An end of day wrap up communication would have been nice. We also were not really told about the quality of material they were using. If they want me to rate that they need to explain it. Also, if they could show me the roof visually some way after completion that would be nice. I am unable to physically get up there and look at it.

Review: July 30, 2006Completion: June 27, 2006

Well, the roof is on and I guess I owe you, folks, a testimonial. It looks great! We chose a black slate style shingle which accentuates our mansard roof very nicely with crisp, clean lines. We are getting lots of compliments from our neighbors. The best part is knowing that our roof will continue to look great for many, many years – long after conventional asphalt shingles would be cracking, curling, fading, streaking and collecting mold and mildew. The crew was first rate – very professional and efficient. It was fun to watch them work. Every single man seemed to know exactly what to do at all times. The process looked like a choreographed event. They were thorough and cleaned up after themselves at every step and, unlike some roofing jobs I’ve seen, they always immediately replaced what they tore out so that the house was never exposed to weather when they left the job at the end of the day. Finally, we really appreciated the “good faith” method of doing business with Interlock. We didn’t pay a dime up front or during the roofing process. Only after we had made a final inspection and approved the job were we asked for payment. In conclusion, I would highly recommend Interlock roofing to anyone replacing a roof or building a new house.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Medina

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Medina, Minnesota. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Medina.

How does a metal roof handle Medina's snow load and ice dams?

Aluminum's smooth, hard surface sheds snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt, reducing ice dam formation that damages gutters and siding. Medina receives about 95 cm of snow annually across roughly 79 freeze-thaw cycles per year—conditions that crack and curl traditional shingles. The four-way interlocking panels lock together so tightly that wind-driven snow cannot penetrate seams. Optional snow guards are available if you want to manage roof-to-ground snow release on specific zones, but most Medina homeowners find the natural shedding eliminates costly ice dam repairs year after year.

Why does freeze-thaw cycling in Minnesota ruin asphalt but not aluminum?

Asphalt absorbs moisture and expands when it freezes, then shrinks when it thaws, cracking after dozens of cycles. Aluminum is non-porous—it absorbs zero water, so freeze-thaw has no material effect on it. Medina experiences approximately 79 freeze-thaw days per year over a climate where temperatures swing around the freezing point repeatedly. The roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy used in Interlock panels will not crack, warp, or lose structural integrity through this cycling, whereas asphalt typically fails by year 15-18 in this environment.

Can an aluminum roof rust in Minnesota's wet winters and spring snowmelt?

No. Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes and weakens steel roofing. Instead, aluminum develops an invisible oxide layer that actually self-heals when scratched, providing passive corrosion resistance that improves with time. Medina receives about 796 mm of rainfall annually plus snow melt, exposing your roof to sustained moisture. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating on both sides of the panel (warranted 30 years against chalking and fading) adds an extra barrier, so rust and rot are not concerns—they cannot happen to this material.

Can metal roof panels stay attached during Minnesota wind gusts?

Yes. The four-way interlocking design locks each panel to its neighbors on all four edges, and when installed to spec the entire roof is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph. Medina's typical gusts reach about 94 km/h (58 mph), well below the warranty threshold, so normal weather will not stress the system. The panels cannot separate, lift, or curl at the edges the way asphalt shingles do. In the rare event of severe straight-line wind or tornado-force conditions, the material itself is rated, tested, and warranted to stay anchored—insurance companies often recognize this durability.

Do I need to reinforce my house framing to support a metal roof?

No. Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile, which replicates heavy clay or concrete tile, weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft—roughly 96% lighter than the real thing. Even the heavier Shake profile at 0.58 lb/sq ft is a fraction of what slate or tile would demand. Most existing homes can support a metal roof installation directly over the current asphalt shingles without any structural upgrades. This lightweight advantage means lower labor costs, faster installation, and no surprise engineering bills—a major cost and timeline advantage over solid-material alternatives in Medina's older neighborhoods.

How much upkeep does an aluminum metal roof need compared to asphalt or wood?

Virtually none. Aluminum does not split, crack, curl, rot, or lose granules like asphalt or cedar. It requires no treatment, no sealant reapplication, and no periodic replacement of damaged sections. CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance burden. Over 79 freeze-thaw cycles per year, asphalt degrades noticeably while aluminum is unaffected. Gutters and downspouts may need seasonal clearing (standard for any roof), but the roof surface itself is inert and self-protective. This eliminates the annual inspections, repairs, and partial replacements that eat up asphalt's budget advantage by year 10-15.

Is the upfront cost of a metal roof worth it over the life of my home?

Yes, when you factor in lifespan and replacement frequency. Asphalt typically lasts 15-20 years in Medina's climate of 796 mm annual rain and 79 freeze-thaw cycles; you will buy it twice or three times before selling. Interlock's Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, transferable to the next owner for 50 years from completion. This is the last roof you buy. Metal costs more upfront but eliminates the labor, disposal, and material cost of two or three re-roofing projects. Over 40-50 years of ownership, the math strongly favors aluminum.

Who installs Interlock metal roofing in Medina, Minnesota?

Interlock Metal Roofing, the manufacturer and installer, has served the Hennepin County region since 2001. The company manufactures panels at its Delta, BC facility and has installed roofs from coastal salt-air homes to an Antarctic research station—experience that translates directly to Minnesota's variable climate. Working with the maker, not a third-party distributor, means access to factory expertise, precise installation to spec, and the direct warranty relationship. Call Interlock to discuss your Medina home's specific requirements and get a site assessment; local service teams understand the region's snow loads, wind patterns, and installation timeline.

Will a metal roof improve my home's resale value in Medina?

Metal roofing appeals to buyers as a low-maintenance upgrade that eliminates a major future expense—especially important in a climate where replacement happens frequently. The choice of profiles—Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Standing Seam, or Mediterranean Tile—adds design flexibility and curb appeal without the weight, rot, or maintenance liabilities of the real materials. The lifetime warranty (transferable for 50 years) is a significant selling point, as is the knowledge that the new owner will not face roof replacement in their ownership window. Buyers increasingly recognize that a durable, beautiful roof adds both immediate appeal and long-term financial peace of mind.

Can a metal roof reduce cooling costs in Minnesota summers?

Yes, if you choose an energy-efficient color. Reflective finishes on Interlock panels achieve initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (for example, Aged Copper Penny) and thermal emissivity of 0.84, meaning they bounce heat back into the sky rather than absorbing it into your attic. Medina receives about 3,128 sunshine hours per year; darker asphalt absorbs this energy and transfers heat downward, raising cooling demand. Cool Roof Rating Council rating confirms the difference. The energy savings compound over decades, and in Minnesota's moderate summer climate (mean 8°C annually), reflective metal protects your interior while reducing air-conditioning strain on particularly hot days.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Medina’s climate?

Yes. Medina averages about 95 cm of snow, 796 mm of rain, roughly 79 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 94 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
