Better communication overall, especially by email (so many phone calls these days are crooks and scammers that I tend to ignore the phone). And it would be good to have one person on the job at all times who can communicate clearly in English. That last day nobody could remember where they had left the bird feeder that had been hanging in front, and I wasn't sure I was getting though to them what was missing. We just got lucky that as I was watching them scroll through the photos on their digital camera to look for it, I noticed where it was hanging with my mermaid windsock on the big oak in the front yard.

Addressed to: Popular Mechanics I have read your recent issue which included a section about roofing materials. I was surprised your excellent publication did not include information about aluminum metal roofs in that section. We recently had one installed and are quite pleased with the appearance. Our roof was installed by Interlock Industries, based in Vancouver. Their shingles come in many " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">colors and somewhat resemble the look of an asphalt shingle roof. However, unlike asphalt shingle and other roofing types, our roof has a lifetime, non-prorated, fully transferable factory " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty. It is fireproof, rot proof, energy efficient and can withstand winds in excess of 100mph. The ">cost per square foot is more expensive than asphalt shingle but not much more expensive than a 30 year warranted asphalt roof. Much has been written concerning the rapid deterioration of today's asphalt roofs and I would suspect your readers would be interested in learning more. And, no, we don't hear "pitter patter" when it rains!

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in South Kingstown

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in South Kingstown, Rhode Island. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in South Kingstown.

Will a metal roof handle Rhode Island's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes—aluminum expands and contracts predictably without degrading, even through South Kingstown's roughly 80 freeze-thaw days per year. Unlike asphalt shingles, which become brittle and crack under repeated freezing, or wood shakes, which split, aluminum's 3105-H24 alloy has no moisture absorption and no material breakdown mechanism from temperature swings. The four-way interlocking panels accommodate movement while staying watertight, so your roof stays intact across decades of seasonal stress that would compromise other materials.

How does an Interlock metal roof perform under South Kingstown's snow load?

Metal roofs shed snow effectively because their smooth, sloped surface and low friction coefficient prevent snow from bonding to the panel face the way it does to asphalt. South Kingstown receives about 75 cm of snow annually; the lightweight Interlock profile (Shake at 0.58 lb/sq ft, for example) carries that load without stress and won't sag or compress under snow weight. If you want to retain some snow for insulation or prevent sliding onto walkways, optional snow guards install easily on the interlocking panels. Either way, your roof's structural integrity remains uncompromised by winter accumulation.

Can heavy rainfall cause leaks in a metal roof installation?

No—the four-way interlocking aluminum panels are engineered to overlap on all sides, so water cannot run sideways into seams. South Kingstown averages about 1264 mm of rainfall yearly; that volume flows downslope and out of the overlaps without pooling. When installed over solid deck and underlayment (the standard method), the system is identical in leak resistance to asphalt—meaning proven, code-compliant watertightness. The ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation confirms installation methods that meet IBC/IRC standards for your region, so heavy rain simply sheds like it does on any properly pitched roof.

Why doesn't aluminum rust like a steel metal roof?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron; instead, it forms a self-healing oxide layer that protects the metal underneath. If scratched during installation or a storm, that oxide regenerates automatically within days—unlike steel roofs, which require paint touch-ups to prevent rust spread. Interlock's Alunar 70% PVDF coating (warranted 30 years against fading) adds a second barrier. Even in coastal or high-humidity areas, aluminum outlasts steel by decades. For South Kingstown's damp climate with 80 freeze-thaw cycles yearly, choosing a metal that doesn't corrode means you avoid rust stains, structural weakening, and roof failure.

Is a metal roof safe in South Kingstown's coastal wind gusts?

Yes—the four-way interlocking design locks adjacent panels together so they resist wind as a unified system, not as individual shingles. Interlock panels are warranted to withstand wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed per specification. South Kingstown's typical wind gusts reach about 125 km/h (78 mph), with occasional stronger storms; your roof will perform well within its rated limits. The interlocking geometry also means no fasteners are exposed to wind uplift, eliminating the primary failure point of traditional asphalt or sheet-metal roofs. Your home stays protected year-round.

Does Interlock metal roofing qualify for hail damage coverage or discounts?

Many insurers offer premium reductions for Class 4 hail-rated roofing. Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4, the highest impact classification available, meaning it resists hailstones up to 1.5 inches—and the Guardian warranty covers hail perforation at that size. Some Rhode Island insurers recognize this durability and lower your rate; contact your agent with the UL 2218 rating to inquire. Over the roof's 50-year transferable warranty term, hail protection combined with wind, snow, and freeze-thaw resistance can translate into meaningful insurance savings, especially if your area experiences spring or early-summer storms.

Will an energy-efficiency metal roof actually lower my cooling costs in Rhode Island?

Yes, if you choose an energy-efficient color. Interlock offers colors rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council with solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny) and thermal emissivity of 0.84, meaning they bounce sunlight away rather than absorb it like dark asphalt. South Kingstown averages about 3075 sunshine hours per year; on clear summer days, reflective coatings reduce attic temperature rise and lower cooling demand. The effect is most noticeable in air-conditioned homes with steep roofs facing south or west. energy-efficiency certification verifies the thermal performance independently, so you're not relying on marketing claims—you get measurable energy efficiency.

What warranty comes with Interlock metal roofing, and how long does it actually last?

Interlock carries the Guardian Warranty: a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. The warranty is also transferable once—the second owner receives protection through 50 years from completion. Non-prorated means there's no percentage reduction over time; you're equally protected in year one and year 49. This structure reflects confidence in the aluminum alloy (ASTM B209 3105-H24) and Alunar coating (30-year fade/chalk warranty). Combined with the roof's typical 50+ year lifespan, you're buying the last roof you'll install.

Can I install a metal roof over my existing asphalt shingles without reinforcing the structure?

Yes—Interlock's lightweight construction makes this possible. The Mediterranean Tile profile, for instance, weighs only 0.59 lb/sq ft, roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile, so no structural reinforcement is required. You can install directly over existing asphalt shingles (after inspection for integrity), avoiding the labor and landfill cost of a tear-off. South Kingstown's 75 cm annual snowfall is easily supported by your existing framing when the roofing itself weighs a fraction of traditional materials. This saves thousands in labor and structural work while eliminating the environmental footprint of demolition waste—a significant advantage if your home was built before modern load-rating standards.

Who installs Interlock metal roofing in South Kingstown, and how long have they been in business?

Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. serves South Kingstown and the surrounding region; the installer has been operating since 1999, giving it 25+ years of experience in New England's challenging climate. Local installation matters because your contractor understands Rhode Island's 1264 mm rainfall, 80 freeze-thaw cycles, and coastal moisture—conditions that demand precise flashing, deck preparation, and ventilation design. Currently, financing is available: no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation. Speaking with a regional installer who has navigated your specific weather patterns and building codes ensures your roof is installed to spec and backed by continuity of service.

Is a metal roof a good choice for South Kingstown’s climate?

Yes. South Kingstown averages about 75 cm of snow, 1264 mm of rain, roughly 80 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 125 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
