Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Wheeling, Illinois
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
John M. was the third roofing sales consultant I talked to, and I had two more scheduled. After listening to John explain all the advantages of the InterLock System and materials, I was 95% sold but I thought it might be a little out of my price range. I was going to wait and hear from the other two roofers before I made my decision. John asked me what it would take for me to make my decision right then. I told him, and he made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I cancelled the other two sales rep. meetings. Boy am I glad I did. Considering the amount of man hours put into the installation, I got a bargain! Jessie's team worked from 8AM to 7PM for a total of 8 days to complete the installation during July 2023 ( the hottest July ever recorded ). I don't know how they did it! Jessie answered all my questions during construction, and kept me informed of what would happen next. Some of the asphalt shingles on parts of the roof with a low slope had to be scraped off. The majority of the roof had a steeper slope, and the new metal roof could be installed directly on top. People had warned me that metal roofs were noisy during rain or hail events. Not true! The shingles and underlayment have actually muffled the sounds that I would hear coming from my old asphalt shingle roof. The ice and water shields that were on my existing chimneys and vents were extended farther up each one. Some of the vertical siding was temporarily removed and put back so new ice and water shield could be placed on top of the water and ice shield that was already there. I'm 70 years old so the lifetime guarantee may not mean much, but the ability to transfer to the next owner 50 more years of protection is huge! My wife and I are very satisfied with the quality of materials, and the outstanding installation work done by Jessie and his team. It's too bad that the rating companies only allow a 5 star rating for the best and most outstanding companies. A company like InterLock should get at least 10 stars.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Wheeling
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Wheeling, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Wheeling.
Will metal roofing hold up through Wheeling's freeze-thaw cycles?
Yes—aluminum actually thrives in freeze-thaw conditions. With about 82 freeze-thaw days per year in Wheeling, your roof faces constant expansion and contraction. Aluminum's oxide layer self-heals when scratched, and the roofing-grade 3105-H24 alloy won't split, crack, or curl the way asphalt and wood do. The four-way interlocking panels move as one system, so thermal stress distributes evenly across the entire roof rather than concentrating at seams.
How does metal roofing handle snow load and ice dams in Illinois winters?
Metal panels shed snow effectively because their smooth, hard surface doesn't absorb moisture the way asphalt does. Wheeling receives about 73 centimeters of snow annually, and ice dams form when heat loss melts snow unevenly. With proper underlayment and solid deck, Interlock prevents that heat loss. The lightweight design—the Slate installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft—means your home's structure carries no extra burden from accumulated snow weight, unlike concrete or clay tile.
Can a metal roof actually rust in a climate as wet as Wheeling's?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. Instead, it develops a protective oxide layer that self-heals when scratched—a chemistry fact, not a marketing claim. Even in high-moisture climates like Wheeling, where you average 993 mm of rain yearly, aluminum stays sound indefinitely. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating on both panel sides adds 30-year protection against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214 measured), so your roof ages gracefully without structural compromise.
Will metal roofing blow off in Lake County's wind gusts?
No. Wheeling's typical wind gusts reach about 97 km/h, and Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist sustained winds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The mechanical interlock between panels prevents lifting at edges—the failure point for most roofs. UL 2218 Class 4 hail rating certification means the system handles both impact and wind pressure. Proper fastening to solid deck is the installation requirement; the product itself is engineered for worst-case weather.
Does a metal roof qualify for hail damage insurance coverage or discounts?
Yes. Interlock carries UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Most insurers recognize this and either lower premiums or waive hail deductibles for metal roofs. Bring your UL certification to your agent. In Wheeling's climate, with about 3,051 hours of sunshine annually offsetting winter severity, hail is occasional rather than chronic, but the protection is built in either way.
Do I need to reinforce my roof frame for a metal roof, or can it go over my existing roof?
No structural reinforcement needed. Interlock's aluminum profiles are extraordinarily light—the Mediterranean Tile, for example, installs at about 0.59 lb/sq ft, roughly 96% lighter than actual clay or concrete tile. This weight difference means the system installs directly over most existing asphalt roofs without additional framing. Your home carries the same load it does now. Wheeling's snow load (about 73 cm annually) poses no structural risk with aluminum, unlike a slate or tile reroof that would demand costly reinforcement.
How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or tile?
Metal requires far less. Asphalt shingles lose granules and develop moss in Wheeling's 993 mm annual rainfall, requiring cleaning and eventual replacement. Tile cracks under freeze-thaw stress across those 82 freeze-thaw days per year and must be individually resealed. Interlock aluminum needs occasional gutter cleaning and debris removal—that's it. The solid deck and tight panel interlock prevent water penetration. No resealing, no re-granulating, no moss treatment. CALGreen verification documents reduced maintenance as a sustainability benefit.
What's the actual warranty on an Interlock metal roof, and is it real?
The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original homeowner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It's one-time transferable: the next owner gets 50 years from completion. Non-prorated means there's no percentage payout reduction over time—a major difference from asphalt warranties that drop to nearly zero by year 15. Installed since 1998 and deployed from coastal salt-air homes to Antarctic research stations, the product backs its durability claim with real protection.
Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt over the life of the roof?
Yes, when you plan to stay in the home or count resale value. Asphalt costs less initially but requires replacement every 15–20 years—in Wheeling's 82 freeze-thaw annual cycles, that window shrinks further. Over 50 years, you'll reroof asphalt three times; with Interlock, you roof once. Factor in the 50-year transferable warranty, zero maintenance costs, potential insurance discounts for Class 4 hail protection, and energy-efficiency reflectance (up to 0.55 solar reflectance) reducing cooling loads during those 3,051 sunshine hours. The math favors aluminum, especially if you're building long-term equity.
Is there an environmental reason to choose metal roofing in Wheeling?
Yes. Aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable; at end of life, your roof returns to the material stream without landfill burden. Asphalt shingles—the regional standard—are torn off every 15–20 years and deposited in landfills. Over five decades, one home creates three asphalt tear-offs. Interlock's one-roof-for-life design eliminates that cycle. The aluminum itself contains no toxic binders and weathers cleanly with 993 mm of annual Wheeling rainfall washing it. If you're building or upgrading for resale, sustainability credentials increasingly matter to buyers and align with local building standards.
