Review: August 15, 2018 Completion: June 8, 2018

Well, I stand corrected. First I want to apologize for the tone of my last email. I was anticipating a high pressure sales pitch, and dealing with some health issues at present, I was in no mood to deal with being pressured to buy something. Frankly, I was pleasantly surprised with Michael. Although he presented a good argument of why and how Interlock was a good roof product, at no time did my wife or I feel pressured into buying your product. Also, as I've been burned a couple of times in the past, I made it a personal rule that I NEVER sign a contract on first meeting. As you can see, apparently I broke my own rule in this case, as my wife and I had already researched other roof products and it appeared that Interlock was a reputable company with many favorable reviews. Also, much of our opinion was based in no small measure in the way Michael Baldassari presented himself, the company, and the product. Having said this, we look forward with anticipation to showing off our new roof and are hopeful that others in our neighborhood will appreciated the beauty and benefits of an Interlock all metal roof as well.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Greenwood

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Greenwood, Rhode Island. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Greenwood.

How does a metal roof handle the snow Greenwood gets every winter?

Interlock's four-way interlocking panels lock snow and ice in place rather than shedding it suddenly, which matters in Greenwood where you average about 75 cm of snow annually. The lightweight design—Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft—means snow load isn't a structural concern like it would be with slate or tile. Because the panels are aluminum, they won't rot or split from repeated freeze-thaw cycles; Greenwood sees roughly 80 freeze-thaw days per year, which weakens asphalt and wood roofing over time. Add a snow guard if you want to control shedding on a steeper roof, but the interlocking design itself handles seasonal accumulation without leaking or sagging.

Will freeze-thaw cycles damage an aluminum metal roof in Rhode Island?

No—aluminum is actually superior to traditional materials in freeze-thaw conditions. Your area experiences about 80 freeze-thaw cycles yearly, which causes asphalt shingles to crack and wood shakes to split, but aluminum's oxide layer self-heals when scratched and won't rot, rust, or split as temperatures swing above and below freezing. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading, so seasonal temperature swings don't degrade the finish. After 25+ years of installation in similar Northeast climates, Interlock panels show no freeze-thaw damage. That durability is why the Guardian Warranty covers cracking, curling, and splitting—defects freeze-thaw cycles typically cause in other roofing.

Can a metal roof keep out Greenwood's 1,200+ mm of annual rain?

Yes—metal roofing is engineered specifically for high rainfall, and Greenwood's average of about 1,264 mm per year poses no challenge to properly installed Interlock panels. The four-way interlocking design creates a tight seal between panels; water runs downhill and off the roof rather than pooling or finding seams. Installation over solid decking with underlayment (often directly over your existing roof, avoiding tear-off) eliminates gaps where water could penetrate. Interlock installs have been deployed in coastal salt-air environments and Antarctic research stations—far harsher than seasonal New England rain. When spec-installed by Interlock Metal Roofing (New England), you get the full Guardian Warranty covering any water leakage into the home.

Do metal roof panels stay fastened in Greenwood's winter wind gusts?

Interlock's four-way interlocking system is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h). Greenwood's typical gusts reach about 125 km/h, so you're covered with margin to spare. The panels lock together on all four sides—top, bottom, left, right—so wind pressure doesn't peel them apart like it does asphalt shingles or standing-seam roofing that relies only on fasteners. UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating means the panels also handle hail up to 1.5 inches without perforation. Winter nor'easters and seasonal gales won't loosen a properly installed Interlock roof; the interlocking design distributes wind load across the whole roof rather than concentrating stress on individual fasteners.

Will a metal roof lower my homeowner's insurance after a hail storm?

Ask your insurer about hail discounts—many carriers offer them for UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated roofing, which Interlock achieves. Class 4 is the highest impact rating available, and Interlock's warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Some insurers reduce premiums when you install a Class 4 roof because claims for hail damage drop significantly. Greenwood's hail exposure is real, and a documented Class 4 rating on your invoice gives your agent the verification they need. Contact a few local carriers before you install and ask specifically whether they offer a discount for Class 4 metal roofing. Even if the discount is modest, the durability—no re-roofing after hail damage—pays for itself over the roof's 50+ year life.

Does an aluminum metal roof need extra support on my old house?

No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's Slate installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft, the Shake at 0.58 lb/sq ft, and the Mediterranean Tile at 0.59 lb/sq ft—roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. Most older Greenwood homes were framed to carry wood or asphalt shingles, so they can easily handle aluminum's featherweight load. You can install Interlock directly over your existing roof, which saves tear-off labor and debris disposal. This retrofit capability is one reason Interlock panels are common on 1950s and earlier homes where owners want the look of slate or tile without retrofitting the structure. Have your local contractor inspect your current decking for soundness, but frame reinforcement is almost never necessary with aluminum roofing.

How much upkeep does an Interlock metal roof really need?

Virtually none compared to asphalt, wood, or clay. Aluminum won't rot, rust, split, curl, or lose granules. A mild annual rinse with water removes seasonal dust and debris—that's it. Asphalt shingles need frequent inspection for damage, especially after Greenwood's seasonal wind gusts and freeze-thaw cycles; wood shakes demand staining and splitting repairs; tile cracks in freeze-thaw. Interlock's Alunar coating handles 1,264 mm of annual rainfall and about 80 freeze-thaw days without chalking or fading for 30 years, per ASTM D4214 testing. The Guardian Warranty is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance, which insurers and resale buyers notice. Gutters still need cleaning, but the roof itself is maintenance-free—no ladders, no treatments, no emergency repairs.

Can aluminum roofing rust in a humid Rhode Island climate?

Aluminum doesn't rust because it contains no iron. When aluminum is scratched or exposed, it forms a thin oxide layer that self-heals and protects the underlying metal—a process called passivation. Steel roofing will rust in Greenwood's 1,264 mm annual rainfall unless constantly protected; salt air from coastal areas accelerates rust. Interlock's roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) is proven in salt-spray environments and Antarctic research stations, far harsher than Rhode Island's inland climate. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating adds a 30-year warranty against chalking and fading, a second line of defense. So even if the coating eventually ages, the aluminum itself will never corrode—you won't face the rust-through failures that steel roofing develops after 15–20 years in this rainfall and freeze-thaw climate.

Will a metal roof keep my Greenwood home cooler in summer?

energy-efficient Interlock colors reflect solar heat rather than absorbing it like asphalt shingles do. Thermal emissivity reaches 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 in cooler colors like Aged Copper Penny, meaning less heat enters your attic. Greenwood receives about 3,075 sunshine hours per year, so a reflective roof reduces cooling load over time. Metal roofing is Cool Roof Rating Council rated—a standard asphalt roof absorbs that heat and radiates it into your home. You won't see a dramatic summer temperature drop in every room, but your air conditioning runs less, lowering electricity bills. Combined with the roof's 50+ year lifespan, energy savings offset some installation cost. Ask your installer which energy-efficiency colors best suit your home's orientation.

Is a metal roof a good investment compared to asphalt shingles?

Yes, when you calculate the full lifespan cost. A typical asphalt roof lasts 15–25 years in Greenwood's freeze-thaw and rainfall climate, requiring replacement two or three times over a 50-year period. Interlock's Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited—non-prorated material coverage for the original owner, then one-time transferable to the next owner for 50 years from completion. You install once, not three times. Factor in: asphalt tear-offs to landfill, labor costs per replacement, rising shingle prices, and maintenance (moss, algae, granule loss). Interlock's maintenance-free aluminum, 50+ year durability, and current promotion (no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation) compress the payback period. Resale buyers pay premiums for metal roofing that eliminates re-roofing risk. Over a home's ownership life, one permanent roof costs less than multiple asphalt replacements.
