| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |

What our customers are saying:
We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!
Very heavy investment, but worth every cent! I worked with John and he was very mindful in planning everything out- especially the finer details of what was needed for the house and for the project. His crew was spectacular in their workmanship and friendliness. The only minor issue I had was the scheduling of the project- which is of nobody's fault. Things get done when they get done and those who are waiting, will be happy they waited. Not exaggerating, many customers will be quite pleased with the end result. I'm one of them. Many thanks, John, crew & Interlock!
Not only was the sales process easy, the installation guys were very respectful of my neighbors and my comfort while they were working. Now that it’s done I absolutely love the roof. It’s already made a huge difference in my electric use for cooling the house!
We are so proud of our new roof. It is so cool looking, it adds a great deal to the curb-appeal of our house. I also appreciate the security of knowing I'll never have to replace it or worry about it in even the strongest winds. I used to lose shingles in strong windstorms. Interlock was easy to work with. The workers were very respectful of my property and were meticulous about clean up after.
This project has been a roller coaster: First they were doing a good job, then not, then they assured us of the results and things looked good until we questioned something and they completely dropped the ball. They took our money and never followed up. Communication by Allen Gessell seems to be the weak link. He was horrible and ghosted us. It is a HUGE SHAME that what could have been a wonderful situation has become a fearful nightmare!
I'm really excited and pleased with the roof. I love everything about it in terms of color, style, and installation. Everything was done to our utmost satisfaction. Interlock Roofing could have improved the price. The price was expensive. It was a fantastic experience.
Scheduling
I think Interlock Roofing could have improved on the timing and having more flexibility in terms of when the project starts.
Communication on delivery and actual start time
The entire team (from sales to installation) was very clear regarding the timeline and next steps for the entire project. The end product looks great and is a vast improvement compared to the appearance of our prior roof. Good clear communication. No issues on my end.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Near North Side
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Near North Side, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Near North Side.
Will a metal roof handle Chicago's freeze-thaw cycles?
Yes — aluminum's non-corrosive oxide layer actually strengthens through repeated freezing and thawing. Near North Side experiences about 69 freeze-thaw days yearly, plus roughly 73 cm of snow and 1024 mm of rain, creating conditions that crack asphalt shingles and wood. Aluminum expands and contracts uniformly without splintering, rotting, or surface degradation. The four-way interlocking panels accommodate movement while staying sealed, and the roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) maintains its structural integrity indefinitely through these cycles.
How does a metal roof perform with Chicago snow and ice buildup?
Metal's smooth surface naturally sheds snow and ice rather than trapping moisture the way asphalt does. With about 120 cm of snow annually and gusts reaching 95 km/h, your region benefits from a material that doesn't absorb water into the substrate. The Slate and Cedar Shingle profiles offer textured aesthetics while shedding; optional snow guards can be added above walkways or driveways if desired. Unlike wood shakes that trap ice and wood rot, aluminum remains dimensionally stable year-round, preventing the ice dams that lead to costly interior water damage.
Can a metal roof withstand Near North Side's wind gusts?
Yes — the four-way interlocking panel system is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph, and Cook County's typical gusts of about 95 km/h (59 mph) fall well within that safety margin. The mechanical interlock between adjacent panels (not fastened edges) distributes wind load across the entire roof assembly, eliminating the peel-away failures common in shingle systems. Over 25 years of Chicago winters, that margin of safety protects against both seasonal nor'easters and sudden microbursts.
Is metal roofing really worth the upfront cost in Cook County?
No — this is the last roof you'll install. While initial cost exceeds asphalt, the lifetime limited non-prorated material warranty (transferable 50 years to the next owner) means you'll never pay for roof replacement again. Asphalt roofs typically cost $8,000–$15,000 to replace every 15–20 years; over 50 years, that's two to three replacement cycles. Aluminum's ~95% recyclability also eliminates landfill fees at end-of-life. Factor in zero maintenance, no gutter cleaning from rotting granules, and no insurance claims from hail (UL 2218 Class 4 rated), and the total cost of ownership heavily favors metal.
Why can't aluminum roofs rust like steel ones?
Aluminum contains no iron, so rust — the chemical breakdown of iron oxide — is physically impossible. Instead, aluminum forms a thin, self-healing oxide layer that actually protects the metal underneath. When scratched during installation, this layer reforms automatically within days. The roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) is paired with a Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating on both sides, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. In Cook County's mix of rainfall (1024 mm yearly), freeze-thaw stress, and occasional salt-laden winter roads, this corrosion immunity is especially valuable compared to steel, which rusts within 10–15 years in similar conditions.
Will my insurance company offer discounts for a hail-resistant metal roof?
Many do. Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating — the highest available — and the Guardian Warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 hail ratings often qualify homeowners for insurance premium reductions, sometimes 10–25% depending on your insurer. Given that Near North Side sits in a region prone to spring and summer severe weather, documenting your roof's impact resistance when filing a claim or renewing your policy can result in measurable savings. Contact your agent with the UL 2218 Class 4 rating to confirm eligibility.
Can I get the look of slate, cedar shake, or tile in metal?
Yes — Interlock offers five profiles: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Standing Seam, and Mediterranean Tile, each with authentic texture and shadow lines cast by the interlocking panels. The Slate mimics natural stone, while the Shake profile replicates hand-split wood grain without the rot risk. The Mediterranean Tile profile delivers the curved-barrel aesthetic at about 96% lighter weight than real clay or concrete tile — so no costly structural reinforcement is needed. You can install these profiles over most existing roofs because of aluminum's ultralight weight (~0.41 lb/sq ft for Shingle, ~0.59 for Tile), letting you choose authentic appearance without the maintenance burden wood or tile demand in Chicago's 69 annual freeze-thaw days.
What maintenance does a metal roof require in the Chicago climate?
Virtually none. Unlike asphalt shingles that shed granules (clogging gutters yearly), wooden shakes that split and rot through freeze-thaw cycles, or tile that cracks, aluminum won't splinter, curl, or degrade. You'll never pressure-wash, re-caulk seams, or replace individual damaged shingles. Gutters stay clean because there's no granule loss. The Alunar coating is self-cleaning in rain; even with 1024 mm of annual rainfall, natural runoff keeps it looking new. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 and CALGreen verification both cite reduced maintenance as a key advantage. In Cook County's demanding climate, this durability translates directly to 25+ years of zero repair calls.
Do you have local installers in Near North Side?
Yes — Interlock Metal Roofing has served the region since 2001 and operates throughout Cook County. Our local team understands Chicago's heavy snow loads (about 120 cm yearly), gusts to 95 km/h, and the freeze-thaw damage pattern (69 days annually) that trips up installers unfamiliar with the climate. We install to ICC-ES ESR-1790 specifications and stand behind the Guardian Warranty with direct local support. When you call with questions about your roof's performance or coverage, you're speaking with installers who know your neighborhood's weather challenges firsthand.
Does a metal roof save money on air conditioning?
Yes, especially with energy-efficient colors. Interlock's reflective coatings achieve thermal emissivity of 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (on Aged Copper Penny), meaning they reflect the sun's heat rather than absorbing it like dark asphalt. In a city with about 3094 sunshine hours yearly, that reflection directly reduces cooling load in summer. The Cool Roof Rating Council certification confirms these values against industry standards. You won't see dramatic cooling savings in Chicago's temperate 10.5°C annual mean, but the reflectivity extends your roof's life by reducing thermal stress, and lighter-colored profiles qualify for energy-efficiency rebates in some jurisdictions.
Is a metal roof a good choice for Near North Side’s climate?
Yes. Near North Side averages about 73 cm of snow, 1024 mm of rain, roughly 69 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 95 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
