Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Lemont, Illinois
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |

What our customers are saying:
Now that our new Interlock Roofing system has been installed, we find the look to be extraordinary! It boasts sophistication and looks clean and elegant. This product is impressive not only by its looks but also by its clever and unique interlocking design. Almost more important than the attractive look of our new roof is the peace of mind we have gained with its many features. It’s a relief not to have to be concerned about losing shingles as a result of the high winds we experience regularly in our area. Also, having experienced ice dams this past winter, it is reassuring to know that they cannot occur with the design of this product. We are impressed with its many features. In addition to the two already mentioned, the inability of the shingles to curl, being fireproof, and the reflective properties are features that caught our attention. Knowing the product is guaranteed to last a lifetime and never have to re-roof is an added bonus. The installation of our new roof began four weeks after the materials had been delivered, and then took another four full weeks to complete the actual installation process. Although hampered by a couple of days of strong winds and a couple more of rain, Eric, our installer did an awesome job of handling our installation. He was very professional and personable at all times and was willing to answer and explain our questions. Eric is obviously very skilled at his profession and pays attention to detail, which contributed greatly to the outcome of our new roof. We would recommend this roofing system to anyone wanting to improve the look and value of their home, but would also caution him about the lengthy installation process and the inaccurate scheduling information we received. We believe this to be an outstanding product despite these problems.
The Interlock team was a pleasure to work with from beginning to end. Undertaking the re-roof of a 108-year-old home is a major process and investment. After speaking to many other roofers, we realized that Interlock offered the best value proposition, and we felt like they were going to be able to deliver on what they promised. Our salesperson, John Mondschean displayed his extensive experience in roofing by taking the time to listen to our goals, preferences and concerns, offering solutions and working with us to achieve the desired outcome. John was responsive to every request and stuck with us even after the contract was signed. We appreciated that he was always available to answer questions, give us updates and even bring color samples over one afternoon for us to double-check our selection. John embodies integrity and service. We were aware that due to current market conditions, we might have to wait a while for our materials to be delivered; however, Interlock exceeded our expectations and was able to get the materials to us a touch earlier than promised and started the installation within three days after delivery. The day the materials were delivered, we met Jesse, the lead installer who we worked with throughout the project. Jesse was awesome in explaining all the steps to the re-roof and answering our questions along the way. He took lots of pictures for us and explained how he would address our specific concerns like adding ventilation, condition of the chimney, placement of snow guards and ensuring that the construction didn’t negatively impact our neighbors. It was clear that Jesse has been installing Interlock roofing for a long time and is a true craftsman who takes pride in the quality of his work. Jesse and his crew went above and beyond to ensure that our neighbors landscaping, A/C units and other areas were properly protected. They also ensured that our property was well protected throughout, cleaned up every day and that they left the job site in great condition once the work was finished. We give the crew excellent ratings for the overall job they did on our new roof. We are very happy with the new roof and have recommended Interlock Roofing to several of our friends and neighbors. It is awesome to have everyone on the block comment on how nice the new roof looks. It really has improved our home’s durability, value and curb appeal. We would work with John, Jesse and the entire team again! They delivered on what they promised!
Dear John, I wish I had known about the Interlock Roofing System before I put the last new roof on twenty years ago. If I had, I would not have had to replace it again now. At least now I won’t need to worry about the roof ever again because of the lifetime limited warranty with its 50-year transferable and non-prorated features. When I first suggested to my wife that we consider a metal roof, she was concerned about the noise level during storms. This concern disappeared after the first storm as the noise level was much less than before the metal roof was installed. Speaking of installation, we were very happy with the way your installation crew did their job. They were careful with our landscaping and cleaned up each day and when they finished and left, the only sign of their having been there was the new roof itself. The new Interlock roof looks great, and we have been complimented on it by many neighbors as well as people passing by. Our home insurance company was also happy with the new roof and its Class 4 hail-impact-resistant rating, which will give us a discount on the insurance premium. We are very satisfied with the entire process of getting a new roof installed. From the initial discussion with the sales representative, the installation crew, and the final results, there were no surprises. We will also be very happy twenty years from now when we don’t have to put another roof on the house.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Lemont
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Lemont, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Lemont.
Will a metal roof hold up to Lemont's freeze-thaw cycles?
Yes—aluminum actually thrives in freeze-thaw climates because it has no iron to corrode and its oxide layer self-heals when scratched. Lemont sees about 81 freeze-thaw days per year, which breaks down lesser materials but leaves aluminum unaffected. The roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) won't crack, split, or rot as asphalt and wood shingles do under repeated temperature swings. The four-way interlocking panels also move slightly as temperature shifts, preventing the stress that causes traditional roof failure in harsh seasonal climates.
How does an Interlock metal roof handle heavy snow and ice dams?
The smooth, slippery aluminum surface naturally sheds snow and ice more effectively than asphalt or wood, reducing ice-dam formation that clogs gutters and causes leaks. Lemont receives about 70 centimeters of snow annually, and that weight sits lightly on the structure—the Slate profile weighs only 0.41 lb per square foot, while a comparable concrete or clay tile weighs roughly 28 times more. You can add snow guards if desired for visual snow retention, but the metal's inherent slickness and ultralight weight mean fewer ice-backup problems than heavier roofing types, especially during the thaw cycles this region experiences.
Why won't an aluminum metal roof rust like steel does?
Steel roofs rust because iron oxidizes; Interlock panels are aluminum, which contains zero iron and cannot rust no matter how many freeze-thaw cycles or rainy seasons it endures. Lemont receives about 1,102 millimeters of rain yearly, and the 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating (Alunar) applied to both sides of every panel—warranted 30 years against chalking and fading—shields the aluminum further. Even if the coating scratches, aluminum's self-healing oxide layer reforms automatically, making it fundamentally different from steel. For a home in Cook County's variable weather, you get a roof that lasts decades without rust stains, structural decay, or hidden corrosion underneath.
Can Interlock metal roofing handle Lemont's wind gusts?
Yes. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h)—well beyond the typical gusts Lemont experiences, which average around 20 km/h with occasional peaks near 102 km/h. The interlocking design distributes wind load across the entire roof assembly so no single panel lifts or tears free. Combined with correct installation to spec and a solid deck underneath, this system has performed in coastal salt-air environments and survived Antarctic research-station duty, so the seasonal wind patterns in Cook County pose no structural risk to a properly installed roof.
Does Interlock metal roofing have a hail rating, and could it lower my insurance costs?
Interlock carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurers recognize this top-tier rating and offer premium discounts on homes with Class 4-rated roofing; contact your agent with the UL listing number (Intertek 33876) to confirm eligibility. Because aluminum doesn't crack, split, or lose impact resistance over time the way asphalt shingles do, a metal roof's protection actually improves with age rather than degrading. Over Lemont's 81 annual freeze-thaw days, that durability means no hidden stress fractures that hail later exploits, so your impact resistance remains intact for decades.
Will an Interlock metal roof save money on cooling costs?
energy-efficient Interlock colors with 0.84 thermal emissivity and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny) reflect heat that dark asphalt absorbs, lowering cooling load and utility bills. Lemont gets about 3,056 sunshine hours annually—enough summer exposure for reflective coatings to make a real difference. Cool Roof Rating Council certification confirms the performance, so you're not relying on marketing claims but on third-party measured data. The lighter colors don't darken noticeably over time because the coating is warranted 30 years against fading, meaning the cooling benefit persists without maintenance; asphalt roofs lose reflectivity within years as they darken, forcing you back to air-conditioning waste.
What's the actual lifespan and warranty coverage for an Interlock metal roof?
The Guardian warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—no step-downs in coverage year one, year ten, or year fifty. It covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance; the moment one of those failures occurs, the manufacturer's obligation is the same whether it's year two or year forty. The warranty is one-time transferable, giving the next owner 50 years from completion, so you're selling the home with a roof that's still under coverage. Given that Lemont's climate—1,102 mm rain, 70 cm snow, 81 freeze-thaw days—stresses every material category, having non-prorated protection for the entire original ownership term eliminates future roof expense.
How long does installation take, and can you install over my existing roof?
Interlock panels install quickly because they're lightweight and four-way interlocking—no fastening dozens of overlaps per panel. Most residential roofs complete within a few days depending on size and complexity. Yes, you can install over an existing asphalt or wood roof if the deck is sound; the ultralight weight—Slate at 0.41 lb per square foot, Tile at 0.59 lb per square foot—means no structural reinforcement needed, unlike slate or concrete tile that require roof frame upgrades costing thousands. Lemont homes with older asphalt roofs benefit from avoiding a full tear-off: no landfill hauling, no dust on neighbors' properties, no structural stress during installation. Your local Interlock installer, serving the region since 2001, can assess your existing roof and confirm whether overlay or tear-off makes sense for your situation.
What maintenance does a metal roof actually need compared to asphalt or wood?
Virtually none. A solid deck and underlayment underneath make Interlock as quiet as asphalt in heavy rain, and the roof itself requires no annual inspection, no moss or algae treatment, and no sealing—asphalt and wood roofs demand all three to stay serviceable. The aluminum and PVDF coating don't degrade under UV, so color won't fade (30-year coating warranty), and no leaves or debris dig into the surface as they do with asphalt's sticky granules or wood's porous grain. Lemont's 1,102 mm of annual rainfall and frequent freeze-thaw cycles would keep you on a ladder cleaning and re-sealing traditional roofs yearly; a metal roof sits there performing without attention. CALGreen verification confirms the maintenance reduction is real, not assumed.
Is an aluminum metal roof actually more environmentally responsible than asphalt?
Yes, fundamentally so. Aluminum is about 95% recyclable and will be recycled at end of life; when an asphalt roof reaches 15–25 years, the entire tear-off—millions of tons nationally each year—goes to landfill where it stays for centuries. Interlock, manufactured since 1998 in Delta, BC, ends that cycle: the same aluminum can be melted and reformed into new roofing, automotive parts, or building stock indefinitely. Over Lemont's 70 cm of annual snowfall and 81 freeze-thaw days, asphalt deteriorates faster than in stable climates, shortening replacement intervals and accelerating landfill waste. Installing a roof that lasts your lifetime and transfers warranty coverage to the next owner means fewer tear-offs, fewer truck trips, and zero demolition debris—that's environmental responsibility built into the product itself, not a marketing claim.
