Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Lopez, Washington
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
Prompt service and very knowledgeable. Highly recommend.
My wife and I wanted a long-term roof and I think we found it. The product seems very good and are installer Daniel was terrific and a trooper put a lot of hours and a lot of time and made it look real nice when it was completed. I would recommend the company if you're looking for a metal roof.
Ivan Excellent will make it right!!
We needed a roof repair when our neighbors tree dropped a large limb through our roof. Ivan came And accessed The damage, Ordered the sheets we needed. He came back and did the whole Repair himself. So happy to have it fixed along with his recommendations to have the roof cleaned. We appreciate his skills in repairing The roof.
The Interlock associate Ivan, came did an awesome service in correcting the part needed to be corrected, he left us with instructions of what we needed to check and to get in touch with, if needed 😀 Ms. May the associate answering the phone was helpful for us to get prompt service. They are dependable. We received roof service.
The work was efficient and well done. The service, the people and team were great. Beautiful roof.
I highly appreciate the professionalism, workmanship and the quality of materials used. I don't doubt that it will be our forever roof and will not need to worry about replacement during the life of our house. Ross, Tony, Roma were all great throughout the new roof installation process.
We noticed water spots on the ceiling. Ivan came, found a hole likely caused by a branch in the recent wind storm. He repaired the hole on the spot. Thank you Ivan!
Ivan replaced our exhaust vent on the roof that had some leaking issue. We were impressed with his professionalism, courtesy and fixing the problem to our utmost satisfaction. We certainly would recommend him and the company for any roofing issues being it a new roof or repairs.
We recently had our roof replaced with interlock aluminum shingles and we love how it made our house stand out in our neighborhood. I would have given 5 stars but there were few things that I wanted to point out. Ross arrived on time and did an excellent presentation. I specifically asked him if their installers are contractors and his answer was no, they are employees of interlock. Turns out they are contractors which is no big deal as long as they do excellent work, it’s all about honesty. Prior to installation, the installers told me that it would take about two and a half days to finish which is great, I said no rush. The installation process took two weeks, I hope everything will go well this coming rainy season. The only thing I didn’t like was at the end of the day they leave their tools in the driveway just laying around and the worst they leave their microwave plugged into the outlet with damaged power cord. But with all things said, we love our new roof and only time will tell if it was worth the price.
Excellent contact and coordination with field representatives and installers/project manager.
We recently had our roof replaced with aluminum shingles and are very satisfied so far. - Easy Sales Process – Thank you Ross for making everything clear and straightforward from the start. - Great Value – The price was very reasonable compared to other estimates. - Better Than Expected – The finished look exceeded our expectations and really improved the appearance of our home. It’s not as glossy as we feared, which we like. - Fast & Efficient – The crew worked quickly and finished everything in just 2 days for our ~1,000 sq. ft. house with two layers of old shingles. - No Issues – No noise at all, despite common concerns about metal roofs. Tip for others: Ask for the exact model and size of vents that will be installed before the project starts. Our vents were only a few months old but couldn’t be reused, and the ones the company brought were the wrong size. The crew had to buy replacements last minute, which worked but don’t perfectly match.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Lopez
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Lopez, Washington. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Lopez.
Does a metal roof handle snow and ice in San Juan County?
Yes—metal roofs shed snow better than asphalt because the smooth, hard surface offers no grip. Lopez averages about 30 cm of snow per year with roughly 15 freeze-thaw cycles, making snow shedding critical to prevent ice dams and water backup. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels stay watertight even when snow begins melting. If you want to hold snow for insulation or prevent slides, snow guards install easily on the metal surface. The lightweight aluminum also means your roof won't sag under accumulated snow, which protects the structural integrity of older island homes.
Why doesn't aluminum rust like steel roofs do on the water?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—rust is iron oxide. Instead, aluminum develops a thin, invisible oxide layer that forms naturally and actually heals itself when scratched. In coastal salt-air environments like San Juan County, this matters enormously. Interlock panels are roofing-grade 3105-H24 or 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209), finished with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon on both sides—extra protection against salt spray and the ~1015 mm of annual rainfall Lopez receives. Steel roofs corrode aggressively in salt air; aluminum simply doesn't. That's why Interlock has been installed from coastal homes to Antarctic research stations since 1998.
Can a metal roof withstand Lopez's winter wind gusts?
Absolutely. San Juan County gusts reach about 111 km/h, and Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are engineered to handle that. The roof is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification—well above what you'll face here. The interlocking design means each panel locks to its neighbors on all four edges, so wind pressure pushes panels tighter together rather than forcing them apart. With proper fastening and underlayment, you get a unified system, not individual shingles that can lift. That's why the system works equally well in hurricane zones and mountain passes.
Do I need to reinforce my roof frame for metal roofing?
No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock Slate installs at roughly 0.41 lb per square foot—lighter than asphalt. The Mediterranean Tile profile is about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile, so it weighs only around 0.59 lb/sq ft. This matters on older island homes where timber framing may have settled. Because aluminum is so light, Interlock installs directly over most existing roofs without tearing off layers, which saves labor and disposal costs. Your house's structure bears less load, not more. If you've worried about whether a metal roof is overkill for your home's frame, aluminum's weight actually solves that concern entirely.
What's the hail rating, and does it help with insurance?
Interlock carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. While San Juan County's climate data doesn't flag severe hail risk, the Class 4 rating reflects durability that protects you if freak storms occur. Many insurers offer discounts for impact-rated roofs because Class 4 means fewer claims. Check with your provider; some will reduce your premium when you upgrade from asphalt to a Class 4-rated system. That discount, combined with the 30-year coating warranty against weathering, often offsets part of the upfront cost within the first few years.
What exactly does the lifetime warranty cover?
The Guardian Warranty is a non-prorated lifetime limited material warranty for the original owner—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. That means if anything fails in the materials, Interlock replaces it at no cost to you, whenever it happens. The warranty transfers once to the next owner for 50 years from completion, which boosts resale value because buyers see real protection in writing. The Alunar coating itself carries a 30-year warranty against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214 / D2244 measured). In Lopez's ~3119 annual sunshine hours and variable salt air, that's significant—your roof's appearance is guaranteed to hold.
How much upkeep does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or cedar?
Almost none. Asphalt shingles require annual inspections, algae treatment, and regular repairs; cedar shake roofs need staining, splitting prevention, and moss control in wet climates like Lopez, where you get about 1015 mm of rain yearly. Interlock is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance. The aluminum surface sheds debris, doesn't absorb water, won't crack in freeze-thaw cycles (you experience about 15 per year), and the coating protects against the salt spray and UV that degrade other materials. You might occasionally clear gutters or inspect flashing—the same task any roof requires—but there's no specialized cleaning, staining, or repair regimen. It's set-and-forget.
How long does installation take, and do you have to tear off the old roof?
Installation typically takes a few days depending on roof size and complexity. Because Interlock panels are so light—0.41 to 0.59 lb per square foot—they install directly over most existing asphalt or wood shingles without tear-off. That means no debris haul-away, no trip to the landfill, and lower labor costs. Your existing roof becomes the base layer. Interlock Metal Roofing (PNW) Inc. has served the region since 1997 and knows Lopez's specific installation conditions. The four-way interlocking system and proper fastening take precision, but the lightweight material makes the actual work faster and cleaner than traditional re-roofing. Current financing—no payments and no interest until Spring 2027—also eases the timeline pressure.
Is metal roofing actually better for the environment than asphalt?
Yes. Aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable, and Interlock ends the asphalt tear-off-to-landfill cycle that happens every 15–20 years with conventional shingles. When an asphalt roof dies, all those shingles become waste; aluminum, by contrast, is infinitely reusable. At end-of-life, your Interlock roof has scrap value and enters the recycling stream. Even during installation, because the panels install over existing roofs without tear-off, you avoid that disposal step entirely. Over a 50-year span, you're avoiding multiple landfill contributions that asphalt demands. For homeowners on San Juan County's islands, where waste management and environmental stewardship matter, that durability and recyclability align your roof choice with your values.
Can I get a Class A fire rating for a metal roof?
Yes. Interlock aluminum is non-combustible and Class A fire ratings are available. The material itself—roofing-grade aluminum—cannot burn or spread flame, which is why it achieves the highest fire classification. If you live in an area with wildfire risk, or you're simply concerned about fire safety given San Juan County's summers with about 3119 hours of sunshine, a Class A metal roof provides genuine peace of mind. Some insurance carriers offer discounts for Class A roofing. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 (reissued 2025) documents full code compliance under IBC and IRC standards, so contractors and inspectors recognize the rating immediately. Non-combustible materials are now widely preferred in building codes.
