Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Cummington, Massachusetts
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |

What our customers are saying:
I've had an Interlock metal roof on my house and garden shed for two years now. It's absolutely gorgeous. Everyone thinks it's a slate roof! I've had no problems with it. The installation was amazing! A crew of 11 showed up early in the morning and were almost completely done in one day on both buildings. They were so professional. I highly recommend Interlock for both their high quality product and their great people.
Just a note about the roof we installed in March of 2003. The first thing that we have to say is that the roof looks wonderful; it’s the best one on the street. A neighbor two houses down the street had a new asphalt roof installed shortly after we had our Interlock Roof installed. The neighbor across the street remarked that our roof looked a lot better than the neighbor's. We have had quite a few neighbors stop and ask about the roof and remark how good it looks. Having the chimney flashed with a solid flashing (instead of step flashing) and the ducts matching the roof really makes the roof look finished off. Also, having them put vents on the back which match the roof looks finished off, so they are not noticeable. As far as the workmen and the quality of workmanship, we feel that it was done very professionally. We asked that they not start working until 8:00 am, and they waited until 8:30 am to start. They kept the grounds very clean even when they were stripping the roof. They hung tarps so nothing could or would damage either the house or any plants which are around the house. They were very friendly and courteous. In closing, we are very pleased with the roof and the professionalism of the workers.
We recently had your Interlock Roofing System installed on our home. It has now been about 3 months since the roof was installed. We receive many compliments on how beautiful the roof looks. Your installers were polite, fast, cleaned up the area daily and did a full clean up after the job was completed.
Very pleased so far.
They broke the dish to my internet, when they were on the roof. I had to have it fixed myself.
I decided to go with an asphalt roofer instead.
The expense was too high for our project
I could speak to another company representative and discuss the pricing aspect of it. I am really reached out at this point. I do not have a lot of faith because of the price aspect. I am interested in the commute with the price aspect with someone.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Cummington
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Cummington, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Cummington.
How does a metal roof handle Cummington's average 136 cm of snow each year?
Aluminum panels shed snow efficiently due to their smooth, hard surface and the interlocking four-way design that prevents wind-driven infiltration. Cummington receives roughly 136 cm annually with gusts reaching 119 km/h, conditions that can create ice dams on asphalt; aluminum's continuous thermal conductivity allows trapped heat to dissipate evenly, reducing ice blockage. Snow guards can be installed where desired. The material's negligible weight—Slate profile at 0.41 lb/sq ft—means your structure handles the seasonal load without reinforcement, even when snow accumulates.
Will freeze-thaw cycles in Hampshire County damage an aluminum metal roof?
No—aluminum thrives in freeze-thaw climates because it contains no iron and cannot rust. Cummington experiences approximately 90 freeze-thaw days yearly, a harsh cycling pattern that cracks asphalt and splits wood shingles. Aluminum's oxide layer self-heals when scratched, and the 3105-H24 alloy (ASTM B209) resists corrosion even through repeated freezing and expansion. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating, warranted 30 years against degradation, remains intact through these cycles, protecting the substrate indefinitely.
Why does Interlock use aluminum instead of steel for roofing in wet climates?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes and corrodes in steel roofing. Cummington's 1056 mm annual rainfall and seasonal salt air exposure would devastate steel within years; aluminum develops a self-healing oxide barrier instead. Interlock applies Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon to both panel sides, doubling protection in humid climates. The Guardian lifetime limited warranty explicitly covers rusting, giving you certainty that neither the material nor coating will fail from moisture exposure, no matter how many decades pass.
Can a metal roof survive Cummington's wind gusts, which reach 119 km/h?
Yes—Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist sustained wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h), which exceeds typical gusts in Hampshire County. The interlocking system distributes wind load across the entire roof plane rather than relying on fasteners alone, a critical advantage during nor'easters and spring storms common to this region. When installed to specification over solid decking with proper fastener patterns, the panels perform at UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—making them suitable for exposed locations where traditional shingles frequently fail.
Does a metal roof qualify for insurance discounts in Massachusetts, and how tough is it really?
Many insurers offer premium reductions for Class 4 impact-rated roofing. Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4—the highest rating—with aluminum panels that withstand hailstones up to 1.5 inches; the Guardian warranty covers perforation from impact at this severity. While Cummington's climate history shows typical spring weather rather than frequent severe hail, the Class 4 rating provides peace of mind and documented proof of durability for lenders and insurers. Contact your agent with the ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation report and UL 2218 certificate to confirm applicable discounts.
Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to replacing asphalt shingles every 20 years?
Over a 50-year horizon, aluminum is substantially cheaper. Asphalt requires replacement every 15–20 years in climates like Cummington's (136 cm snow, 1056 mm rain, 90 freeze-thaw cycles annually)—that is three to four tear-off and disposal cycles. Each cycle costs removal labor, haul-away fees, and new material. Interlock's Guardian warranty is lifetime limited for the original owner, transferable 50 years to the next owner; you install once and never buy a roof again. Current promotion: 10% off installation or no payments and no interest until Spring 2027. The payoff is elimination of landfill waste and decades of protected shelter.
Will I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof, or can it install over my existing shingles?
No reinforcement needed. Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile, the heaviest aesthetic, weighs only 0.59 lb/sq ft—approximately 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—and the Slate profile installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft. Your existing roof structure already supports asphalt shingles, which are heavier; aluminum actually reduces dead load. This allows installation over most existing roofs without framing upgrades, saving significant labor and expense. Cummington's 136 cm seasonal snow load is easily managed by aluminum's lightweight strength, making direct reroof installation practical and economical.
How does a metal roof prevent leaks in Cummington, which gets about 1056 mm of rain annually?
The four-way interlocking panel system creates a continuous mechanical seal that sheds water downslope without fastener holes or seams exposed to flow. When installed over solid decking with ice-and-water shield and proper drainage, the system performs like a sealed deck—water cannot pond or infiltrate. Cummington's 1056 mm annual rainfall is distributed year-round, intensifying the need for reliable shedding; aluminum's hard, smooth surface offers superior runoff compared to asphalt, which absorbs and degrades over time. The Guardian warranty covers leakage due to material or workmanship defects, and ESR-1790 certification confirms code compliance under IBC/IRC rainfall design loads.
Can a metal roof reduce my heating and cooling costs in New England?
energy-efficient Interlock colors reflect solar heat rather than absorbing it, reducing cooling loads and lowering utility costs. Your roof receives roughly 3019 sunshine hours annually in Cummington; reflective coatings with emissivity of 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny) keep attics cooler in summer and reduce air-conditioning run time. While this region's heating season is longer than cooling, summer heat gain still drives costs. Cool Roof Rating Council certification proves the reflectance claims. Combined with aluminum's thermal conductivity (which prevents ice-dam heat loss), you gain both season advantages: cooler summers and more efficient winter performance than traditional absorptive asphalt.
What maintenance does an aluminum metal roof actually require compared to asphalt or wood shakes?
Interlock aluminum requires only occasional gutter cleaning and inspection—no patching, re-sealing, or coating renewal. Asphalt shingles demand annual inspection, moss removal, and partial replacement within 15–20 years, especially in Cummington's 1056 mm rainfall and 90 freeze-thaw environment. Wood shakes split and curl, requiring individual piece replacement and regular treatment. CALGreen verification confirms Interlock's reduced-maintenance design. The hard Alunar 70% PVDF surface resists algae and dirt adhesion, and the aluminum substrate never rots, splits, or needs painting. Over 50 years, maintenance savings on labor alone recover a substantial portion of the initial investment.
Is a metal roof a good choice for Cummington’s climate?
Yes. Cummington averages about 136 cm of snow, 1056 mm of rain, roughly 90 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 119 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
