Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Slocum, Rhode Island
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
I had a leak in my bathroom. The man that came was very nice and professional. Very informative thanks
Addressed to: Popular Mechanics I have read your recent issue which included a section about roofing materials. I was surprised your excellent publication did not include information about aluminum metal roofs in that section. We recently had one installed and are quite pleased with the appearance. Our roof was installed by Interlock Industries, based in Vancouver. Their shingles come in many " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">colors and somewhat resemble the look of an asphalt shingle roof. However, unlike asphalt shingle and other roofing types, our roof has a lifetime, non-prorated, fully transferable factory " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty. It is fireproof, rot proof, energy efficient and can withstand winds in excess of 100mph. The ">cost per square foot is more expensive than asphalt shingle but not much more expensive than a 30 year warranted asphalt roof. Much has been written concerning the rapid deterioration of today's asphalt roofs and I would suspect your readers would be interested in learning more. And, no, we don't hear "pitter patter" when it rains!

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Slocum
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Slocum, Rhode Island. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Slocum.
How does a metal roof handle Slocum's 75 cm of annual snow?
Aluminum panels are so light—the Slate profile weighs just 0.41 lb/sq ft—that snow load poses no structural risk, and the smooth interlocked surface sheds snow naturally without the ice-dam buildup common under asphalt. Slocum averages about 80 freeze-thaw cycles per year; aluminum's oxide coating stays intact through those cycles, while the four-way interlocking prevents water infiltration at seams. Optional snow guards can be installed if you want to control debris slide, but the roof itself handles the seasonal stress without degradation.
Why does freeze-thaw cycling in Rhode Island affect some roofs but not Interlock?
Freeze-thaw damage occurs when water enters materials and expands as it freezes; Slocum's ~80 annual freeze-thaw days create ideal conditions for this failure in asphalt, wood shake, and concrete tile. Aluminum cannot rust or rot, and its self-healing oxide layer prevents corrosion even when the metal is scratched. The four-way interlocking seals prevent standing water from entering joints, so ice formation has nowhere to propagate cracks or lift panels—a critical advantage over materials that absorb moisture and deteriorate from repeated expansion and contraction.
Does aluminum roofing rust in a humid Rhode Island climate?
Aluminum contains no iron, so it cannot rust—period. Steel roofing corrodes in salt air and humid climates; Slocum's 1264 mm annual rainfall and coastal proximity create an acidic, moist environment where steel fails. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum (ASTM B209) with a Alunar® 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish applied to both sides, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. The self-healing oxide layer reforms when scratched, so micro-damage from wind gusts or debris never initiates rust—making aluminum the only non-corroding metal roofing option for humid northeastern climates.
Can a metal roof withstand the wind gusts Slocum gets in winter storms?
Slocum's typical wind gusts reach about 125 km/h, and Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist sustained wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The interlocking geometry distributes lateral force across the entire roof, eliminating the weak seams and lifted edges that plague asphalt shingles. UL testing validates this performance, and the Guardian warranty explicitly covers wind damage—so severe nor'easters or nor'westers won't compromise the seal or cause premature failure the way they do with traditional roofing.
With 1264 mm of rain annually, how does Interlock prevent leaks?
The four-way interlocking system creates a labyrinth of overlaps that channels water downslope; rain cannot penetrate seams, and the aluminum panels themselves don't absorb moisture like wood or asphalt. Installed over solid deck with underlayment (and compatible with most existing roofs), the assembly sheds the ~3.5 mm of daily average rainfall without pooling or backing up into joints. ESR-1790 compliance confirms the roof meets IRC waterproofing standards, and the warranty covers leakage from material defect—so installation over your existing structure is both safe and protected.
Will hail damage a metal roof, and can I get insurance breaks?
Interlock carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This rating often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts because the roof is substantially less likely to fail during severe weather than asphalt or wood. Many insurers reduce premiums when you install Class 4-rated roofing, partially offsetting the initial cost. Given northeastern spring storms, this resilience and potential savings make aluminum a smarter long-term investment than materials that dent, crack, or require replacement after a single hail event.
Do I need to reinforce my house structure before installing a metal tile roof?
No. The Interlock Mediterranean Tile profile weighs about 0.59 lb/sq ft—roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—so it installs directly over your existing roof without any structural reinforcement. Traditional clay or concrete tile weighs 10–15 lb/sq ft and often requires additional framing; Slocum's older homes in particular benefit from this lightweight advantage. Because installation happens over the existing deck, you also avoid the labor and waste cost of a full tear-off, reducing both project timeline and environmental impact.
How much annual maintenance does an Interlock metal roof need in New England?
Virtually none. Unlike asphalt shingles (which curl and require replacement every 15–20 years), wood shake (which splits and rots), or clay tile (which cracks in freeze-thaw), aluminum panels don't degrade from weather exposure. The Alunar® coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading; you won't clean it obsessively, and no sealant reapplication or shingle repair is needed. CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance burden. A simple annual gutter cleaning (standard for any roof) and occasional trim checks are sufficient—so you avoid the recurring costs that eat into asphalt's apparent economy.
Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt over 30+ years?
Metal roofing costs more initially, but it's genuinely the last roof you buy. Asphalt typically lasts 15–20 years and requires disposal; Interlock's Guardian warranty is lifetime limited and non-prorated for the original owner, then transfers 50 years to the next owner. Over a 50-year horizon, you install asphalt 2–3 times (including tear-off and landfill fees); metal installs once. With a current promotion offering no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation, the effective early cost drops sharply. Factor in potential insurance discounts (Class 4 hail rating), zero maintenance, and the energy savings from high-reflectance coatings (up to 0.55 solar reflectance), and the math favors aluminum substantially.
Is aluminum roofing actually more environmentally friendly than asphalt?
Yes. Interlock panels are approximately 95% recyclable at end-of-life; aluminum's value ensures recycling infrastructure exists. Asphalt shingles, by contrast, are non-recyclable and create millions of tons of landfill waste annually. Each asphalt roof replacement involves tearing off old shingles, hauling them away, and starting over; Interlock installs over the existing roof, eliminating one tear-off event and its associated waste. energy-efficient colors reflect heat instead of absorbing it—reducing summer cooling loads in Slocum's roughly 3075 hours of sunshine per year. The combination of durability, replaceability, and thermal efficiency makes aluminum the responsible choice for homeowners concerned about long-term environmental impact.
