Review: April 12, 2026Completion: May 30, 2016

We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!

Review: April 3, 2025Completion: July 31, 2024

Very heavy investment, but worth every cent! I worked with John and he was very mindful in planning everything out- especially the finer details of what was needed for the house and for the project. His crew was spectacular in their workmanship and friendliness. The only minor issue I had was the scheduling of the project- which is of nobody's fault. Things get done when they get done and those who are waiting, will be happy they waited. Not exaggerating, many customers will be quite pleased with the end result. I'm one of them. Many thanks, John, crew & Interlock!

Not only was the sales process easy, the installation guys were very respectful of my neighbors and my comfort while they were working. Now that it’s done I absolutely love the roof. It’s already made a huge difference in my electric use for cooling the house!

Review: May 8, 2024Completion: April 29, 2024

We are so proud of our new roof. It is so cool looking, it adds a great deal to the curb-appeal of our house. I also appreciate the security of knowing I'll never have to replace it or worry about it in even the strongest winds. I used to lose shingles in strong windstorms. Interlock was easy to work with. The workers were very respectful of my property and were meticulous about clean up after.

Review: November 30, 2023Completion: October 31, 2023

This project has been a roller coaster: First they were doing a good job, then not, then they assured us of the results and things looked good until we questioned something and they completely dropped the ball. They took our money and never followed up. Communication by Allen Gessell seems to be the weak link. He was horrible and ghosted us. It is a HUGE SHAME that what could have been a wonderful situation has become a fearful nightmare!

I'm really excited and pleased with the roof. I love everything about it in terms of color, style, and installation. Everything was done to our utmost satisfaction. Interlock Roofing could have improved the price. The price was expensive. It was a fantastic experience.

The entire team (from sales to installation) was very clear regarding the timeline and next steps for the entire project. The end product looks great and is a vast improvement compared to the appearance of our prior roof. Good clear communication. No issues on my end.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in South Chicago

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in South Chicago, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in South Chicago.

Will a metal roof hold up through South Chicago's freeze-thaw winters?

Yes—aluminum actually performs better than asphalt in freeze-thaw cycles because it has no organic material that swells, contracts, and cracks. South Chicago experiences roughly 70 freeze-thaw days per year, and asphalt shingles deteriorate faster under this stress. Aluminum's 3105-H24 alloy won't embrittle or develop stress fractures. The Alunar coating on both sides of the panel stays flexible across temperature swings, and the four-way interlocking system accommodates the minor expansion and contraction of the substrate without leaking. After 25+ years in similar climates, Interlock panels show none of the splitting or curling that plagues asphalt.

Can aluminum roofing rust like steel does?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes and causes rust. Instead, aluminum naturally forms a self-healing oxide layer when exposed to air; if that layer is scratched, it reforms automatically. Interlock panels use roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) with a Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish applied to both sides, giving extra corrosion resistance in any climate. With 1042 mm of annual rainfall and occasional salty air intrusions from Lake Michigan, this dual-coat protection matters. The 30-year warranty against chalking and fading reflects the coating's durability; the material underneath simply will not corrode.

How does a metal roof handle heavy snow and ice buildup?

Metal roofs shed snow more readily than asphalt because of their smooth surface and low friction, and Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are engineered to resist snow load safely. South Chicago averages about 68 cm of snow annually. The aluminum weighs only 0.41 to 0.59 pounds per square foot depending on profile—so light that structural reinforcement is never needed, and existing roof framing handles heavy snow loads without stress. Snow guards can be added if you want to control shedding. The sealed panel joints prevent water from infiltrating as snow melts, and the metal doesn't absorb moisture, so ice dams don't create the hidden decay that happens under asphalt.

Will my metal roof blow off in a South Chicago windstorm?

No. Interlock panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed per spec, and that rating comes from field testing and ICC-ES evaluation (ESR-1790). South Chicago's typical gusts reach about 93 km/h, well below that threshold. The four-way interlocking system locks each panel to its neighbors on all sides—a panel can't lift or separate without all adjacent panels failing simultaneously, which the warranty covers against. Insurance companies recognize this; you may qualify for a wind-resistance discount. After 25 years of installation across coastal and high-wind zones, field data confirms the system holds without fastener pull-through or seal failure.

What's the hail rating on a metal roof, and can it affect my insurance?

Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest rating available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 rating means the roof withstands repeated impacts that would dent or puncture asphalt or wood shakes. Some insurers offer premium discounts for Class 4 metal roofs because the claim rate is so low. South Chicago's hail risk is lower than the Great Plains, but the impact resistance provides peace of mind and measurable financial protection. Contact your agent; many carriers recognize Interlock's rating and may reduce your premium or increase your coverage without extra cost.

Can my house support a metal tile roof, or do I need a stronger frame?

Your house almost certainly doesn't need structural reinforcement. The Mediterranean Tile profile weighs only 0.59 pounds per square foot—roughly 96% lighter than real concrete or clay tile—so it installs directly over most existing roofs without additional framing, posts, or beams. A typical 2000 sq ft roof adds less than 600 pounds total. Asphalt weighs about the same. Because aluminum is so light, the ICC-ES evaluation (ESR-1790) confirms installation over existing asphalt, wood, and metal without upgrades in most cases. Your roofer will inspect the existing structure, but cost-saving reinforcement work is rarely necessary. This is why Interlock has been installed on everything from residential homes to Antarctic research stations.

How much work is a metal roof compared to asphalt or wood shakes?

Metal roofs require far less maintenance. Asphalt shingles need inspection every few years, moss removal in damp climates, and regular gutter cleaning; wood shakes require periodic treatment and inspection for rot and insects. Interlock aluminum stays clean with natural rainfall—about 1042 mm annually in South Chicago means no algae growth in the panels themselves. You still need to keep gutters and valleys clear, but the roof surface itself never splits, curls, rots, or needs sealing. The Alunar finish is engineered to resist dirt adhesion. Most owners report that visual inspections every 2-3 years and gutter maintenance are sufficient. The CALGreen certification acknowledges reduced maintenance compared to traditional materials.

How long does installation take, and can you install over my existing roof?

Installation typically takes 1-3 days depending on roof size and complexity. Yes, Interlock installs over most existing roofs—asphalt, wood, or metal—without tearing off, which saves labor and landfill costs. Your roofer inspects the deck for rot or sagging; if the substrate is sound, panels go directly over it. Removing the old roof adds time and cost; keeping it in place keeps your home weatherproof during the job and reduces debris. The lightweight aluminum (0.41–0.59 lbs/sq ft) means no stress on the structure. Interlock has been serving the region since 2001; your local installer will schedule around South Chicago's weather and coordinate access with your neighbors in dense neighborhoods.

Is a metal roof better for the environment than asphalt shingles?

Yes. Aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable at end of life; panels can be melted down and reformed indefinitely. Asphalt shingles end in landfills—over 20 million tons annually in North America—and cannot be recovered. Interlock panels manufactured since 1998 in Delta, BC eliminate the tear-off-and-waste cycle; when you install over an existing roof, you avoid removing millions of pounds of asphalt to the dump. Over a 50+ year lifespan (the Guardian warranty transfers 50 years to the next owner), you replace a roof once instead of 3 or 4 times. South Chicago's 1042 mm annual rainfall and industrial history make durability and end-of-life recovery meaningful. Choosing aluminum means one installation, one lifecycle, and genuine resource recovery.

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost in South Chicago?

Over the life of your home, it usually is. Asphalt shingles last 15–20 years and need replacement multiple times; Interlock carries a lifetime limited, non-prorated warranty for the original owner, transferable for 50 years to the next owner. Factor in three asphalt replacements, disposal costs, and labor inflation over 50 years, and metal becomes competitive or cheaper. You also avoid recurring maintenance, potential hail or wind damage claims, and moss treatment in South Chicago's 70-plus freeze-thaw days and 1042 mm rainfall. Energy savings from energy-efficient colors (solar reflectance up to 0.55) cut cooling costs in summer. Insurance discounts for Class 4 impact rating and wind resistance add value. Ask your roofer for a life-cycle cost comparison; most homeowners find the 30-year coating warranty and transferable ownership make the math work.

Is a metal roof a good choice for South Chicago’s climate?

Yes. South Chicago averages about 68 cm of snow, 1042 mm of rain, roughly 70 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 93 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
