Addressed to: Popular Mechanics I have read your recent issue which included a section about roofing materials. I was surprised your excellent publication did not include information about aluminum metal roofs in that section. We recently had one installed and are quite pleased with the appearance. Our roof was installed by Interlock Industries, based in Vancouver. Their shingles come in many " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">colors and somewhat resemble the look of an asphalt shingle roof. However, unlike asphalt shingle and other roofing types, our roof has a lifetime, non-prorated, fully transferable factory " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty. It is fireproof, rot proof, energy efficient and can withstand winds in excess of 100mph. The ">cost per square foot is more expensive than asphalt shingle but not much more expensive than a 30 year warranted asphalt roof. Much has been written concerning the rapid deterioration of today's asphalt roofs and I would suspect your readers would be interested in learning more. And, no, we don't hear "pitter patter" when it rains!

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Saugatucket

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Saugatucket, Rhode Island. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Saugatucket.

Will a metal roof hold up to Saugatucket's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes, aluminum actually improves with freeze-thaw exposure because it has no iron and cannot rust. Saugatucket experiences about 80 freeze-thaw days per year, which is where aluminum's self-healing oxide layer shines—when the surface scratches during weather stress, the oxide automatically reforms, preventing corrosion that would compromise steel or exposed fasteners. The 3105-H24 aluminum alloy used in Interlock panels is ASTM B209 certified and has been installed successfully in similar cold climates for over 25 years. Your roof won't degrade from the seasonal expansion and contraction that degrades asphalt or wood.

How does a metal roof handle heavy snow, and do I need snow guards in Saugatucket?

Metal roofs shed snow more readily than asphalt because the smooth, interlocking panels prevent ice dams—the panels allow meltwater to drain rather than refreeze at the eaves. Saugatucket receives about 75 centimeters of snow annually plus roughly 1264 millimeters of rain, conditions that would accelerate ice-dam formation on asphalt. Interlock's four-way interlocking design and the light weight of aluminum (the Shingle profile at 0.41 lb/sq ft) mean no structural reinforcement is needed, even under heavy wet snow loads. Snow guards are optional and depend on roof pitch and local patterns; your local Interlock installer can assess whether your home's configuration requires them.

Are metal roofs safe in coastal Rhode Island wind gusts?

Interlock metal roofing is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph and has been installed successfully in coastal salt-air environments from Maine to the Antarctic. Saugatucket's typical gusts reach about 125 km/h (78 mph), well within the panel's rated capacity. The four-way interlocking system locks each panel to its neighbors, distributing wind load across the entire roof rather than stressing individual fasteners. ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 confirms this wind performance to IRC/IBC code, so your insurance carrier and local building inspector will have third-party documentation of its reliability in your area.

With 1264 mm of annual rainfall, will a metal roof leak in heavy rain?

The interlocking design channels water downslope through the panel valleys, and when installed over solid decking with underlayment—standard practice—the roof performs identically to asphalt in heavy rain. Saugatucket averages about 1264 millimeters of rain per year, and the four-way interlock ensures no water can migrate sideways between panels. The metal itself cannot rot or absorb moisture, so even if water reaches the deck, the aluminum won't fail as wooden substrate or asphalt can. Proper installation over existing roof structure is routine and adds no cost—your Interlock installer will verify that your current decking is sound before installation begins.

Why can't aluminum roofs rust like steel, and does that matter in coastal Rhode Island?

Aluminum contains no iron, so rust cannot form—chemically impossible. Instead, aluminum develops a transparent oxide layer that protects the underlying metal and self-heals when scratched. This is critical in Saugatucket's salt-air environment, where steel fasteners or steel-core roofing would corrode rapidly. Interlock panels are finished on both sides with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214 measured), providing an additional barrier. The Guardian lifetime limited warranty covers rusting, so if the oxide layer ever failed—which it won't under normal conditions—you'd have material protection for the original owner's lifetime.

Can my existing roof structure support a metal roof, or will I need expensive reinforcement?

Almost certainly not—the Mediterranean Tile profile installs at about 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile, and light enough that no structural reinforcement is required for most homes. Your current asphalt shingles probably weigh 2–3 times more per square foot, so switching to metal actually reduces load. Interlock installs directly over existing roof systems in most cases, eliminating tear-off labor and debris disposal. Your local Interlock installer will inspect your framing during the quote process, but weight has never been a structural barrier—the ICC-ES evaluation confirms that standard residential framing handles the aluminum panels without modification.

Will a UL 2218 Class 4 hail rating lower my homeowners insurance in Saugatucket?

Possibly. Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, the highest available, and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches—protection asphalt cannot match. Some insurers offer discounts for Class 4 impact-rated roofs because claims are statistically rare. Saugatucket's climate includes wind gusts to 125 km/h and weather patterns typical of the Northeast, where hail occurs but isn't frequent. Contact your insurance agent before installation with the UL 2218 Class 4 specification; present the Guardian warranty coverage details, and ask if a premium reduction applies. Even without a discount, the durability means fewer claims over the roof's lifetime.

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to replacing asphalt every 15-20 years?

Over a 50-year period, a single metal roof installation typically costs less than three asphalt replacements, and that's before labor, disposal fees, and roof-off downtime. You also avoid the cycle of tear-off debris going to landfill—aluminum is about 95% recyclable. The Guardian warranty is lifetime limited and non-prorated for the original owner, transferable to the next owner for 50 years from completion, protecting your investment and adding resale appeal. Current regional promotion: no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation. Over Saugatucket's roughly 80 freeze-thaw days per year and 1264 mm rainfall, asphalt ages faster than in milder climates; a metal roof simply outlasts the cycle.

Can a metal roof actually reduce cooling costs, or is that marketing?

Interlock's energy-efficient colors have thermal emissivity of 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny profile), meaning they reflect heat that asphalt absorbs and re-radiates into your home. Saugatucket receives about 3075 sunshine hours per year—enough for reflective coatings to make a measurable difference in cooling load, especially on south and west-facing slopes. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating confirms the performance data. You won't save 50% on air conditioning, but homeowners in similar New England climates report 5–15% cooling savings depending on home orientation and existing insulation. The coating is warranted 30 years, so reflectance persists longer than asphalt's diminishing reflectivity.

What's the installation timeline, and can you install a metal roof over my existing shingles?

Yes, Interlock installs over existing asphalt shingles in most cases, eliminating tear-off labor and accelerating the project. Installation typically takes 2–5 days depending on roof size and complexity, with minimal disruption compared to asphalt replacement. Your local installer, Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc., has served the region since 1999 and will inspect your deck, verify sound substrate, and install new underlayment and metal panels. The process is quiet and clean—no debris removal fees or landfill haul-away. The four-way interlocking panels lock together in sequence, so the crew works systematically across the roof. Most homes are weathertight by end of day two, with final trim and flashing completed shortly after.
