Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Northborough, Massachusetts
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
No more problems with moss and lichens, like I had with the " target="\_blank" rel="noopener">asphalt shingles. I am extremely happy with my new Interlock Roofing System and to think it has a lifetime warranty. There have been several rainstorms that last couple of weeks and to me the metal roof had added no additional noise at all. The flat roof is also a welcomed addition. The material quality is tip-notch throughout. A flat roof will normally wear out first; however, this also comes with a lifetime " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty. I have been impressed with Interlock from my first awareness at the local home show. I also did investigation through the " target="\_blank" rel="noopener">Better Business Bureau. During all interaction with Interlock, employees have been professional and courteous. The sales presentations were very informative. I was also able to visit half dozen houses locally that had had Interlock Roofing Systems installed. The benefits of the Interlock roof over an asphalt roof are numerous. In these days of rising energy costs and the high price of fuel, the expected energy savings are welcome. I will also be able to take advantage of the energy credit on my taxes this year. The fact that the ">roofing material deflects the heat versus absorbing it will make the house cooler during the summer months. Working with the installation team of Finn and Alex was a delight. The attention they gave to making sure things were done right was greatly appreciated. From the moment they arrived in the morning, till they went home at night, they were constantly working. During the installation period, there were several rainstorms. Alex and Finn always made sure they had things buttoned up before the storm started. We were lucky enough to get a couple of good days and they took advantage of them by working between 10 and 11 hours those days. If I saw anything that I did not like, it was quickly addressed or the explanation was given why it had to be done that way. The answer was always acceptable to me. They took the time to help me understand the various installation tasks. The longevity of Finn and Alex’s careers with Interlock are testimony to Interlock as a company, their product knowledge and experience levels, and work quality. I would highly recommend Interlock Industries roofs to others.
I had my roof installed in May 2003. I noticed the coating had some peeling in 2021. I contacted them in the beginning 0f June 2021 and by the end of June they had approved my claim. It took 8 months but they replaced my entire roof with no charge at all to me.
I recently had Interlock Roofing System installed on my house; I was greatly pleased and surprised by the prompt and professional manner in which it was installed. My house, being older, required much work (new plywood panelling, and I requested additional work (new chimney, venting, window, solar tunnel, removal of an old venting window, and removal of a light panel). The roofing system looks great. As my neighbor said. "I never thought I would say this about a roof, but your roof looks gorgeous." I would recommend the Interlock Roofing System to anyone.
Services: Roof installation
Critical: Responsiveness Our original roof that was installed in 2011 is fine, but, like other reviewers, it has been impossible to get a quote for a roof on an addition we are planning. The contractor has tried multiple times to get a quote and was repeatedly told they would relay to request. When he got nowhere, I called and was told Jennifer, the installation coordinator, was out sick, but they would send her an email. They agreed to cc me on the email, but they never did. I just tried calling and had to leave a voice message. Does your company want more business or not?! Service: Roof installation --- Response from the owner: Hi Barbara, I understand Mike Rasmussen has been in touch with your husband and your contractor regarding your project, and it’s in the works. Please don't hesitate to contact me directly if you have any questions or concerns. Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Northborough
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Northborough, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Northborough.
Does metal roofing handle heavy snow well? Northborough gets about 120 cm a year.
Metal roofing sheds snow effectively because aluminum panels are non-porous and offer no grip for accumulation. Northborough's annual 120 cm snowfall and typical wind gusts to 104 km/h actually work in your favor—wind naturally clears pitched metal surfaces. The four-way interlocking panels resist uplift during those gusts, and optional snow guards anchor snow until it melts safely. Unlike asphalt, metal won't trap moisture that leads to ice dams in freeze-thaw cycles. With about 93 freeze-thaw days per year here, that durability matters.
How does aluminum hold up through Northborough's freeze-thaw winters?
Aluminum expands and contracts predictably with temperature swings, and because it contains no iron, it cannot rust or weaken from freeze-thaw cycling. Northborough experiences roughly 93 freeze-thaw days annually, plus about 1058 mm of annual rainfall—conditions that degrade asphalt and corrode steel. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating bonds permanently to both sides of the panel and is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading per ASTM D4214. Each expansion cycle actually strengthens aluminum's self-healing oxide layer, making it more resilient than materials that absorb moisture or corrode.
Will an aluminum metal roof rust in Massachusetts's wet climate?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron; instead, a protective oxide layer forms on its surface and self-heals when scratched. Worcester County's 1058 mm annual rainfall and coastal-influenced humidity cannot initiate rust in roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209). The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish applied to both panel sides adds a 30-year-warranted barrier against corrosion and fade. Steel roofing, by contrast, requires paint maintenance and will eventually rust through. Over a 50-year lifespan, aluminum's corrosion immunity saves both repair costs and the structural damage that rust causes.
Is metal roofing hail-proof? Can it reduce insurance costs?
Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty covers hail perforation from stones up to 1.5 inches. Northborough's typical wind gusts reach 104 km/h, and while severe hail is not the primary weather concern here, the Class 4 rating demonstrates impact durability that asphalt cannot match. Some insurers offer discounts for non-combustible roofing or impact-resistant materials; contact your carrier with the UL 2218 rating to explore savings. The warranty's hail coverage typically costs less than the deductible on asphalt-roof claims over time.
How light is metal roofing, and do I need to reinforce my roof structure?
Interlock's Slate profile installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft—so light that most existing roof framing needs no reinforcement. The Mediterranean Tile profile, despite mimicking clay or concrete tile's appearance, weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft, roughly 96% lighter than the real materials it replicates. Northborough homes with older or modest roof structures can upgrade to durable metal without costly engineering or reinforcement. By contrast, genuine slate or tile can require structural upgrades costing thousands. This weight advantage, combined with aluminum's corrosion immunity, means you're installing a 50-year roof without the hidden costs of structural work.
What's the warranty on a metal roof, and does it transfer if I sell?
The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. When you sell, the warranty transfers once to the next owner for 50 years from completion, protecting their investment even after you move. This dual-ownership coverage is rare among roofing warranties and reflects aluminum's genuine durability. Over Northborough's typical 50-year lifespan (with about 3054 sunshine hours per year and 123 cm snow load annually), you'll replace asphalt roofing 2–3 times while a metal roof outlasts most mortgages. The transferable term also strengthens your home's resale appeal.
Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?
Metal roofing costs more initially but is the last roof you'll install. Asphalt shingles in Northborough's climate—with 1058 mm annual rain, 123 cm snow, and 93 freeze-thaw cycles—typically last 15–20 years, forcing two or three replacements over 50 years. Each tear-off and disposal adds $1000–$2000 in labor and landfill fees. Metal roofing, with its lifetime limited warranty and proven 25+ year durability, eliminates those cycles. The current regional promotion offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation, making the comparison even tighter. When annualized over the roof's life, metal often costs less than perpetual asphalt replacement.
How much maintenance does a metal roof require versus asphalt or tile?
Metal roofing requires essentially no maintenance; Interlock's non-porous aluminum doesn't absorb moisture, moss, or algae growth common in Northborough's 1058 mm annual rainfall. Asphalt shingles demand regular inspections for curling, cracking, and granule loss, especially through freeze-thaw cycles. Wood shakes rot and split under moisture. Ceramic tile cracks from impact and freeze-thaw stress. Interlock's Alunar 70% PVDF coating maintains appearance with only occasional water rinsing—no chemical treatments, no sealant recoating, no moss removal. The Guardian Warranty excludes normal weather exposure, confirming that genuine durability requires no ongoing cost. Over 50 years, that maintenance-free profile saves thousands compared to material-specific care routines.
Can metal roofing be installed over my existing roof, and how long does installation take?
Yes—one of metal roofing's major advantages is that it installs over most existing roofs because of its lightweight design (~0.41–0.59 lb/sq ft). You avoid the labor, mess, and landfill costs of a tear-off. Installation typically takes 2–5 days depending on roof size and complexity, with Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. handling the work. The installer secures panels to the existing decking with fasteners that won't rust (aluminum or stainless steel). Over-roof installation also improves insulation and reduces thermal stress on your home. By keeping the old roof intact, you minimize debris and disruption to your family—a significant advantage over asphalt replacement, which can take a week and create dust and noise.
Will a metal roof reduce my cooling costs in summer?
energy-efficient Interlock colors achieve initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84, meaning they reflect rather than absorb the sun's heat—unlike dark asphalt, which heats to 160°F+ and transfers that energy indoors. Northborough receives about 3054 annual sunshine hours; on warm days, reflective metal roofing can reduce attic temperatures by 20–30°F compared to asphalt. The Cool Roof Rating Council rates Interlock's lighter profiles for their cooling benefit. While Massachusetts winters are cold (mean 10.2°C), summer cooling savings and reduced air-conditioning runtime justify the reflective coating. Combined with metal's non-absorbent surface, you get passive climate control year-round that asphalt cannot match.
