Better communication overall, especially by email (so many phone calls these days are crooks and scammers that I tend to ignore the phone). And it would be good to have one person on the job at all times who can communicate clearly in English. That last day nobody could remember where they had left the bird feeder that had been hanging in front, and I wasn't sure I was getting though to them what was missing. We just got lucky that as I was watching them scroll through the photos on their digital camera to look for it, I noticed where it was hanging with my mermaid windsock on the big oak in the front yard.

Addressed to: Popular Mechanics I have read your recent issue which included a section about roofing materials. I was surprised your excellent publication did not include information about aluminum metal roofs in that section. We recently had one installed and are quite pleased with the appearance. Our roof was installed by Interlock Industries, based in Vancouver. Their shingles come in many " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">colors and somewhat resemble the look of an asphalt shingle roof. However, unlike asphalt shingle and other roofing types, our roof has a lifetime, non-prorated, fully transferable factory " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty. It is fireproof, rot proof, energy efficient and can withstand winds in excess of 100mph. The ">cost per square foot is more expensive than asphalt shingle but not much more expensive than a 30 year warranted asphalt roof. Much has been written concerning the rapid deterioration of today's asphalt roofs and I would suspect your readers would be interested in learning more. And, no, we don't hear "pitter patter" when it rains!

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Lakeside

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Lakeside, Rhode Island. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Lakeside.

Will a metal roof hold up through Rhode Island's freeze-thaw winters?

Yes—aluminum thrives in freeze-thaw cycles because it expands and contracts uniformly without cracking or splitting. Lakeside experiences about 80 freeze-thaw days per year, and unlike wood shakes or asphalt that degrade under this stress, aluminum's 3105-H24 alloy flexes predictably and stays intact. The four-way interlocking system also allows controlled movement between panels, so ice and snow load shifts won't compromise the seal or break the material.

Why doesn't aluminum rust like steel roofing in salty air?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes when exposed to moisture and salt. Instead, aluminum naturally forms an oxide layer that actually self-heals when scratched, a property steel simply doesn't have. In Lakeside's coastal environment, this matters enormously: the Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish is applied to both sides of every panel for extra protection in salt air, then backed by a 30-year coating warranty. You get genuine corrosion immunity, not just a thin protective coating.

How does a metal roof handle Lakeside's average 75 cm of snow per year?

Metal roofs shed snow and ice effectively because the smooth, hard surface and thermal properties prevent ice dams from forming underneath. Lakeside's roughly 75 cm annual snowfall will slide off safely—the lightweight aluminum (Shingle at 0.41 lb/sq ft) never strains your structure the way slate or concrete tile does. Snow guards can be added if you want to control where snow falls. The four-way interlocking design also stands up to the weight and movement of seasonal snow loading without panel separation or leaks.

Can a metal roof handle Lakeside's coastal wind gusts?

Yes—Interlock roofing is warranted to resist winds up to 120 mph when installed to specification, which exceeds the roughly 125 km/h gusts recorded in this area. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels lock together mechanically, so wind pressure can't lift or separate them. Coastal homes from Maine to British Columbia have used this system for decades. The four-point locking design distributes wind load across the entire roof assembly, not just fasteners.

Will hail damage hurt my metal roof or void coverage?

Hail actually presents an opportunity: Interlock roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many homeowners see insurance premium reductions after installing a Class 4 metal roof. Unlike asphalt shingles that crack under hail, aluminum's strength and flex properties shed impact energy. Ask your insurer about discounts; many carriers recognize the durability advantage and reward it in their rates.

Do I need to reinforce my house framing for a metal roof?

No reinforcement required. Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile weighs about 0.59 lb/sq ft—roughly 96% lighter than real concrete or clay tile—so it installs directly over your existing roof in most cases without any structural upgrades. This matters in New England where older homes weren't built to carry slate or tile loads. The aluminum alloy delivers tile-like aesthetics with a featherweight footprint, letting you upgrade your roof appearance without expensive framing work.

How much upkeep does a metal roof really need?

Almost none. Unlike asphalt shingles that need periodic replacement, wood shakes that split and rot, or tile that cracks under freeze-thaw stress, aluminum requires only occasional inspection and gutter cleaning—the same maintenance you'd do anyway. The Alunar coating is factory-applied to both panel sides and backed by a 30-year warranty against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214/D2244 tested). Lakeside's roughly 1264 mm of annual rainfall will naturally rinse the roof clean. After installation, your maintenance costs drop to nearly zero.

What's the actual warranty coverage on an Interlock roof?

The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It's transferable once to the next owner, who gets 50 years of coverage from completion. That means if you install today and sell in 15 years, the buyer gets 35 more years of warranty protection. Few roofing products offer this level of long-term commitment; it reflects the real durability aluminum delivers in climates like Lakeside's with heavy snow, salt air, and freeze-thaw cycles.

How does a metal roof handle Lakeside's heavy rainfall without leaking?

The four-way interlocking design means water is shed, not trapped—panels overlap and lock together so rain runs off before it can pool or penetrate seams. Lakeside receives about 1264 mm of rain yearly, so a reliable shed system is essential. Installation over a solid deck with underlayment ensures any water that does reach the substrate drains away. The mechanical locking (not sealant-dependent) means the roof doesn't fail if caulk dries out or degrades. Properly installed metal roofs often outlast the gutters and downspouts that feed them.

Who installs Interlock metal roofs in Lakeside, Rhode Island?

Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. has served this region since 1999 and specializes in Interlock systems for New England's coastal salt air, heavy snow, and freeze-thaw conditions. They understand local building codes, permit requirements, and the specific challenges of Washington County roofing. Right now they're offering no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation. A local, experienced installer ensures proper four-point locking, correct fastening, and warranty activation—details that protect your investment for decades.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Lakeside’s climate?

Yes. Lakeside averages about 75 cm of snow, 1264 mm of rain, roughly 80 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 125 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
