Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Old Town, Illinois
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |

What our customers are saying:
We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!
Very heavy investment, but worth every cent! I worked with John and he was very mindful in planning everything out- especially the finer details of what was needed for the house and for the project. His crew was spectacular in their workmanship and friendliness. The only minor issue I had was the scheduling of the project- which is of nobody's fault. Things get done when they get done and those who are waiting, will be happy they waited. Not exaggerating, many customers will be quite pleased with the end result. I'm one of them. Many thanks, John, crew & Interlock!
Not only was the sales process easy, the installation guys were very respectful of my neighbors and my comfort while they were working. Now that it’s done I absolutely love the roof. It’s already made a huge difference in my electric use for cooling the house!
We are so proud of our new roof. It is so cool looking, it adds a great deal to the curb-appeal of our house. I also appreciate the security of knowing I'll never have to replace it or worry about it in even the strongest winds. I used to lose shingles in strong windstorms. Interlock was easy to work with. The workers were very respectful of my property and were meticulous about clean up after.
This project has been a roller coaster: First they were doing a good job, then not, then they assured us of the results and things looked good until we questioned something and they completely dropped the ball. They took our money and never followed up. Communication by Allen Gessell seems to be the weak link. He was horrible and ghosted us. It is a HUGE SHAME that what could have been a wonderful situation has become a fearful nightmare!
I'm really excited and pleased with the roof. I love everything about it in terms of color, style, and installation. Everything was done to our utmost satisfaction. Interlock Roofing could have improved the price. The price was expensive. It was a fantastic experience.
Scheduling
I think Interlock Roofing could have improved on the timing and having more flexibility in terms of when the project starts.
Communication on delivery and actual start time
The entire team (from sales to installation) was very clear regarding the timeline and next steps for the entire project. The end product looks great and is a vast improvement compared to the appearance of our prior roof. Good clear communication. No issues on my end.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Old Town
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Old Town, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Old Town.
Will a metal roof handle Old Town's freeze-thaw cycles without cracking?
Aluminum expands and contracts minimally compared to wood or concrete, so freeze-thaw cycling poses no cracking risk. Old Town experiences roughly 69 freeze-thaw days per year across an average temperature of 10.5°C, creating the conditions where wood shakes split and clay tile fractures. Interlock's 3105-H24 aluminum alloy has been installed in similar cold climates for over 25 years without frost-related failure. The four-way interlocking panels also accommodate micro-movement without stress concentration, and the Alunar 70% PVDF coating (warranted 30 years) seals panel edges against moisture infiltration during thaw cycles.
Can an aluminum roof rust in Cook County's climate?
No. Aluminum contains no iron and cannot rust, regardless of humidity or seasonal moisture. When aluminum's surface oxidizes, the oxide layer self-heals, protecting the underlying metal indefinitely. Cook County's approximately 1024 mm of annual rainfall and 73 cm of snow create wet conditions year-round, but these only accelerate corrosion in steel. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209), the same material trusted in coastal salt-air installations since 1998. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating is applied to both panel sides for extra protection, and the Guardian Warranty covers rust—a promise that makes sense only because perforation from rust is physically impossible.
How does a metal roof manage Old Town's snow load and ice dams?
Smooth metal surfaces shed snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt shingles, reducing ice-dam formation. Old Town averages about 73 cm of snow annually, and the Interlock panels' four-way interlocking design locks each piece firmly in place even as wind gusts reach 95 km/h during winter storms. The lightweight construction—roughly 0.41 lb/sq ft for the Slate profile—means no structural reinforcement is needed, and the entire assembly can be installed over your existing roof. If snow retention is desired for aesthetic reasons, snow guards can be added to the metal surface; the panel profile you choose (Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle, Tile, or Standing Seam) will determine visual appearance while the underlying aluminum handles the load.
Is a metal roof a good long-term investment compared to asphalt shingles?
Over a 50+ year lifespan, metal roofing typically costs less per year than the cycle of asphalt replacements. Asphalt roofs last 15–20 years in climates like Old Town's, where 69 freeze-thaw days per year accelerate granule loss and curling. Interlock's Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited for the original owner—non-prorated material coverage—and transfers to the next owner for 50 years from completion, eliminating replacement costs entirely for two ownership periods. That single roof outlasts three to four asphalt installations. You'll also avoid the labor and landfill tipping fees of tear-off cycles. Energy savings from energy-efficient colors (up to 0.55 solar reflectance on Aged Copper Penny) further reduce cooling costs across the roughly 3094 sunshine hours Old Town averages annually.
Can a metal roof withstand Old Town's wind gusts and storms?
Yes. Interlock panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Old Town's typical daily-max winds average 25 km/h with gusts up to 95 km/h—well below that threshold. The four-way interlocking design is the key: each panel locks to its neighbors on all four sides, distributing wind load across the entire roof assembly rather than relying on fasteners alone. This interlocking also prevents flutter and billowing that can loosen fasteners over time. The UL 2218 Class 4 hail rating and 120 mph wind warranty work together to give you confidence that the same installation will handle both Old Town's winter gusts and any severe weather the region experiences.
Do I need to reinforce my roof framing before installing a metal roof?
No structural reinforcement is required. Interlock's aluminum panels are extraordinarily light—the Mediterranean Tile profile installs at roughly 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. This weight advantage means the panels can be installed directly over most existing asphalt shingle roofs, saving both cost and demolition labor. The Slate profile weighs only about 0.41 lb/sq ft. Your home's existing framing has already carried the weight of whatever roofing material is currently in place, so it can easily handle aluminum. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 (reissued 2025) confirms code compliance for retrofit installation, and the four-way interlocking design distributes loads evenly, preventing localized stress that might occur with heavier or less rigid alternatives.
Will my insurance rates drop with a metal roof rated for hail?
Many insurers offer discounts for roofs with UL 2218 Class 4 impact ratings—the highest available—and Interlock achieves this rating as standard. The warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. In Old Town's climate, where hail can coincide with the region's 95 km/h wind gusts during spring and summer storms, a Class 4 roof demonstrates durability that underwriters reward. Contact your current insurer to ask whether they offer a discount for Class 4 metal roofing; some carriers provide 10–15% premium reductions, offset by the higher upfront cost. Over a 50-year Guardian Warranty term, that discount compounds significantly. Document the UL 2218 Class 4 certification with your insurer to ensure the discount is applied.
How much maintenance does an Interlock metal roof require?
Virtually none. Aluminum panels require no painting, sealing, or staining—the Alunar 70% PVDF coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading and protects both sides of each panel. Unlike asphalt shingles, which shed granules during Old Town's roughly 69 freeze-thaw cycles per year, or wood shakes, which split and require periodic replacement, Interlock panels do not degrade from weather exposure. Occasional gutter cleaning and debris removal (leaves, branches) are the only tasks. The CALGreen-verified design confirms reduced maintenance requirements. With approximately 1024 mm of annual rainfall, a solid deck and proper underlayment (standard installation) ensure the roof sheds water silently, and the interlocking seams prevent leaf and debris accumulation that plagues other roof types.
Does Interlock Metal Roofing serve Old Town directly?
Yes. Interlock Metal Roofing has served the Cook County region since 2001, offering both expertise and local accountability. The installer can assess your existing roof, discuss profile and color options (Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile, or Standing Seam), and handle the installation process from permit to completion. Local installation also simplifies warranty service and any future maintenance needs. The company's 20+ years of regional experience means familiarity with Old Town's specific weather patterns—roughly 73 cm of annual snow, 1024 mm rain, and wind gusts to 95 km/h—and how those conditions interact with different roof profiles and colors. Request a consultation to discuss your home's architecture, climate exposure, and performance goals.
Is a metal roof better for the environment than asphalt shingles?
Yes. Interlock panels are approximately 95% recyclable aluminum, whereas asphalt shingles from tear-offs end up in landfills. Old Town homeowners who replace asphalt every 15–20 years generate multiple tons of roofing waste over a lifetime. A single Interlock installation lasting 50+ years eliminates that disposal cycle entirely. When the roof eventually reaches end-of-life, the aluminum can be recycled into new panels, automotive parts, or other products—preserving material value rather than consuming landfill space. The lightweight design also reduces transportation energy compared to slate or tile alternatives. The Guardian Warranty's 50-year transferable term means the same roof serves two owners, further extending the lifecycle and reducing embodied carbon per year of use.
Is a metal roof a good choice for Old Town’s climate?
Yes. Old Town averages about 73 cm of snow, 1024 mm of rain, roughly 69 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 95 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
