Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Watertown, Minnesota
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |

What our customers are saying:
They could have done a better job with cleaning up the nails and scrap metal, and just not throwing it off the roof in the first place.
In my case where I wanted the roofing product installed on the sides of my dormers, which was discussed at the time of the agreement of the installation. There was a misconception of how I believed this would be installed on the dormers. There should have been more of an agreement how this was to be installed and what extra products would be needed to accomplish it. If there is a unique or out of the ordinary request for the roofing product installation at the time of the job estimate & agreement for the job to be done. This should be discussed more with installation crew before they get to the work site, so they know that they will need extra materials to do the unique installation. In my case; I needed to go to the building supply store to buy the extra materials to do the unique product installation on the side of the dormers. It is also very early to comment on how the product will perform during high winds & hail; the product installation has only been 3 weeks & there hasn't been a wind or hail storm yet. It has rained since & haven't noticed any leaking.
Visually, the scratches on the dark brown color are very clear. They said they would redo it. Ours was a messy job because we had wooden shakes that were 40 years old. However, they were very courteous and I know it is not always perfect. There are some things I need to contact Alan about fixing. Overall I am happy with it.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Watertown
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Watertown, Minnesota. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Watertown.
How does metal roofing handle heavy snow and ice in Minnesota winters?
Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels shed snow and ice reliably because the smooth surface resists adhesion and the lightweight design—about 0.41 lb/sq ft for the Shingle profile—never strains your structure even under Watertown's average 90 cm annual snowfall. The panels are warranted to 120 mph wind resistance, which handles the region's recorded gusts to 97 km/h. Optional snow guards can be installed if you prefer controlled shedding. Unlike asphalt, which becomes brittle during the 81 freeze-thaw cycles typical here annually, aluminum's oxide layer remains flexible and doesn't crack or curl.
Why does freeze-thaw cycling in Wright County damage some roofs but not metal?
Watertown experiences about 81 freeze-thaw days per year—that constant contraction and expansion destroys asphalt and wood shingles by breaking down their binders and causing splits. Aluminum doesn't absorb water, so ice formation inside the material can't crack it. Interlock's 3105-H24 aluminum alloy is engineered to move without degradation, and the Alunar 70% PVDF coating (warranted 30 years against chalking and fading per ASTM standards) prevents UV damage that compounds freeze-thaw stress. After 27 years in production, Interlock panels are installed from coastal salt-air homes to an Antarctic research station—environments far harsher than Minnesota's cycle.
Can an aluminum metal roof rust like steel roofs do?
No. Aluminum contains no iron, so it physically cannot rust. Instead, it forms a thin oxide layer that's self-healing—when scratched or dented, the exposed aluminum instantly begins reforming that protective layer. Steel roofs rely on paint to block rust and fail when that coating wears; aluminum's protection is built into the material itself. Interlock applies Alunar fluorocarbon finish to both sides of every panel for extra defense in salt-air or high-humidity regions. This dual-coating approach means you're protected from top and bottom, with zero rust risk over the 50-year transferable warranty term or beyond.
Will a metal roof get dented in hail, and does it matter for insurance?
Interlock holds a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. That performance often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts; contact your agent with the UL rating. In practice, aluminum's light weight and four-way interlocking design absorb impact energy without transferring it to the structure, and small surface dents (which are cosmetic, not structural) are far less costly to repair than the water damage a punctured asphalt roof causes. Watertown's climate data doesn't highlight severe hail, but when storms do occur, Class 4 protection gives you peace of mind.
How secure is a metal roof in Minnesota wind and storms?
Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to spec. Watertown's typical gusts reach 19 km/h with recorded maximums to 97 km/h, so you're well within that rated capacity. The four-way interlock means each panel is mechanically fastened to the next on all sides, creating a unified system that moves as one rather than catching the wind like individual shingles. This redundancy is why the warranty covers the full wind rating: there's no single fastener or seam that, if it fails, compromises the roof. Proper installation over solid decking is the only variable—our local crews have been installing per spec since 2001.
Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof?
No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's Slate profile installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft—so light that the Tile profile, at 0.59 lb/sq ft, is about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile and can install over most existing roofs without added support. Watertown's typical residential framing easily handles this weight; the real question isn't whether your structure can support it, but whether you want to save money by installing over your existing asphalt instead of tearing it off. That choice is yours. The ICC-ES evaluation report (ESR-1790, reissued 2025) confirms compliance with IBC and IRC code for residential installation at these weights.
Will a metal roof reduce cooling costs in summer?
energy-efficient Interlock colors reflect significant solar heat rather than absorbing it like dark asphalt. The Aged Copper Penny finish, for example, achieves initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84, both measured to Cool Roof Rating Council standards. While Watertown averages about 3163 sunshine hours annually and a cool mean temperature of 7.9°C (so summer cooling isn't as intensive a load as in southern climates), every degree you avoid heating your attic reduces AC runtime and extends shingle life in neighboring properties' radiant zones. The reflective properties are permanent—they don't degrade like asphalt's sun-facing granules—so you keep the benefit for decades.
How long does installation take, and can you install over my existing roof?
Installation timeline depends on roof size and complexity, typically 2 to 5 working days for a standard residential home. One major advantage of Interlock's lightweight design is that you can often install directly over existing asphalt shingles without tearing off—saving weeks of labor and eliminating the cost and landfill impact of shingle disposal. The four-way interlocking panels fasten to solid decking, so the existing shingles act as a secondary moisture barrier. Our local crews have been executing this process since 2001 and can advise whether tear-off or overlay makes sense for your specific roof. Either way, you're looking at a single-phase project, not a multi-stage teardown and rebuild.
What makes the Guardian warranty different, and how long does an Interlock roof actually last?
The Guardian is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. That's stronger protection than most warranties offer because there's no depreciation schedule; defects are covered the same way in year 5 as in year 50. The warranty is one-time transferable to the next owner, giving them 50 years of coverage from completion. In practice, Interlock panels manufactured since 1998 and installed from coastal salt-air environments to Antarctic research stations show no degradation path that would limit lifespan—the aluminum doesn't corrode, the Alunar coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading, and the mechanical interlock doesn't wear. You're buying the last roof you'll need to install.
Is a metal roof better for the environment than asphalt shingles?
Yes. Interlock's aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable at end of life, versus asphalt shingles, which end up in landfills after 15-25 years because their fiberglass mat and bitumen binder resist decomposition and recycling. Over a 50-year period, a home reroofed twice with asphalt generates two full roofs' worth of waste; one Interlock installation produces none, and when eventually recycled, the aluminum re-enters the material stream. Manufacturing is also less energy-intensive than producing replacement shingles every two decades. Watertown's climate—with 81 freeze-thaw cycles annually—actually accelerates asphalt degradation, so the environmental case for one durable aluminum roof over multiple asphalt replacements is especially strong in this region.
Is a metal roof a good choice for Watertown’s climate?
Yes. Watertown averages about 90 cm of snow, 748 mm of rain, roughly 81 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 97 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
