Review: August 15, 2023 Completion: July 31, 2023

John M. was the third roofing sales consultant I talked to, and I had two more scheduled. After listening to John explain all the advantages of the InterLock System and materials, I was 95% sold but I thought it might be a little out of my price range. I was going to wait and hear from the other two roofers before I made my decision. John asked me what it would take for me to make my decision right then. I told him, and he made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I cancelled the other two sales rep. meetings. Boy am I glad I did. Considering the amount of man hours put into the installation, I got a bargain! Jessie's team worked from 8AM to 7PM for a total of 8 days to complete the installation during July 2023 ( the hottest July ever recorded ). I don't know how they did it! Jessie answered all my questions during construction, and kept me informed of what would happen next. Some of the asphalt shingles on parts of the roof with a low slope had to be scraped off. The majority of the roof had a steeper slope, and the new metal roof could be installed directly on top. People had warned me that metal roofs were noisy during rain or hail events. Not true! The shingles and underlayment have actually muffled the sounds that I would hear coming from my old asphalt shingle roof. The ice and water shields that were on my existing chimneys and vents were extended farther up each one. Some of the vertical siding was temporarily removed and put back so new ice and water shield could be placed on top of the water and ice shield that was already there. I'm 70 years old so the lifetime guarantee may not mean much, but the ability to transfer to the next owner 50 more years of protection is huge! My wife and I are very satisfied with the quality of materials, and the outstanding installation work done by Jessie and his team. It's too bad that the rating companies only allow a 5 star rating for the best and most outstanding companies. A company like InterLock should get at least 10 stars.

Review: March 28, 2017

Dear Mr. Mondschean It has been slightly more than one week since the installation was completed, and I thought I would offer the following: Noise — Since completion, we have had two rainstorms, a four-inch snowfall, and a minute heavy hailstorm. The only annoying noise experienced (…think of a loud combo of cymbals & snare drums) was during the hailstorm. However, I am sure that with standard shingles, the amplitude would have been the same, only at a lower frequency (i.e. a bowling alley and/or Niagara Falls). Installation — Juan & Alex did an excellent job exercising care around existing installations (i.e. new plantings, aerials, wiring … ) and worked diligently even during the 50mph windy/gusty Wednesday. Upon completion, clean-up was very well done … not perfect, but better than I’ve seen in the last 20 years. Jesse also did well with coordination and follow-up. Satisfaction — I’m impressed with the materials & engineering involved in your roofing system. The interlocking method provides good rigidity & hopefully good liquid seepage resistance, while the individual shingle size should allow proper thermal expansion/contraction to prevent buckling. Visually, I’m completely satisfied. Performance-wise, ask me again in one year after everything has gone through a complete spring-summer-fall-winter cycle, thus establishing the credibility of your advertising propaganda.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Northbrook

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Northbrook, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Northbrook.

Will a metal roof handle Northbrook's freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or failing?

Yes—aluminum's crystalline structure resists freeze-thaw damage far better than brittle materials. Northbrook experiences about 82 freeze-thaw days annually across its typical 10.5°C mean temperature and ~73 cm of snow. Roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) flexes slightly as ice forms and melts rather than fracturing; the material contains no iron, so the freeze-thaw cycle cannot initiate rust. The four-way interlocking panel system also accommodates thermal expansion without panel separation—critical during the repeated temperature swings your region sees each winter.

Can an aluminum metal roof rust in a humid climate like Cook County?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. When exposed to moisture, aluminum forms a self-healing oxide layer that actually protects the metal underneath. Even if scratched during installation or by a branch, this oxide reforms automatically. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish—applied to both sides of every panel and warranted 30 years against corrosion—adds a second barrier. With Northbrook receiving about 993 mm of rain annually and winter moisture from ~73 cm of snow, this two-tier protection (oxide + coating) ensures durability without the rust staining, weakening, or perforation that affects steel or asphalt-over-steel products.

How does an aluminum roof handle Northbrook's snow load and ice dams?

Interlock's four-way interlocking panel system sheds snow and ice efficiently; the smooth, hard aluminum surface prevents ice from bonding as strongly as it does to asphalt. At ~73 cm of annual snowfall, this matters: ice dams form when heat escapes through traditional roofs, but a well-ventilated metal roof with proper underlayment maintains consistent cold at the eave, preventing the melt-and-refreeze cycle. The Shake and Slate profiles also provide a slight texture that helps snow grip during placement yet releases it cleanly once sun angle changes. Snow guards can be installed where needed to control slides onto walkways—an option that adds safety without compromising the roof's 120 mph wind warranty.

Do I need to reinforce my Northbrook home's structure for an aluminum metal roof?

Interlock's aluminum panels weigh between 0.41 and 0.59 lb/sq ft depending on profile—roughly 96% lighter than the concrete or clay tiles they replicate. This extraordinary lightness means no structural reinforcement is required, and the roof often installs directly over existing asphalt shingles, eliminating a costly tear-off. For Northbrook homes built in the mid-20th century, many with original wood trusses rated for asphalt (around 2–3 lb/sq ft), this weight difference is transformative: you gain the curb appeal of Mediterranean Tile or Cedar Shingle without engineering upgrades. Installation is faster, safer, and less invasive because the roof deck stays intact.

What's the real lifespan and warranty coverage for an Interlock metal roof?

The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—it covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance with no dollar caps or depreciation. The coating itself carries a separate 30-year warranty against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214 measured). After you sell, the warranty transfers once to the next owner for 50 years from completion date. In a climate with 82 annual freeze-thaw cycles and ~73 cm of snow, this durability is proven: Interlock has manufactured aluminum roofing since 1998 in Delta, BC, and installed panels from salt-air coastal homes to an Antarctic research station, so Northbrook's winters present no novel challenge.

Can an Interlock roof withstand Chicago-area wind gusts?

Yes. The four-way interlocking panel system is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Northbrook's typical daily-max winds average ~19 km/h, with occasional gusts reaching ~97 km/h—well within the roof's rated capacity. The four-way lock means each panel is mechanically fastened on all four edges, creating a unified system that distributes wind load across the entire roof surface rather than stressing individual fasteners. This design is verified in ICC-ES report ESR-1790 (reissued 2025 for IBC/IRC compliance). Even strong spring storms that gust near 97 km/h pose no risk to a properly installed Interlock roof.

Will a metal roof survive hail, and can I save on homeowner's insurance?

Interlock panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This top rating often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts; contact your agent with the UL 2218 Class 4 certification and ESR-1790 evaluation report. In Northbrook's climate of ~3051 annual sunshine hours but also heavy spring/summer storms, Class 4 impact resistance provides peace of mind that hail won't compromise the roof's integrity. Many insurers recognize that metal roofs reduce claim frequency and severity, so savings are common. Request a quote from your carrier once the material specification is confirmed.

How long does it take to install an Interlock roof, and can you install over my existing shingles?

Installation timeline depends on roof size and complexity but typically completes in 2–5 days. Yes, Interlock panels install directly over most existing asphalt roofs if the underlying deck is sound and ventilation is adequate—no tear-off required. This overlay approach saves weeks of labor, eliminates landfill disposal costs, and keeps your home occupied during the project. The installer (Interlock Metal Roofing, serving this region since 2001) inspects the deck, adds underlayment and flashing, then mechanically fastens the interlocking panels. The four-way lock system means panels are secure during installation—no exposed fasteners that can back out in wind or catch debris. A solid installation typically takes 1–2 weeks from inspection to completion.

Does an aluminum roof really lower cooling costs in summer?

energy-efficient colors achieve initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84, both measured by the Cool Roof Rating Council. This means aluminum reflects sunlight that asphalt absorbs as heat, reducing roof surface temperature significantly on sunny days. Northbrook receives about 3051 hours of annual sunshine, so this reflectance gain accumulates over the cooling season. Energy modeling by the U.S. Department of Energy shows metal roofs with high reflectance can lower attic temperatures 20–30°F compared to dark asphalt, reducing cooling load and runtime. While savings vary by home size, insulation, and air-conditioning efficiency, homeowners report 5–15% reductions in summer cooling costs—modest but steady over the roof's 50+ year life.

Is an aluminum roof better for the environment than asphalt shingles?

Aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable at end of life; when an Interlock roof eventually needs replacement (likely 50+ years from now), the panels are melted down and reused—not landfilled. In contrast, asphalt shingles end millions of tons to landfills annually because their fiberglass-and-bitumen matrix resists decomposition. Northbrook generates ~993 mm of rainfall and ~73 cm of snow yearly, so a traditional asphalt roof's granule loss accelerates weathering, requiring earlier replacement and more waste. An overlay installation (which Interlock supports) eliminates the tear-off waste entirely. Over a homeowner's lifetime, choosing aluminum breaks the disposable-asphalt cycle—you buy one roof, it lasts 50+ years transferable, and when it's finally recycled, the material enters a genuine circular economy rather than a landfill.
