Metal Shingles Gardner, MA Review 🇺🇸 — October 9, 2020 | Interlock®
Review: October 9, 2020 Completion: September 8, 2020I think that Interlock Roofing could have done a better job at vetting the subcontractor that they hire for installation of their product. In doing so, it would alleviate poor workmanship of the installation of their roofing system.

Metal Shingles Gardner, MA Review 🇺🇸 — September 11, 2017 | Interlock®
Review: September 11, 2017 Completion: September 1, 2017The one area would be I wanted to have more than two extra fasteners because where I live, there is a lot of wind. For some reason even though it was in the contract the extra fastener was omitted. This was unfortunate, but Michael did call me and apologized and put it in there if ever something happens in the future they will fix it. He was excellent. We are happy, with the product.

Metal Shingles Gardner, MA Review 🇺🇸 — March 30, 2016 | Interlock®
Review: March 30, 2016 Completion: February 29, 2016I feel that I was not valued at all after the contract was signed. I will not recommend your company to anyone since you communication is terrible and the product quality is still unknown. For the amount of money we spent on a roof I expected to be treated a lot better. Extremely disappointing. Communication by everyone Too many bad things made this experience awful. I really don't have much more to say about it. I wish I went in another direction now.

Gardner metal roofing FAQ
Will a metal roof handle Gardner's snow loads and ice buildup?
Yes—aluminum's smooth surface and light weight actually prevent ice dam formation better than asphalt. With Gardner averaging about 141 cm of snow annually and roughly 94 freeze-thaw cycles per year, your roof experiences repeated expansion and contraction. Interlock panels weigh as little as 0.41 lb/sq ft (compared to slate or tile at 10+ times heavier), so snow slides cleanly and structural stress stays minimal. The four-way interlocking seams shed water reliably even when freeze-thaw cycles are most aggressive, and the aluminum substrate won't split or warp under the cycling stress that damages wood and concrete tile.
How does aluminum hold up to Worcester County's freeze-thaw cycles?
Aluminum thrives in freeze-thaw environments because it doesn't absorb moisture—the metal oxide layer simply self-heals when scratched, with no rusting or rot possible. Gardner's 94 annual freeze-thaw days place significant demand on roofing; asphalt hardens and cracks in cold, wood splits, and concrete tile spalls when ice forms in pores. Interlock's 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209 roofing grade) maintains structural integrity across the full temperature swing. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating, warranted 30 years against fading and chalking, stays flexible through thousands of cycles, so your roof surface doesn't degrade where freeze-thaw stress is highest.
Why doesn't aluminum rust like steel roofing?
Aluminum contains no iron, so rust—the corrosion of iron oxide—cannot occur. When aluminum is exposed to air, a thin oxide layer forms instantly and seals the surface; if that layer is scratched, a new one heals automatically. Steel roofing, by contrast, relies on paint or zinc coating to block iron from oxidizing, and those coatings degrade, exposing bare metal to rust within years. Interlock uses roofing-grade aluminum (ASTM B209) with a Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish on both sides for extra durability in salt air and wet climates. Gardner receives about 1033 mm of annual rainfall and frequent moisture cycling; aluminum simply doesn't degrade the way coated steel does in these conditions.
Can Interlock metal roofing withstand Gardner's wind gusts?
Yes. Gardner's gusts reach about 113 km/h (70 mph), well within safe range for four-way interlocking panels. Interlock's warranty covers wind resistance up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification—nearly twice your typical gust speed. The four-way interlock design locks each panel to its neighbors horizontally and vertically, distributing wind load across the entire roof plane rather than relying on fasteners alone. This overlap-and-lock system has performed from coastal BC (exposed to 100+ mph Pacific gusts) to Antarctic research stations; your regional wind environment presents no structural risk. Installation over solid decking with proper underlayment adds further rigidity against uplift.
Does metal roofing perform better in hail, and can it lower my insurance?
Interlock carries the highest hail impact rating available—UL 2218 Class 4—and the Guardian warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Aluminum's flexibility absorbs impact energy without cracking or denting permanently the way asphalt or tile does. Some insurers recognize this durability and offer premium reductions on homes with metal roofing; contact your agent with the UL 2218 Class 4 rating and ICC-ES ESR-1790 documentation to explore options. Gardner's hail risk is lower than the Great Plains, but impact resistance still matters during severe spring storms. Metal roofing eliminates the asphalt-shingle claim cycle many homeowners face, so your long-term insurance history may improve.
Will I need to reinforce my home's structure for a metal roof?
No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's aluminum panels are extraordinarily light—the Mediterranean Tile profile installs at just 0.59 lb/sq ft, roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. Most homes built in the last 60 years were framed to support asphalt shingles (about 2-3 lb/sq ft), so aluminum at one-third that weight actually reduces structural demand. Even if your existing roof is wood shake or slate, Interlock installs directly over it without adding height or strain. Gardner's building department accepts metal roofing as a retrofit to older homes under IRC and IBC code (verified in ICC-ES ESR-1790, reissued 2025) precisely because the weight penalty doesn't exist.
Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt?
Over 50+ years, aluminum costs less per year than asphalt's repeated replacement cycle. Asphalt roofs last 15-25 years and require a full tear-off, haul-away, and reinstall every cycle—adding labor, waste-disposal, and disruption costs that compound over decades. Interlock's Guardian warranty provides lifetime limited coverage for the original owner (transferable 50 years for the next owner), so you're buying your last roof. The material won't split, crack, curl, rot, or lose impact resistance within your ownership. Current promotion: no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation. When you factor Gardner's 141 cm annual snow, 1033 mm rain, and 94 freeze-thaw days—each demanding re-roofing of asphalt every 15 years—aluminum's upfront cost becomes a single, permanent investment.
Can I get a metal roof that looks like slate, cedar shake, or tile?
Yes—Interlock offers five distinct profiles: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile, and Standing Seam. Each four-way interlocking aluminum panel replicates the visual profile and shadow line of its traditional namesake, so your home's exterior character remains unchanged. The metal panels install at one-tenth the weight of actual slate or tile (0.59 lb/sq ft vs. 12+ lb/sq ft), eliminating structural upgrades while maintaining curb appeal. All profiles carry the same durability—ICC-ES ESR-1790 compliance, UL 2218 Class 4 hail rating, 120 mph wind warranty, and 30-year coating durability. Choose the style that suits your Gardner home's architecture; the performance underneath is identical.
How much maintenance does a metal roof need?
Interlock requires virtually no maintenance—no patching, no re-coating, no seasonal inspection rituals. Asphalt shingles need inspection after storms, patching of leaks and curling, and eventual full replacement. Wood shake and tile demand regular cleaning, sealing, and replacement of damaged pieces. Aluminum cannot rot, split, or rust; the Alunar 70% PVDF finish is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading (per ASTM D4214 and D2244 standards), so repainting isn't needed. Gardner's 1033 mm annual rainfall and 141 cm snow simply drain away via the smooth, four-way interlocking seams. CALGreen has verified Interlock for reduced maintenance burden, which translates to no ladder work, no contractors, and no surprise costs over your roof's life.
With Gardner's heavy rainfall, how does metal roofing stay leak-free?
Four-way interlocking panels shed water faster than overlapping shingles because the seams lock horizontally and vertically, creating a continuous drainage plane. Gardner's 1033 mm annual rainfall (about 40 inches) demands reliable water management; aluminum's smooth surface and tight interlocks route water off faster than asphalt, which relies on gravity and sealant degradation over time. Installation over solid decking with ice-and-water underlayment adds a second water barrier, matching the redundancy of modern building codes (ICC-ES ESR-1790 compliance confirms this detail). The four-way interlock prevents water from being driven up into seams by wind-driven rain or capillary action, a common failure mode in shingle roofs during Gardner's nor'easters and spring storms.
