than asphalt or wood. Asphalt needs patching, curling-shingle replacement, gutter clearing, and moss treatment—continuous work over its 15-to-20-year lifespan. Wood shakes split and curl within 5-to-10 years in Maine's 91 annual freeze-thaw days. Metal roofing? Rinse it annually if you're near salt spray; otherwise, inspect gutters and flashing like you would with any roof. The CALGreen verification confirms Interlock meets reduced-maintenance material standards. No algae grows on aluminum, no nails back out, no sections degrade while others stay intact. One roof, one maintenance rhythm, for decades.
Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt?
Measure it over the roof's full lifespan, not the first bill. Asphalt costs less upfront but needs replacement every 15-to-20 years; metal installs once and lasts longer than you'll own the house. The Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited and non-prorated for the original owner—covers rusting, rotting, cracking, curling, everything structural. Add the one-time transferability to the next owner (50 years total from completion), and you've made an investment that survives the purchase cycle. Energy savings from energy-efficient colors (up to 0.55 solar reflectance) offset some costs. Potential insurance discounts on hail and fire help too. Current promotion offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation.
How long does metal roof installation take, and can it go over my old roof?
Installation typically takes 2-to-5 days depending on roof size and complexity. One major advantage: at 0.41-to-0.59 lb/sq ft, aluminum panels install directly over most existing asphalt or wood roofs with no structural reinforcement required—unlike slate or clay tile, which can be 96% heavier. That saves demolition time, cost, and landfill waste. Your local installer, Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc., has served this region since 1999 and knows the local building department requirements. They'll confirm roof attachment points, verify underlayment needs, and schedule around weather. Expect crews to work roof-to-ridge in organized sections to ensure water-shedding integrity throughout installation.
Does a metal roof reduce cooling costs in summer?
Yes, especially in colors with high solar reflectance. energy-efficient Interlock profiles achieve thermal emissivity of 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny), reflecting heat that asphalt absorbs and re-radiates into your attic. Frye Island gets about 3,051 sunshine hours per year—enough exposure for reflective coatings to make a measurable difference, particularly on south-and west-facing slopes. You won't cool an uninsulated attic with a metal roof alone, but when combined with proper attic ventilation and insulation, cool-roof colors reduce the thermal load your AC or fans must handle. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating backs this performance, and the 30-year coating warranty ensures reflectivity doesn't degrade over decades.
