Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Near South Side, Illinois
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!
Very heavy investment, but worth every cent! I worked with John and he was very mindful in planning everything out- especially the finer details of what was needed for the house and for the project. His crew was spectacular in their workmanship and friendliness. The only minor issue I had was the scheduling of the project- which is of nobody's fault. Things get done when they get done and those who are waiting, will be happy they waited. Not exaggerating, many customers will be quite pleased with the end result. I'm one of them. Many thanks, John, crew & Interlock!
Not only was the sales process easy, the installation guys were very respectful of my neighbors and my comfort while they were working. Now that it’s done I absolutely love the roof. It’s already made a huge difference in my electric use for cooling the house!
We are so proud of our new roof. It is so cool looking, it adds a great deal to the curb-appeal of our house. I also appreciate the security of knowing I'll never have to replace it or worry about it in even the strongest winds. I used to lose shingles in strong windstorms. Interlock was easy to work with. The workers were very respectful of my property and were meticulous about clean up after.
This project has been a roller coaster: First they were doing a good job, then not, then they assured us of the results and things looked good until we questioned something and they completely dropped the ball. They took our money and never followed up. Communication by Allen Gessell seems to be the weak link. He was horrible and ghosted us. It is a HUGE SHAME that what could have been a wonderful situation has become a fearful nightmare!
I'm really excited and pleased with the roof. I love everything about it in terms of color, style, and installation. Everything was done to our utmost satisfaction. Interlock Roofing could have improved the price. The price was expensive. It was a fantastic experience.
Scheduling
I think Interlock Roofing could have improved on the timing and having more flexibility in terms of when the project starts.
Communication on delivery and actual start time
The entire team (from sales to installation) was very clear regarding the timeline and next steps for the entire project. The end product looks great and is a vast improvement compared to the appearance of our prior roof. Good clear communication. No issues on my end.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Near South Side
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Near South Side, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Near South Side.
Will a metal roof hold up to Chicago's freeze-thaw cycles?
Yes—aluminum actually thrives in freeze-thaw conditions because it has no water absorption. Near South Side experiences about 69 freeze-thaw days per year, which breaks down asphalt and causes wood to split and crack. Aluminum's oxide layer doesn't degrade when water freezes in surface scratches; the layer self-heals. The 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 alloy won't expand and contract unevenly the way composite materials do, so you won't see the curling and buckling common in older neighborhoods after a harsh winter.
Does Interlock handle heavy snow loads on a Cook County roof?
Interlock's four-way interlocking panels shed snow reliably even under Near South Side's typical 73 cm annual snowfall. The panels lock so tightly that snow doesn't migrate into seams or pool at transitions. Because aluminum weighs just 0.41 lb/sq ft for the Shingle profile—about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—your roof structure carries the snow load with ease, and no reinforcement is needed. Snow guards are available if you want to control shedding on lower-pitched roofs; the lightweight system handles them without stress.
How does a metal roof prevent leaks in a rainy climate?
The four-way interlocking design prevents water from entering gaps between panels, even during Near South Side's average 1024 mm of annual rainfall. Each panel locks top, bottom, left, and right to its neighbors, creating a continuous sealed surface. Water that contacts the panel sheds downward by gravity; underneath, a solid deck and underlayment (installed per ICC-ES ESR-1790 specs) channel any moisture toward gutters. Unlike asphalt, which absorbs water and degrades, aluminum is impervious—the surface never softens or swells, so the seal integrity doesn't weaken over decades.
Why does aluminum resist rust better than steel roofing in Illinois?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron; the rusting process requires iron to oxidize. Instead, aluminum develops a thin, invisible oxide layer that self-repairs when scratched—a property unique to the metal. Steel, by contrast, oxidizes continuously and requires paint or coatings to slow the process. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 aluminum with a Alunar® 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish on both sides, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. In Cook County's humid environment with freeze-thaw stress, this distinction means your roof's structural integrity stays intact while steel gutters and fasteners around it may corrode.
Can Interlock stand up to Cook County wind gusts?
Yes. The four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist sustained winds up to 120 mph, which far exceeds Near South Side's typical daily-max winds of about 25 km/h and rare gusts to 95 km/h. Each panel locks firmly to its neighbors, distributing wind load across the entire roof plane rather than letting individual shingles lift or flutter. This continuous, rigid connection is why Interlock panels perform so well in high-wind testing. Unlike asphalt shingles, which can lift and tear, or standing-seam panels that depend on fasteners alone, the interlocking system gives you inherent structural stability in seasonal storms.
Do I need to reinforce my house framing for a metal roof?
No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's lightweight construction—the Mediterranean Tile profile installs at just 0.59 lb/sq ft, about 96% lighter than traditional clay or concrete tile—means most existing roof structures can carry the system without modification. A typical asphalt roof weighs 3–5 lb/sq ft; Interlock Shingle weighs 0.41 lb/sq ft. This matters in Chicago's climate because a lighter load reduces stress from snow (Near South Side averages 73 cm annually) and means no expensive framing upgrades. You can install Interlock directly over most existing roofs, saving the cost of a full tear-off and disposal.
Will hail damage hurt my metal roof, and can I get an insurance discount?
Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 means the roof resists severe impacts that would dent or puncture asphalt or wood. Some insurance companies offer premium discounts for Class 4-rated roofs because the risk of interior water damage and claim frequency drops dramatically. While Near South Side's hail exposure is moderate compared to plains states, the Class 4 rating protects you against unexpected severe storms and strengthens your home's overall resilience. Contact your insurer about discount eligibility once the roof is installed.
Does a metal roof really save money on cooling costs in Illinois?
energy-efficient colors with thermal emissivity 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 reduce cooling load in summer while Near South Side receives about 3094 sunshine hours per year. These reflective coatings bounce heat away before it enters the attic, lowering air-conditioning demand on hot days. Asphalt shingles, by contrast, absorb heat and transfer it indoors. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating confirms measurable energy savings. In a city where summer cooling is routine and your roof faces 3000+ hours of sun annually, this reflectance translates to lower energy bills over the roof's lifetime—a hidden but real value that compounds year after year.
What's the real lifetime cost difference between Interlock and asphalt shingles?
Asphalt typically costs less upfront but requires replacement every 15–25 years; Interlock costs more initially but lasts decades longer with zero need for tear-off cycles. A typical Cook County home might install asphalt three times in 50 years—three disposal bills, three installation fees, three supply-chain disruptions. Interlock's lifetime limited warranty (non-prorated for the original owner, transferable 50 years from completion) eliminates that cycle. When you factor in avoided labor, disposal, and landfill costs over a 50-year ownership window, the per-year cost of Interlock becomes competitive—and if you sell, the transferable warranty adds resale value that asphalt cannot match.
What does Interlock's warranty actually cover, and how long does it last?
The Guardian warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. Because aluminum cannot rust and contains no organic material, these common failure modes don't apply—the warranty protects against defects in manufacture, not normal wear. The warranty transfers once to the next owner for 50 years from completion, giving buyers peace of mind and you a selling point. This depth of coverage reflects the engineered durability of 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 aluminum with a 30-year PVDF coating warranty. No asphalt or composite shingle offers comparable protection.
Is a metal roof a good choice for Near South Side’s climate?
Yes. Near South Side averages about 73 cm of snow, 1024 mm of rain, roughly 69 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 95 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
