They could have done a better job with cleaning up the nails and scrap metal, and just not throwing it off the roof in the first place.

Review: June 14, 2016Completion: May 25, 2016

In my case where I wanted the roofing product installed on the sides of my dormers, which was discussed at the time of the agreement of the installation. There was a misconception of how I believed this would be installed on the dormers. There should have been more of an agreement how this was to be installed and what extra products would be needed to accomplish it. If there is a unique or out of the ordinary request for the roofing product installation at the time of the job estimate & agreement for the job to be done. This should be discussed more with installation crew before they get to the work site, so they know that they will need extra materials to do the unique installation. In my case; I needed to go to the building supply store to buy the extra materials to do the unique product installation on the side of the dormers. It is also very early to comment on how the product will perform during high winds & hail; the product installation has only been 3 weeks & there hasn't been a wind or hail storm yet. It has rained since & haven't noticed any leaking.

Visually, the scratches on the dark brown color are very clear. They said they would redo it. Ours was a messy job because we had wooden shakes that were 40 years old. However, they were very courteous and I know it is not always perfect. There are some things I need to contact Alan about fixing. Overall I am happy with it.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Greenfield

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Greenfield, Minnesota. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Greenfield.

How does a metal roof handle heavy snow in Minnesota winters?

Interlock's four-way interlocking panels shed snow safely and resist the ice-dam damage that degrades asphalt shingles through freeze-thaw cycling. Greenfield receives about 95 cm of snow annually across roughly 79 freeze-thaw days, where repeated melting and refreezing crack and curl traditional materials. Aluminum's non-porous surface prevents water absorption, so ice doesn't degrade the panel itself. Metal roofs installed over solid decking with proper underlayment remain quiet during snowmelt and allow snow to slide naturally when conditions permit, reducing dangerous buildup on gutters.

Why does freeze-thaw damage asphalt but not aluminum roofing?

Asphalt absorbs water into its granules and matrix; when Minnesota's 79 annual freeze-thaw days arrive, that trapped water expands as it freezes, cracking and curling the shingles from inside. Aluminum's solid, non-porous 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 alloy absorbs zero moisture, so freeze-thaw cycling cannot degrade it internally. Its oxide layer self-heals when scratched, and the Alunar 70% PVDF coating (warranted 30 years) protects the surface. Over Greenfield's ~796 mm of rain annually, this distinction directly extends roof life.

Can an aluminum roof rust in Minnesota's wet climate?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—rust is iron oxide, and aluminum instead forms a thin, self-healing oxide layer that actually protects the metal underneath. Even in salt-air coastal environments, Interlock panels (coated both sides with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish) remain stable; the company has installed roofs from coastal homes to an Antarctic research station since 1998. For Greenfield's inland location with ~796 mm annual rainfall and typical wind gusts to 94 km/h, this corrosion immunity means no rust staining, no structural weakening, and no replacement cycles forced by oxidation.

Do metal roofs blow off in Minnesota windstorms?

No. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification—far exceeding Greenfield's typical wind-gust peaks of 94 km/h. The mechanical interlock between adjacent panels (not fasteners alone) distributes wind load across the entire roof assembly, so each panel reinforces its neighbors. ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 confirms compliance with IBC/IRC wind standards. This design means spring squalls, summer thunderstorms, and winter gales do not lift, separate, or damage the roof.

Will my house need structural reinforcement for a metal roof?

No structural reinforcement is required. Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile, for example, weighs only ~0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—and can install directly over most existing asphalt roofs without any frame upgrades. The Shingle profile weighs ~0.41 lb/sq ft and Shake ~0.58 lb/sq ft. This extraordinary lightness means Greenfield homeowners avoid the cost and disruption of reinforcing roof trusses or walls. It also simplifies roof replacement logistics and reduces long-term structural fatigue from the dead load that asphalt shingles accumulate over decades.

Does a metal roof help with hail damage and insurance claims?

Yes. Interlock panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many Minnesota insurers recognize this resilience and offer premium discounts for Class 4-rated metal roofs, since claims for impact damage are rare. Greenfield's climate includes occasional severe weather, and metal's proven hail resistance contrasts sharply with asphalt shingles, which dent, fracture, and lose granules under impact. Request your insurer's discount schedule when you install; the premium savings often accelerate payback.

Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?

Metal roofing costs more initially but eliminates the asphalt replacement cycle, making it the last roof you buy. Asphalt shingles last 15–20 years in Minnesota's ~79 freeze-thaw days per year; you'll replace them 2–3 times over 50 years. Interlock's lifetime limited warranty covers the original owner for rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, and curling—with no prorated deductible. Total cost of ownership (material + labor + waste disposal) over 50 years favors metal decisively. Add the one-time-transferable 50-year warranty term for the next owner, and metal roofing becomes the economically rational choice, not a premium upgrade.

How much maintenance does a metal roof require?

Virtually none. Unlike asphalt (requires spot repairs and granule replacement), wood shake (splits and rots in freeze-thaw cycles), or clay tile (cracks and needs repointing), Interlock aluminum panels are CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance. Greenfield's ~796 mm annual rainfall and ~19 km/h mean winds keep the roof clean naturally. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading (measured to ASTM D4214/D2244 standards), so color and finish remain stable. You may rinse debris after storms, but that's optional. This low-maintenance profile means no budgeting for repairs, no contractor calls, and no surprise leaks from material degradation.

How long does metal roofing installation take, and can it go over my existing roof?

Yes, Interlock can install over most existing asphalt roofs without tear-off—eliminating landfill waste and labor cost. Typical installation takes 3–5 days for a single-story home, depending on roof size and complexity. The four-way interlocking system (no visible fasteners) speeds installation and ensures uniform coverage. Interlock Metal Roofing has served the region since 2001, with crews familiar with Wright County homes and weather windows. Over existing roof means minimal interior disruption, no disposal fees, and immediate water protection—the lightweight aluminum panels (0.41–0.59 lb/sq ft) settle easily over the old shingles' solid substrate.

Are metal roofs actually more environmentally friendly than asphalt?

Yes. Interlock panels are approximately 95% recyclable aluminum; at end of life, they return to the aluminum supply chain rather than a landfill. Asphalt shingle tear-offs—needed every 15–20 years in Minnesota's freeze-thaw climate—generate millions of tons of landfill waste annually that never decomposes. By installing a 50-year metal roof (with transferable warranty extending to 100 years of service), Greenfield homeowners prevent 2–3 asphalt-replacement cycles and their associated demolition waste, transport emissions, and landfill burden. The sustainability benefit compounds: one installation replaces multiple short-lived products.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Greenfield’s climate?

Yes. Greenfield averages about 95 cm of snow, 796 mm of rain, roughly 79 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 94 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
