Better communication overall, especially by email (so many phone calls these days are crooks and scammers that I tend to ignore the phone). And it would be good to have one person on the job at all times who can communicate clearly in English. That last day nobody could remember where they had left the bird feeder that had been hanging in front, and I wasn't sure I was getting though to them what was missing. We just got lucky that as I was watching them scroll through the photos on their digital camera to look for it, I noticed where it was hanging with my mermaid windsock on the big oak in the front yard.

Addressed to: Popular Mechanics I have read your recent issue which included a section about roofing materials. I was surprised your excellent publication did not include information about aluminum metal roofs in that section. We recently had one installed and are quite pleased with the appearance. Our roof was installed by Interlock Industries, based in Vancouver. Their shingles come in many " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">colors and somewhat resemble the look of an asphalt shingle roof. However, unlike asphalt shingle and other roofing types, our roof has a lifetime, non-prorated, fully transferable factory " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty. It is fireproof, rot proof, energy efficient and can withstand winds in excess of 100mph. The ">cost per square foot is more expensive than asphalt shingle but not much more expensive than a 30 year warranted asphalt roof. Much has been written concerning the rapid deterioration of today's asphalt roofs and I would suspect your readers would be interested in learning more. And, no, we don't hear "pitter patter" when it rains!

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Peace Dale

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Peace Dale, Rhode Island. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Peace Dale.

Will a metal roof handle Rhode Island's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes—aluminum's oxide layer actually strengthens under repeated freeze-thaw stress, unlike asphalt or wood that crack and curl. Peace Dale experiences about 80 freeze-thaw days per year across roughly 75 cm of annual snowfall, creating exactly the cycling that breaks down traditional roofing. Aluminum expands and contracts uniformly without moisture absorption, so it resists the damage that destroys shingles. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating (warranted 30 years) adds another defense layer, keeping ice and salt from ever touching bare metal.

How does metal roofing handle heavy snow and ice dams?

The smooth, slippery surface of metal panels sheds snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt, reducing ice-dam formation that traps water and causes leaks. Peace Dale averages about 75 cm of snow yearly with wind gusts reaching 125 km/h—conditions where weight matters. Interlock panels weigh just 0.41 to 0.59 lb/sq ft (the Tile profile is roughly 96% lighter than clay or concrete), so snow loads don't compress or stress your structure. Optional snow guards can be installed if you prefer controlled shedding, but the geometry naturally encourages runoff in thaw cycles.

Does metal roofing leak in Peace Dale's heavy rainfall?

No. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels overlap in all directions, creating multiple barriers against water infiltration even during Peace Dale's annual 1264 mm of rain. ICC-ES ESR-1790 approval confirms the system meets IBC/IRC water-tightness standards. When installed over solid decking with underlayment, the water path is diverted off the roof surface long before it reaches the structure. The real advantage: unlike asphalt that degrades and develops pinhole leaks, aluminum's oxide coating is self-healing—if scratched, it immediately re-oxidizes and continues protecting the metal underneath.

Can metal roofing withstand Peace Dale's wind and coastal gusts?

Yes. Interlock's four-way interlocking design is warranted to resist winds up to 120 mph (193 km/h), well above Peace Dale's documented 125 km/h gusts. The panels lock together at all edges, so no individual panel can lift or separate in a gust event. Your home's exposure matters—higher elevation or open terrain increases localized wind speed—but the ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation confirms the installation method meets code for standard residential exposure in New England. Over 25 years in the field, from coastal British Columbia to hurricane-zone installations, Interlock panels have proven this design in real conditions that match or exceed what you'll experience.

What hail rating does metal roofing get, and can it lower insurance?

Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4—the highest impact rating available—and the Guardian Warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This non-combustible aluminum roof often qualifies for homeowner insurance discounts due to its impact resistance and fire rating. Contact your agent with the UL 2218 Class 4 certification to see what savings apply. Peace Dale's climate brings heavy rainfall and occasional severe weather; a roof that shrugs off maximum-impact hail and won't degrade from 1264 mm of annual rain is attractive to underwriters who know your roof won't become a claim source.

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt?

Metal roofing costs more upfront but is the last roof you'll install. Asphalt typically lasts 15-20 years and requires tear-off, landfill disposal, and reinstallation—three expensive cycles in a 50-year timeframe. Interlock's Guardian Warranty is non-prorated for the original owner and transfers once with 50 years of coverage from completion, eliminating re-roofing within your ownership and the next owner's tenure. Current financing offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation. Over 60 years, one durable roof beats three asphalt replacements, plus you recoup value at sale—Peace Dale's coastal location and 3075 annual sunshine hours make energy-efficient metal particularly visible to buyers.

What does Interlock's lifetime warranty actually cover?

The Guardian Warranty is a non-prorated, lifetime limited material warranty for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It transfers once to the next owner for 50 years from completion—a massive advantage when selling. Aluminum never rots or rusts (it contains zero iron), and the Alunar 70% PVDF coating is warranted 30 years against fading and chalking. Combined with ICC-ES ESR-1790 approval and UL 2218 Class 4 hail rating, you own a roof system backed for functional life, not just a few years. No other roofing material offers this combination of non-prorated coverage and transferability in Peace Dale's tough climate.

Do I need to reinforce my home's frame for metal roof weight?

No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's aluminum panels weigh just 0.41 to 0.59 lb/sq ft—the Mediterranean Tile profile is roughly 96% lighter than clay or concrete tile. This lets the roof install directly over most existing asphalt without decking upgrades. Slate, wood shake, and tile roofs demand heavy framing; metal installs on standard residential structures. This also means no additional load during Peace Dale's 75 cm annual snow events or the freeze-thaw cycles that stress heavier systems. The four-way interlocking design distributes any load evenly, and the ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation confirms installation requirements—there are no hidden structural demands.

Is metal roofing environmentally better than asphalt shingles?

Significantly. Aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable at end of life, closing a material loop rather than sending roofing waste to landfills. Asphalt tear-offs (Peace Dale gets about 1264 mm annual rain, accelerating shingle degradation) generate thousands of pounds of non-recyclable debris per home. Interlock panels, manufactured in Delta, BC since 1998, are designed for 50+ year service life, reducing the frequency of replacement cycles. When an Interlock roof eventually reaches end-of-life, the aluminum core retains scrap value and enters recycling streams. The CALGreen-verified low-maintenance design (no yearly cleaning or coating reapplication) further reduces the environmental footprint over the roof's tenure in your home.

Who installs and services Interlock roofing in Peace Dale?

Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. has served this region since 1999 and is your authorized installer for all five profile options: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile, and Standing Seam. They handle design consultation, material procurement, installation to ICC-ESR-1790 code, and warranty registration. The company's 25+ years in New England means they understand Peace Dale's freeze-thaw cycles, coastal salt air, and 125 km/h wind gusts firsthand. Current promotions include no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation. Local expertise ensures your roof is installed to specification and your Guardian Warranty is properly documented.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Peace Dale’s climate?

Yes. Peace Dale averages about 75 cm of snow, 1264 mm of rain, roughly 80 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 125 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
