Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Winnetka, Illinois
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
Customer Satisfaction 5/5 The workers on this installation were some of the best I’ve ever had. They were always nice and eager to satisfy and very hard working.
John M. was the third roofing sales consultant I talked to, and I had two more scheduled. After listening to John explain all the advantages of the InterLock System and materials, I was 95% sold but I thought it might be a little out of my price range. I was going to wait and hear from the other two roofers before I made my decision. John asked me what it would take for me to make my decision right then. I told him, and he made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I cancelled the other two sales rep. meetings. Boy am I glad I did. Considering the amount of man hours put into the installation, I got a bargain! Jessie's team worked from 8AM to 7PM for a total of 8 days to complete the installation during July 2023 ( the hottest July ever recorded ). I don't know how they did it! Jessie answered all my questions during construction, and kept me informed of what would happen next. Some of the asphalt shingles on parts of the roof with a low slope had to be scraped off. The majority of the roof had a steeper slope, and the new metal roof could be installed directly on top. People had warned me that metal roofs were noisy during rain or hail events. Not true! The shingles and underlayment have actually muffled the sounds that I would hear coming from my old asphalt shingle roof. The ice and water shields that were on my existing chimneys and vents were extended farther up each one. Some of the vertical siding was temporarily removed and put back so new ice and water shield could be placed on top of the water and ice shield that was already there. I'm 70 years old so the lifetime guarantee may not mean much, but the ability to transfer to the next owner 50 more years of protection is huge! My wife and I are very satisfied with the quality of materials, and the outstanding installation work done by Jessie and his team. It's too bad that the rating companies only allow a 5 star rating for the best and most outstanding companies. A company like InterLock should get at least 10 stars.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Winnetka
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Winnetka, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Winnetka.
Does a metal roof handle Winnetka's heavy snow and ice without leaking or collapsing?
Yes—aluminum's extraordinary lightness means your roof won't sag under snow load, even with Winnetka's annual 73 cm of snow. The four-way interlocking panels shed water and ice melt without ponding, and the sealed seams prevent leaks where traditional roofs fail. Because the Interlock Tile profile weighs about 96% less than concrete or clay tile, no structural reinforcement is needed, and the system installs directly over your existing roof. Over 69 freeze-thaw days per year, aluminum's oxide layer expands and contracts predictably without cracking, unlike brittle asphalt or wood shake.
How does aluminum roofing hold up to Winnetka's freeze-thaw cycles?
Aluminum naturally tolerates freeze-thaw because it's a single-phase metal with no moisture absorption or grain structure that splits under repeated freezing. With about 69 freeze-thaw days annually in Winnetka and ~1024 mm of rain exposure, asphalt and wood shake absorb water, freeze, expand, and eventually crack. Aluminum does not. The 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 alloy (ASTM B209) panels flex slightly under temperature swings, shedding ice rather than trapping it. The Alunar coating—a 30-year-warranted PVDF fluorocarbon—bonds to the metal itself, so it doesn't separate and peel the way surface-applied coatings do on composites.
Can an aluminum roof rust in Illinois's wet climate?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes into rust. Instead, aluminum forms a self-healing oxide layer that protects the underlying metal. When scratched (by a branch or installer's ladder), that oxide layer reseals itself within hours, even in Winnetka's wet environment with 1024 mm annual rainfall. The Alunar 70% PVDF finish adds a second defense, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. While steel roofs rust and require ongoing maintenance, Interlock panels remain corrosion-free for decades, making them a permanent solution rather than a recurring problem.
Will a metal roof blow off in Winnetka's wind and storms?
No. Interlock's four-way interlocking system is warranted to resist sustained winds up to 120 mph (193 km/h). Winnetka experiences typical gusts around 95 km/h, well within this range. The panels lock together on all four edges, creating a unified deck that braces itself rather than relying on fasteners alone. Each gust—even the worst on record for the area—creates downward or lateral pressure that tightens the interlocks rather than stressing them. The ICC-ES evaluation report (ESR-1790, reissued 2025) confirms installation to IBC/IRC standards for Illinois, and compliance is verified by your local Interlock installer, who has served the region since 2001.
Does metal roofing reduce homeowner's insurance costs in Winnetka?
Interlock metal roofing achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurers recognize this non-destructible durability and offer discounts on premiums; contact your agent with the Class 4 rating and ESR-1790 documentation to request a quote. Unlike asphalt, which requires costly replacement after large hail, aluminum survives impacts that would total a traditional roof. Over Winnetka's typical weather pattern with ~3094 sunshine hours annually and exposure to spring and summer storms, your roof's proven resilience is an asset insurers value.
Will a metal roof reduce my cooling costs in summer?
Interlock's energy-efficient colors reflect heat rather than absorbing it, lowering your cooling load on hot days and warm evenings. The Aged Copper Penny finish, for example, achieves initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84 (Cool Roof Rating Council rated). In Winnetka, where ~3094 annual sunshine hours strike your roof and temperatures climb during summer months, this reflectivity reduces the thermal burden on your attic and air conditioning. The energy savings accumulate year after year—asphalt roofs absorb and radiate heat, raising interior temperatures and cooling costs. Aluminum's light weight also means you're not adding thermal mass, just reflective surface protection.
Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?
Aluminum metal roofing is the last roof you'll buy. Asphalt typically lasts 15–20 years and requires replacement, while Interlock's lifetime limited warranty (non-prorated for the original owner) covers rusting, cracking, splitting, and impact loss. Over 40–50 years, you'll replace asphalt twice and send it to landfill; your aluminum roof remains intact, transferable to the next owner with 50 years of remaining coverage. The Guardian Warranty backs this promise. When you factor in tear-off labor, disposal fees, and business-interruption hassle, aluminum's higher upfront cost becomes a genuine investment—one that adds resale appeal and requires virtually no maintenance.
How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or tile?
Interlock requires minimal maintenance. There is no re-coating, no patching, no replacement of individual shingles or tiles—all routine costs with asphalt, wood shake, or clay tile. Aluminum panels don't rot, split, curl, or lose impact resistance over Winnetka's 69 freeze-thaw days per year or its 1024 mm annual rainfall. Occasional gutter cleaning and a visual inspection are all you need. The CALGreen building standard recognizes Interlock as a reduced-maintenance roof system, lowering your long-term ownership burden. Compare this to asphalt's need for algae treatment, tile's cracked-piece replacement, and wood's ongoing sealing—aluminum is fire-and-forget protection.
Can I get the look of slate, cedar shake, or tile in a metal roof?
Yes. Interlock offers five authentic profiles: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile, and Standing Seam. Each replicates the shadow lines, texture, and visual weight of the material it mimics—without the fragility, weight, or maintenance. The Slate profile suits traditional homes, Cedar Shingle evokes Craftsman charm, Shake adds rusticity, Tile brings Mediterranean or Spanish Colonial elegance, and Standing Seam delivers modern simplicity. All five profiles are manufactured from the same 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 roofing-grade aluminum (ASTM B209) with the same Alunar 70% PVDF finish and lifetime limited warranty. Your choice is purely aesthetic; the performance and durability are identical across all profiles.
How long does installation take and can you install over my old roof?
Installation typically takes 1–3 days depending on roof size and complexity. Interlock can install directly over most existing asphalt roofing (no tear-off required), eliminating labor costs and landfill waste—a major advantage in Winnetka where disposal fees and contractor time are high. The lightweight aluminum panels (Shingle at ~0.41 lb/sq ft) won't strain your structure, so reinforcement is unnecessary. Your local Interlock installer, serving the region since 2001, walks you through the timeline, any permitting (if required in Winnetka), and cleanup. Because installation is cleaner and faster than traditional re-roofing, you'll have your new roof finished before the next round of Illinois weather—whether snow, rain, or wind gusts to 95 km/h.
