Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Bronzeville, Illinois
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |

What our customers are saying:
We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!
Very heavy investment, but worth every cent! I worked with John and he was very mindful in planning everything out- especially the finer details of what was needed for the house and for the project. His crew was spectacular in their workmanship and friendliness. The only minor issue I had was the scheduling of the project- which is of nobody's fault. Things get done when they get done and those who are waiting, will be happy they waited. Not exaggerating, many customers will be quite pleased with the end result. I'm one of them. Many thanks, John, crew & Interlock!
Not only was the sales process easy, the installation guys were very respectful of my neighbors and my comfort while they were working. Now that it’s done I absolutely love the roof. It’s already made a huge difference in my electric use for cooling the house!
We are so proud of our new roof. It is so cool looking, it adds a great deal to the curb-appeal of our house. I also appreciate the security of knowing I'll never have to replace it or worry about it in even the strongest winds. I used to lose shingles in strong windstorms. Interlock was easy to work with. The workers were very respectful of my property and were meticulous about clean up after.
This project has been a roller coaster: First they were doing a good job, then not, then they assured us of the results and things looked good until we questioned something and they completely dropped the ball. They took our money and never followed up. Communication by Allen Gessell seems to be the weak link. He was horrible and ghosted us. It is a HUGE SHAME that what could have been a wonderful situation has become a fearful nightmare!
I'm really excited and pleased with the roof. I love everything about it in terms of color, style, and installation. Everything was done to our utmost satisfaction. Interlock Roofing could have improved the price. The price was expensive. It was a fantastic experience.
Scheduling
I think Interlock Roofing could have improved on the timing and having more flexibility in terms of when the project starts.
Communication on delivery and actual start time
The entire team (from sales to installation) was very clear regarding the timeline and next steps for the entire project. The end product looks great and is a vast improvement compared to the appearance of our prior roof. Good clear communication. No issues on my end.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Bronzeville
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Bronzeville, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Bronzeville.
Will a metal roof handle Bronzeville's freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or failing?
Aluminum expands and contracts with temperature swings, but it does so uniformly and predictably—no cracking, splitting, or delamination like asphalt or wood shakes experience. With about 69 freeze-thaw days per year in Cook County, your roofing material needs that flexibility. Interlock's 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) was engineered for exactly these conditions and has been installed successfully in similar climates since 1998. The four-way interlocking panels accommodate seasonal movement while staying locked together, and the Alunar 70% PVDF coating doesn't become brittle in cold or peel in thaw cycles.
Why does aluminum never rust, and how does that protect my roof in Illinois winters?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—rust requires iron to form. Instead, aluminum develops a microscopic oxide layer that self-heals when scratched or exposed, protecting the metal underneath indefinitely. That's a structural advantage in a climate with 1024 mm of annual rainfall and heavy freeze-thaw cycling. Steel roofs, by contrast, require constant coating maintenance or they corrode from the inside out. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum with a two-sided Alunar 70% PVDF finish, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading, so your roof's defense layer stays intact while the base metal simply cannot rust.
Does a metal roof handle snow and ice buildup better than asphalt shingles?
Metal roofs shed snow and ice more readily because the smooth, slick surface doesn't trap moisture the way asphalt does. Bronzeville gets about 73 cm of snow annually and endures roughly 69 freeze-thaw days, creating conditions where snow tends to refreeze on warmer days—a recipe for ice dams on traditional roofing. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels stay locked under snow load stress, and the light weight (Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft, Cedar Shingle at about the same) means no structural burden from accumulated snow. Optional snow guards can be installed if you want to control shedding, but the metal surface itself naturally resists the freeze-bond that makes ice dams so destructive on asphalt.
Can I install a metal roof on my home without expensive structural reinforcement?
Yes. Interlock's Slate profile installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft, Cedar Shingle at roughly the same, and even the Mediterranean Tile—which mimics heavy clay or concrete tile—weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft. That's roughly 96% lighter than real tile, so your existing roof framing carries no extra load. Most homes can support metal roofing over their current asphalt without a single structural beam upgraded. In Bronzeville's heavy snow zone (about 73 cm annually), that lightweight advantage is real: a traditional tile roof might require foundation and rafter work; Interlock panels install directly over most existing roofs per code ESR-1790. No reinforcement means no contractor surprises mid-project.
How does a metal roof perform in hail, and will it lower my insurance costs?
Interlock is rated UL 2218 Class 4, the highest impact rating available, and the Guardian Warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches—a level of hail resistance that stops most damage before it starts. Many insurers recognize that durability and offer premium discounts for Class 4 metal roofing; contact your agent with the UL 2218 rating and warranty details to see your savings. In Cook County's climate, where wind gusts reach about 95 km/h and severe weather is a real risk, that Class 4 rating has prevented costly claims for homeowners across North America. The non-combustible aluminum (Class A fire classification available) and impact resistance together often make metal roofing the insurer's preferred choice.
Will a metal roof keep my home cooler in summer and reduce cooling costs?
Interlock's energy-efficient colors have a thermal emissivity of 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny), meaning they bounce heat away rather than absorb it like dark asphalt does. Bronzeville receives about 3094 sunshine hours annually, so reflectivity matters. Cool roofs reduce the temperature under your roof deck by 20–30 degrees Fahrenheit on a sunny day, lowering air-conditioning load and extending compressor life. The energy-efficiency rating puts your roof in the Cool Roof Rating Council database, often qualifying for utility rebates. In a climate with warm summers and cold winters, reflective metal roofing pays back a portion of its cost through lower summer cooling and reduced thermal cycling stress on your home's structure.
Can metal roofing withstand Bronzeville's wind gusts and storms?
Cook County's typical wind gusts reach about 95 km/h, sometimes higher in storms. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The interlocking design—each panel locks to its neighbors on all four sides—distributes wind load across the entire roof rather than relying on fasteners alone. No fastener failure, no panel lift, no separation. That engineering is backed by ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 (reissued 2025 for current building code), so your installation meets or exceeds Bronzeville building standards. Homeowners in storm-prone regions often see metal roofing as the last roof purchase because wind damage simply doesn't happen at the rates it does on asphalt or wood.
How long will a metal roof actually last, and what does the warranty really cover?
The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—it covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. Because aluminum cannot rust and doesn't absorb water, those failure modes simply don't occur; the warranty reflects real-world durability. The warranty is also one-time transferable, giving the next homeowner 50 years of protection from completion. In practice, metal roofs outlast multiple rounds of asphalt shingles; many Interlock installations from 1998 onward remain in service today. Cook County's freeze-thaw cycling (about 69 days per year) and 73 cm annual snow stress roofing materials hard, but aluminum's flexibility and the two-sided Alunar 70% PVDF finish (warranted 30 years against chalking) are engineered for exactly those conditions. A metal roof is genuinely your last roof.
What maintenance does a metal roof actually need, and how does it compare to asphalt or tile?
Interlock requires no coating reapplication, no patching, no annual sealing, and no replacement of individual damaged shingles. Twice-yearly gutter cleaning and an occasional inspection are all that's needed. Asphalt shingles require raking, algae treatment, and eventual tear-off to landfill. Real tile and slate demand regular professional re-pointing, mortar repair, and partial replacement when pieces crack. CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance, aluminum roofing ends the cycle. With 1024 mm of annual rainfall and 73 cm of snow in Cook County, your roof endures constant moisture exposure—asphalt deteriorates under that stress, but aluminum's oxide layer self-heals and the Alunar 70% PVDF coating resists chalking and fading by design. Maintenance savings pay dividends over the roof's 30–50 year life.
Does Interlock have a local installer serving Bronzeville and Cook County?
Yes. Interlock Metal Roofing has been serving the region since 2001 and maintains a service area throughout Cook County and the greater Chicagoland area. That local presence means faster response, familiarity with Bronzeville's climate and building codes, and direct accountability. Your installer can guide you through profile selection (Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Standing Seam, and Mediterranean Tile are all available), coordinate installation over your existing roof when possible, handle permitting and inspections, and back the work with the Guardian Warranty. A local installer who has weathered 20+ years of Illinois freeze-thaw cycles and storm seasons understands what works here. Contact Interlock directly to discuss your roof, get a timeline, and confirm your project qualifies for over-roof installation, which often saves time and money by eliminating tear-off and disposal.
