Better communication overall, especially by email (so many phone calls these days are crooks and scammers that I tend to ignore the phone). And it would be good to have one person on the job at all times who can communicate clearly in English. That last day nobody could remember where they had left the bird feeder that had been hanging in front, and I wasn't sure I was getting though to them what was missing. We just got lucky that as I was watching them scroll through the photos on their digital camera to look for it, I noticed where it was hanging with my mermaid windsock on the big oak in the front yard.

Addressed to: Popular Mechanics I have read your recent issue which included a section about roofing materials. I was surprised your excellent publication did not include information about aluminum metal roofs in that section. We recently had one installed and are quite pleased with the appearance. Our roof was installed by Interlock Industries, based in Vancouver. Their shingles come in many " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">colors and somewhat resemble the look of an asphalt shingle roof. However, unlike asphalt shingle and other roofing types, our roof has a lifetime, non-prorated, fully transferable factory " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty. It is fireproof, rot proof, energy efficient and can withstand winds in excess of 100mph. The ">cost per square foot is more expensive than asphalt shingle but not much more expensive than a 30 year warranted asphalt roof. Much has been written concerning the rapid deterioration of today's asphalt roofs and I would suspect your readers would be interested in learning more. And, no, we don't hear "pitter patter" when it rains!

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Bonnet Shores

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Bonnet Shores, Rhode Island. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Bonnet Shores.

Will a metal roof hold up to Rhode Island's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes. Bonnet Shores experiences roughly 80 freeze-thaw days per year, and aluminum metal roofing actually thrives in this climate. Unlike asphalt that becomes brittle and cracks, or wood that splits, aluminum expands and contracts uniformly without permanent damage. The 3105-H24 aluminum alloy is engineered to cycle repeatedly without fatigue. The Alunar coating—warranted 30 years against chalking and fading—protects against salt spray and moisture infiltration that accelerates freeze damage in other materials. Your roof survives the thaw season, not just tolerates it.

How does an Interlock metal roof handle Bonnet Shores' annual snowfall?

Metal roofing sheds snow far more effectively than asphalt. Your region receives about 75 cm of snow per year, and Interlock's four-way interlocking profiles—especially the Slate and Cedar Shingle—prevent ice dams by allowing meltwater to drain quickly. The profiles' texture mimics traditional shingles without creating pockets where ice builds up. Snow guards are available if you prefer controlled shedding away from walkways. The exceptionally light weight (Shingle at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means no structural stress, even under heavy seasonal accumulation.

Why does aluminum metal roofing not rust in coastal Rhode Island?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. Instead, it forms a microscopically thin oxide layer that self-heals when scratched—a natural defense mechanism. This is why Interlock ships roofs to Antarctic research stations and coastal salt-air homes without degradation. The roofing-grade 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 alloy meets ASTM B209 standards, and the Alunar 70% PVDF coating (applied to both sides) adds 30-year protection in salt-spray environments like Bonnet Shores. Steel roofs corrode; aluminum simply doesn't.

Can a metal roof handle the 1264 mm of annual rain in Bonnet Shores without leaking?

Yes—the four-way interlocking design is specifically engineered for high rainfall. Bonnet Shores receives about 1264 mm of rain yearly, and the overlapping panels create multiple barriers that redirect water downward and outward. Installation over a solid deck with underlayment ensures no water penetration at seams. The ICC-ES evaluation (ESR-1790, reissued 2025) certifies leak resistance under the IBC/IRC codes that govern Rhode Island construction. Properly installed Interlock roofs have no leak history in wet climates.

Will an Interlock metal roof survive Bonnet Shores' coastal wind gusts?

Absolutely. Bonnet Shores experiences typical daily-max winds of about 18 km/h with gusts up to 125 km/h, and Interlock panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The four-way interlocking mechanical connection—not just nailing—distributes lateral forces across the entire roof plane. Each panel hooks into its neighbors, creating a unified system that won't separate or lift. Coastal salt air doesn't weaken the aluminum or the warranty.

Can my house support a metal roof, or do I need structural reinforcement?

Your existing structure is already strong enough. The Interlock Mediterranean Tile profile weighs only 0.59 lb/sq ft—approximately 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—so no reinforcement is needed. Even the heavier Shake profile is just 0.58 lb/sq ft. This means installation goes directly over most existing roofs (asphalt, wood, or slate), reducing labor costs and construction time. Your home's foundation and framing feel no additional burden. Lightweight aluminum roofing is one of the few upgrades that doesn't demand structural retrofit.

Does Interlock metal roofing protect against hail in Rhode Island storms?

Yes, and your insurance company may reward you. Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. In a region that occasionally sees severe weather, this resilience matters. The aluminum alloy and rigid panel geometry distribute impact forces without denting or cracking like asphalt, wood, or ceramic tile do. Many insurers offer premium discounts for Class 4-rated roofs. Request a quote from your agent with the UL 2218 certification in hand.

Does a metal roof reduce cooling costs in the summer sun?

Interlock's energy-efficient colors reduce cooling costs by reflecting heat that asphalt absorbs. Colors like Aged Copper Penny achieve initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84, rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council. Bonnet Shores enjoys about 3075 sunshine hours per year, so reflective roofing meaningfully lowers air-conditioning load during warm months. The aluminum conducts and releases heat far faster than dark asphalt, which radiates absorbed warmth into living spaces below. You keep your home cooler without running the AC harder, and your electric bill reflects the savings.

What warranty comes with an Interlock metal roof, and how long will it last?

The Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited and non-prorated for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, and loss of impact resistance. The Alunar coating carries a separate 30-year warranty against chalking and fading. Beyond material defects, aluminum roofing routinely survives 50+ years with proper installation and maintenance. The warranty is one-time transferable, giving the next owner a 50-year term from completion. You're buying the last roof you'll install, and the next owner gets decades of protection too. Few building materials offer this longevity at this cost.

How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or tile?

Metal roofing requires far less maintenance than traditional materials. Asphalt shingles need annual inspection for curling and loss of granules; wood shakes invite rot and insect damage; ceramic tile cracks from freeze-thaw cycling common in Rhode Island's 80 annual freeze-thaw days. Interlock aluminum needs only occasional gutter cleaning and visual inspection—no sealants to reapply, no tiles to replace, no wood to treat. The CALGreen-verified system is rated for reduced maintenance. You might inspect twice yearly after winter storms, but repairs are rare. The Alunar coating prevents oxidation staining and protects against salt spray, so coastal homeowners don't chase corrosion problems.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Bonnet Shores’s climate?

Yes. Bonnet Shores averages about 75 cm of snow, 1264 mm of rain, roughly 80 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 125 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
