Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Scarborough, Rhode Island
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
Addressed to: Popular Mechanics I have read your recent issue which included a section about roofing materials. I was surprised your excellent publication did not include information about aluminum metal roofs in that section. We recently had one installed and are quite pleased with the appearance. Our roof was installed by Interlock Industries, based in Vancouver. Their shingles come in many " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">colors and somewhat resemble the look of an asphalt shingle roof. However, unlike asphalt shingle and other roofing types, our roof has a lifetime, non-prorated, fully transferable factory " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty. It is fireproof, rot proof, energy efficient and can withstand winds in excess of 100mph. The ">cost per square foot is more expensive than asphalt shingle but not much more expensive than a 30 year warranted asphalt roof. Much has been written concerning the rapid deterioration of today's asphalt roofs and I would suspect your readers would be interested in learning more. And, no, we don't hear "pitter patter" when it rains!
I had a leak in my bathroom. The man that came was very nice and professional. Very informative thanks

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Scarborough
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Scarborough, Rhode Island. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Scarborough.
Will a metal roof handle freeze-thaw cycles in Scarborough winters?
Yes—aluminum's crystalline structure actually thrives through freeze-thaw stress. Scarborough experiences roughly 80 freeze-thaw days per year, and aluminum expands and contracts uniformly without cracking, splitting, or curling the way asphalt and wood do. The four-way interlocking panels absorb movement while maintaining their seal. The 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) was chosen precisely for this cycling durability, and the Alunar coating stays flexible across temperature swings that would embrittle other materials.
Why doesn't aluminum rust like steel roofing, especially near coastal salt air?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains zero iron—rust requires iron oxidation. Instead, aluminum forms a microscopic oxide layer that self-heals when scratched, providing permanent corrosion immunity. Interlock panels receive Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish on both sides, which is critical in salt-air regions. This dual-side coating was verified by ICC-ES (ESR-1790) and is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading per ASTM D4214. Even with Scarborough's 1264 mm annual rainfall, the metal never weakens from rust.
How do metal roofs perform with snow and ice buildup in Rhode Island?
Metal roofs shed snow and ice more efficiently than asphalt because aluminum's smooth surface creates less friction and higher thermal conductivity. Scarborough averages about 75 cm of snow annually, and ice dams form when heat loss is high; metal's reflectivity (up to 0.55 initial solar reflectance in Aged Copper Penny, energy-efficient) helps maintain consistent roof temperature, reducing dam formation. The four-way interlocking panels lock out water penetration even when ice is present. Optional snow guards can be installed if you want to retain snow for insulation or aesthetic reasons.
Are metal roofs secure in Scarborough's coastal wind gusts?
Absolutely. Interlock panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Scarborough experiences typical daily-max winds around 18 km/h with gusts reaching 125 km/h—well within the roof's rated envelope. The four-way interlocking system locks each panel to its neighbors and to the deck, distributing wind load across the entire assembly rather than stressing individual fasteners. This mechanical redundancy is why the UL 2218 Class 4 hail rating and wind warranty have held through decades of coastal installations.
Do I need to reinforce my home's structure for a metal roof?
No structural reinforcement is needed. The Interlock Tile profile weighs roughly 0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—while the Shingle installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft. Most homes can accept this load over existing rafters without upgrades. Because Scarborough homes already support asphalt (which is heavier per installed square foot due to multiple layers and fastening), aluminum is actually a structural relief. The lightweight design also means Interlock can install directly over your existing roof, cutting labor time and disposal costs.
How does a metal roof handle Scarborough's heavy rainfall?
The four-way interlocking panel system is engineered to shed water, not trap it. Scarborough receives approximately 1264 mm of annual rainfall, and the interlocking seams overlap in both directions, channeling water downslope without pooling. Water cannot migrate sideways into the panel edges because the mechanical lock (verified in ICC-ES ESR-1790) creates a continuous weather barrier. Installed over a solid deck with underlayment, the assembly performs identically to asphalt—silent and leak-free—because the deck and underlayment do the actual water protection, not the visible material.
Will a metal roof reduce my heating and cooling costs?
Interlock's energy-efficient colors reflect sunlight rather than absorb it, reducing cooling load year-round. The Aged Copper Penny profile achieves up to 0.55 initial solar reflectance and 0.84 thermal emissivity, measured by the Cool Roof Rating Council. Scarborough's 3075 annual sunshine hours mean significant cooling savings in summer; in winter, the metal's high thermal conductivity equalizes roof temperature, reducing heat loss through the peak. Over a 50-year lifespan, the energy savings substantially offset the material cost compared to dark asphalt, which absorbs and radiates heat.
Can I get an insurance discount for a UL Class 4 metal roof?
Many insurers offer discounts for Class 4 impact-rated roofs because they survive hail that destroys asphalt. Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4—the highest available rating—and the Guardian Warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. While Scarborough doesn't experience frequent hail, the rating demonstrates material resilience that underwriters recognize. Discuss the UL 2218 Class 4 rating with your insurer; some offer 10–20% premium reductions. The current regional promotion—no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation—can be combined with insurance savings for additional benefit.
What warranty backs a metal roof, and does it transfer if I sell?
The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It transfers once to the next owner for 50 years from completion, adding significant resale appeal. Over a typical 50-year ownership or multi-generational hold, you'll buy asphalt three times (each lasting 15–20 years) but own only one metal roof. The 30-year coating warranty (ASTM D4214/D2244) separately protects against chalking and fading. This structure makes aluminum the last roof you'll install.
