Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Champlin, Minnesota
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |

What our customers are saying:
Your presence on the internet is good, everything looks good. Keep doing what you are doing.
Their tools and extensions are still sitting in my backyard.
Yes, would recommend, the house roof looks great. My project is being done in two stages, all is going as good as possible, I think.
Coordination with the dumpster company; follow-up post install - we haven't even been given an Interlock sign to display anywhere.
An end of day wrap up communication would have been nice. We also were not really told about the quality of material they were using. If they want me to rate that they need to explain it. Also, if they could show me the roof visually some way after completion that would be nice. I am unable to physically get up there and look at it.
Well, the roof is on and I guess I owe you, folks, a testimonial. It looks great! We chose a black slate style shingle which accentuates our mansard roof very nicely with crisp, clean lines. We are getting lots of compliments from our neighbors. The best part is knowing that our roof will continue to look great for many, many years – long after conventional asphalt shingles would be cracking, curling, fading, streaking and collecting mold and mildew. The crew was first rate – very professional and efficient. It was fun to watch them work. Every single man seemed to know exactly what to do at all times. The process looked like a choreographed event. They were thorough and cleaned up after themselves at every step and, unlike some roofing jobs I’ve seen, they always immediately replaced what they tore out so that the house was never exposed to weather when they left the job at the end of the day. Finally, we really appreciated the “good faith” method of doing business with Interlock. We didn’t pay a dime up front or during the roofing process. Only after we had made a final inspection and approved the job were we asked for payment. In conclusion, I would highly recommend Interlock roofing to anyone replacing a roof or building a new house.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Champlin
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Champlin, Minnesota. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Champlin.
How does a metal roof handle Minnesota's heavy snow and ice buildup?
Metal roofs shed snow and ice better than asphalt because the smooth aluminum surface and thermal properties resist ice dam formation. Champlin averages about 95 cm of snow annually with roughly 79 freeze-thaw cycles per year—conditions that crack and curl asphalt shingles but don't affect aluminum. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels, warranted to 120 mph wind, lock together so snow can't shift the seams apart. Snow guards are optional if you want to control shedding. The lightweight design (Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means your home never carries the structural burden of heavy slate or tile accumulation.
Does freeze-thaw cycling damage aluminum roofing?
No—aluminum actually improves with temperature swings because it has no iron and cannot rust, even after countless freeze-thaw cycles. Champlin experiences about 79 freeze-thaw days yearly over a mean temperature of 8°C, the exact scenario where asphalt embrittles and wood rots. Aluminum's oxide layer self-heals when scratched, so it doesn't degrade from winter salt spray or UV exposure. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214/D2244), meaning your color stays true through decades of Minnesota winters without the maintenance asphalt demands.
Will a metal roof reduce hail damage and insurance costs in Minnesota?
Interlock's aluminum panels hold a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. That's real protection: many homeowners in hail-prone regions qualify for insurance discounts because metal roofs don't dent, crack, or lose granules like asphalt. While Champlin's annual rainfall is about 796 mm and severe hail is regional rather than local, the durability advantage is permanent. Talk to your insurer about discounts; the combination of non-combustible aluminum (Class A fire) and impact resistance often opens savings that offset material cost over time.
Can aluminum roofing rust in Minnesota winters?
Aluminum roofing cannot rust because the metal itself contains no iron—rust requires iron oxide. Champlin's climate includes wind gusts to 94 km/h and seasonal moisture that would accelerate rust on steel roofing, but aluminum's naturally occurring oxide layer not only prevents corrosion but self-heals when scratched or abraded. Interlock has installed roofs since 1998 in coastal salt-air environments far harsher than Minnesota, proving the material's durability. The Alunar finish is applied to both sides of every panel for extra protection. Over a 50-year lifespan, aluminum never requires rust treatment, repainting, or the maintenance steel demands.
How strong are these metal panels in wind storms?
Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Champlin's typical gusts reach about 94 km/h, so the warranty covers more than double your local worst-case wind. The panels lock together on all four edges, so a gust can't lift or separate them the way it peels asphalt shingles. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 confirms compliance with IBC/IRC wind load standards. Your roof stays intact during spring storms and winter blows that would leave your neighbors filing claims—that's peace of mind built into every seam.
Do metal roofs really save money on cooling costs?
Yes, if you choose an energy-efficient color. Interlock's reflective coatings reach initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny profile) and thermal emissivity of 0.84, rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council. That means the roof bounces back heat that asphalt absorbs and holds. Champlin receives about 3,128 sunshine hours annually, so a reflective metal roof reduces the heat that soaks into your attic during summer. Over a 50-year roof life, that translates to measurable cooling load reduction, especially on south and west exposures. Dark asphalt can reach 160°F in summer; a reflective metal roof stays cooler, lowering your air-conditioning runtime.
Can my house handle the weight of a metal roof like Mediterranean Tile?
Yes, and you'll likely need no structural reinforcement. Interlock's Tile profile weighs about 0.59 lb/sq ft—roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—so most homes rated for standard asphalt shingles accept it directly. Compare that: a concrete tile roof weighs 10-12 lb/sq ft and requires expensive framing upgrades; Interlock's lightweight aluminum delivers the tile look without those costs or delays. Installation can often go over your existing roof, saving tear-off labor and landfill fees. An engineer or local installer can confirm your structure in minutes, but the aluminum design eliminates the structural gamble that concrete or wood shake requires.
How much maintenance does a metal roof need versus asphalt or wood?
Metal requires far less maintenance than asphalt or wood shakes. Asphalt shingles need roof inspections every 2-3 years, algae treatment in humid climates, and granule replacement; wood shakes demand annual cleaning, fungicide sprays, and regular repairs in Minnesota's 79 annual freeze-thaw cycles. Interlock's aluminum? Rinse it with a hose annually to remove pollen and dust; that's it. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance, and it resists the mold and moss that plague asphalt in climates with 796 mm of yearly rain. No re-coating, no splinter replacement, no granule loss. You're buying a roof you can ignore.
Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt?
Metal costs more initially but becomes the cheaper option over a 50-year lifespan. Asphalt typically lasts 15-20 years in Minnesota's harsh conditions (about 95 cm annual snow, 79 freeze-thaw days), so you'll replace it 2-3 times before Interlock's Guardian Warranty expires. Factor in tear-off disposal, underlayment, labor for each cycle, and rising material costs over decades—asphalt's total cost usually exceeds metal by tens of thousands of dollars. Interlock's material warranty is non-prorated for the original owner (lifetime) and transferable once (50 years from completion), protecting your resale value and your buyer's confidence. You're not paying more; you're paying once.
Is metal roofing better for the environment?
Yes. Aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable; when your roof eventually reaches end-of-life (well beyond your ownership), it goes to a metal recycler, not a landfill. Asphalt shingles, by contrast, end up in landfills by the millions of tons yearly because they're nearly impossible to recycle—tear-off waste from Champlin alone contributes to the cycle. Interlock's panels are manufactured in Delta, BC, from reclaimed aluminum, and the lightweight design (Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means less material per roof and lower shipping emissions than concrete tile alternatives. Over 50 years, choosing metal breaks the asphalt-to-landfill chain and closes the loop on aluminum production. You're not just buying durability; you're reducing waste.
