Addressed to: Popular Mechanics I have read your recent issue which included a section about roofing materials. I was surprised your excellent publication did not include information about aluminum metal roofs in that section. We recently had one installed and are quite pleased with the appearance. Our roof was installed by Interlock Industries, based in Vancouver. Their shingles come in many " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">colors and somewhat resemble the look of an asphalt shingle roof. However, unlike asphalt shingle and other roofing types, our roof has a lifetime, non-prorated, fully transferable factory " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty. It is fireproof, rot proof, energy efficient and can withstand winds in excess of 100mph. The ">cost per square foot is more expensive than asphalt shingle but not much more expensive than a 30 year warranted asphalt roof. Much has been written concerning the rapid deterioration of today's asphalt roofs and I would suspect your readers would be interested in learning more. And, no, we don't hear "pitter patter" when it rains!

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Tuckertown

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Tuckertown, Rhode Island. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Tuckertown.

Will a metal roof handle Rhode Island's freeze-thaw cycles better than asphalt or wood?

Yes—aluminum's material properties make it naturally resistant to freeze-thaw damage. Tuckertown experiences about 80 freeze-thaw days per year, a condition that cracks asphalt, splits wood shakes, and causes concrete tile to spall. Aluminum expands and contracts uniformly without cracking or rotting because it contains no organic matter and its oxide layer self-heals when scratched. The four-way interlocking panels (ESR-1790 tested) allow thermal movement without stressing seals, and the Alunar 70% PVDF coating prevents water ingress that would accelerate freeze damage in competing materials.

How does Interlock Metal Roofing handle heavy snow and ice buildup in Tuckertown?

Interlock panels shed snow and ice efficiently because of their smooth, sloped surface geometry and extremely light weight—the Shake profile installs at just 0.58 lb/sq ft, so accumulated snow doesn't overload your structure the way slate or concrete tile would. Tuckertown averages about 75 cm of snow annually. The interlocking design prevents water infiltration during melt cycles, and ice dams are less likely because the panels' low thermal mass and reflective coatings (solar reflectance up to 0.55 in select colors) minimize heat loss through the roof—meaning less melting at the eaves that refreezes at the gutters. Optional snow guards are available for steeper pitches.

Will an Interlock metal roof leak during Tuckertown's heavy rainfall?

Heavy rainfall won't penetrate an Interlock roof because the four-way interlocking seams create a labyrinth that forces water downslope; it cannot flow backward or sideways into the structure. Tuckertown receives about 1264 mm of rain annually, roughly half of which falls in heavy downpours. The panels interlock both horizontally and vertically, so water is physically blocked at multiple panel boundaries. Combined with a solid deck and underlayment installed to ESR-1790 specification, this system performs identically to asphalt in rain testing—but without the deterioration. The Guardian warranty covers leakage for the original owner's lifetime.

Can Interlock withstand the wind gusts common in Rhode Island?

Yes—Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed per specification. Tuckertown's typical daily winds average about 18 km/h with gusts recorded to 125 km/h, placing it in a moderate wind zone. The interlocking geometry means each panel is mechanically locked to its neighbors on all four edges; wind cannot lift or separate individual panels. Unlike traditional roofing, there are no exposed fasteners for wind to attack. The ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation confirms this design under IBC/IRC wind load tables, making Interlock suitable for coastal and elevated exposures.

Why does Interlock use aluminum instead of steel, and does it matter in Tuckertown?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. Steel roofing requires constant coating maintenance to prevent rust, especially in humid, freeze-thaw climates like Tuckertown's where salt spray from proximity to the Atlantic and road salt create corrosive conditions. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish applied to both sides. When scratched, aluminum's oxide layer self-heals—a chemical process that restores protection without repainting. Over 80 freeze-thaw days per year, this passive durability eliminates the rust vulnerability that shortens steel roofing life by decades.

Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof in Tuckertown?

No structural reinforcement is needed in nearly all cases. Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile—which visually replicates heavy traditional tile—installs at about 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. This allows installation over most existing roofs without engineering upgrades, saving thousands in structural work. For comparison, Slate and Cedar Shingle profiles are similarly lightweight. Your contractor can inspect your current framing, but the low weight of aluminum means most Rhode Island homes can upgrade to Interlock's durability and lifespan without costly reinforcement that tile or slate would demand.

Is an Interlock metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt in the long run?

Yes—Interlock is the last roof you'll buy. The Guardian warranty offers a lifetime limited, non-prorated material guarantee to the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, and impact loss. Asphalt typically needs replacement every 15–20 years; over 50 years, you'd buy asphalt three times over while maintaining one Interlock roof. The Alunar coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214/D2244). When you sell, the warranty transfers 50 years from installation, adding resale appeal. In Tuckertown's aggressive 80 freeze-thaw cycles per year, asphalt deteriorates faster; Interlock's material properties mean your lifetime savings justify the initial investment.

Is aluminum roofing actually more sustainable than asphalt shingles?

Yes—Interlock aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable, ending the asphalt tear-off-to-landfill cycle. When an asphalt roof reaches end-of-life, the entire tear-off becomes landfill waste. Interlock panels, manufactured in Delta, BC since 1998, retain their material value; aluminum scrap markets ensure recycling at end-of-life, not disposal. The roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) is infinitely recyclable without property loss. Interlock is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance, meaning no chemical treatments, sealers, or frequent replacements that generate waste. Over Tuckertown's 75 cm annual snowfall and 1264 mm rainfall—which accelerates asphalt degradation—choosing Interlock eliminates decades of replacement waste.

Will Interlock's hail rating help reduce my insurance costs in Rhode Island?

Possibly. Interlock Metal Roofing achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 impact resistance may qualify you for an insurance discount depending on your provider's underwriting guidelines; contact your agent with Interlock's UL listing (Intertek 33876) and ICC-ES evaluation (ESR-1790). Tuckertown experiences occasional severe weather; Class 4 rating demonstrates the roof will not lose impact resistance over time or from freeze-thaw cycling. Many insurers recognize impact-rated metal roofs as lower-risk investments, potentially lowering your premium and protecting your deductible over the roof's lifetime.
