Review: April 12, 2026Completion: May 30, 2016

We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!

Very heavy investment, but worth every cent! I worked with John and he was very mindful in planning everything out- especially the finer details of what was needed for the house and for the project. His crew was spectacular in their workmanship and friendliness. The only minor issue I had was the scheduling of the project- which is of nobody's fault. Things get done when they get done and those who are waiting, will be happy they waited. Not exaggerating, many customers will be quite pleased with the end result. I'm one of them. Many thanks, John, crew & Interlock!

Not only was the sales process easy, the installation guys were very respectful of my neighbors and my comfort while they were working. Now that it’s done I absolutely love the roof. It’s already made a huge difference in my electric use for cooling the house!

Review: May 8, 2024Completion: April 29, 2024

We are so proud of our new roof. It is so cool looking, it adds a great deal to the curb-appeal of our house. I also appreciate the security of knowing I'll never have to replace it or worry about it in even the strongest winds. I used to lose shingles in strong windstorms. Interlock was easy to work with. The workers were very respectful of my property and were meticulous about clean up after.

Review: November 30, 2023Completion: October 31, 2023

This project has been a roller coaster: First they were doing a good job, then not, then they assured us of the results and things looked good until we questioned something and they completely dropped the ball. They took our money and never followed up. Communication by Allen Gessell seems to be the weak link. He was horrible and ghosted us. It is a HUGE SHAME that what could have been a wonderful situation has become a fearful nightmare!

I'm really excited and pleased with the roof. I love everything about it in terms of color, style, and installation. Everything was done to our utmost satisfaction. Interlock Roofing could have improved the price. The price was expensive. It was a fantastic experience.

The entire team (from sales to installation) was very clear regarding the timeline and next steps for the entire project. The end product looks great and is a vast improvement compared to the appearance of our prior roof. Good clear communication. No issues on my end.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in River North

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in River North, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in River North.

Will a metal roof survive Chicago's freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or warping?

Yes—aluminum's crystalline structure expands and contracts uniformly without damage, unlike asphalt or wood that crack under repeated freeze-thaw stress. River North experiences about 69 freeze-thaw days per year, a significant challenge for brittle materials. Interlock's roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) is engineered for exactly this cycling. The four-way interlocking design accommodates movement while maintaining the seal, and the Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating (warranted 30 years) won't peel or blister as temperatures swing. Your metal roof will still be performing in 50 years; most asphalt roofs fail in 15–20.

Why can't aluminum roofs rust like steel, and does that matter in the Chicago area?

Aluminum contains no iron—the element that oxidizes and rusts. Instead, aluminum naturally forms a microscopically thin oxide layer that self-heals when scratched, providing permanent corrosion immunity. Cook County's 1024 mm annual rainfall and occasional road-salt exposure from winter maintenance are common triggers for rust in steel roofing, but pose zero risk to Interlock panels. The Alunar coating applied to both sides of each panel (even the underside) adds a second protection layer, which is why Interlock installations have survived Antarctic research stations and coastal salt-air homes for over 25 years. With aluminum, corrosion simply isn't a maintenance cost.

How does a metal roof handle River North's annual snow load and ice dams?

Metal roofs shed snow faster than asphalt because their smooth finish and thermal properties (Interlock's energy-efficiency colors reflect solar heat with emissivity up to 0.84) warm slightly in sunlight, reducing ice adhesion. River North receives about 73 cm of snow yearly, requiring a roof that sheds reliably. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels are engineered to manage the weight—Interlock's Slate profile, for example, installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft, so even heavy snow loads won't stress your structure. Snow guards can be added if you prefer controlled release. The lightweight design and reflective finish together minimize the conditions that create ice dams: trapped meltwater refreezes at the unheated overhang. You get safer gutters and fewer winter callbacks.

Do I need to reinforce my roof structure to install metal roofing?

No. Interlock's aluminum panels are extraordinarily light—the Slate profile weighs 0.41 lb/sq ft, and even the Mediterranean Tile (the densest profile) is about 96% lighter than real concrete or clay tile. Most homes are already over-engineered for asphalt shingles; a metal roof is lighter. This means Interlock installs directly over your existing roof in nearly all cases, eliminating the cost and waste of tear-off. In River North's climate, where annual rainfall averages 1024 mm and freeze-thaw cycles are frequent, avoiding structural disruption also reduces the risk of water intrusion during installation. The lightweight design lets you upgrade your roof's durability without contractor fees for structural work or engineering consultations—a significant financial advantage.

Does a metal roof stand up to hail, and can it lower my homeowners insurance?

Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 means your roof has withstood the toughest impact testing on the market. Many insurers recognize this durability and offer premium discounts for Class 4-rated roofs because claims are rare. River North's typical wind gusts reach 95 km/h, which drive hail at high speeds; a Class 4 roof stops damage that would dent or puncture asphalt. Contact your insurer with Interlock's UL listing (Intertek 33876) to see what discount applies—some homeowners recoup years of premium savings. Even without a discount, the fact that your roof won't suffer impact damage translates to zero deductible claims and peace of mind during spring storms.

Can a metal roof withstand Chicago-area wind and gust events?

Interlock metal roofing is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Cook County's typical daily-maximum winds average 25 km/h, with gusts reaching 95 km/h—well within that tolerance. The four-way interlocking design is the key: each panel locks to its neighbors on all four sides, distributing wind load across the entire roof assembly instead of relying on fasteners alone. This mechanical interlock prevents uplift and flutter during severe weather. Your roof will remain secure in the spring and autumn storms common to the region, and the warranty backs that performance. Asphalt shingles, by contrast, fail first at corners and edges where wind finds a loose edge—interlock design prevents that failure mode entirely.

How long does it take to install a metal roof, and will I have to replace my old roof?

Installation typically takes 2–5 days depending on home size and complexity; most River North homes can be completed in a long weekend. Best of all, Interlock installs directly over your existing asphalt roof in the vast majority of cases—no tear-off needed. Because Interlock's panels are so light (the Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft), they won't overload your structure even on top of old shingles. Skipping tear-off saves money, time, and waste. The existing roof becomes an additional insulation and moisture barrier; your home stays weathertight throughout the install. Our local installer has served the region since 2001 and manages the logistics to minimize disruption. You avoid the landfill impact of traditional roofing removal and the dust and debris that plague multi-week projects—another reason many River North homeowners choose an over-existing-roof installation.

Is a metal roof better for the environment than asphalt shingles?

Interlock aluminum roofing is approximately 95% recyclable, and at end-of-life, the panels are worth salvage. Most asphalt roofs end up in landfills—an estimated 11 million tons per year in North America alone—and won't decompose for centuries. Interlock's over-existing-roof installation eliminates the tear-off cycle entirely, further reducing landfill burden. Your roof will likely outlast your ownership (the Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited for you, transferable for 50 years to the next owner), so recycling happens decades away. Meanwhile, the aluminum industry recycles aggressively because the metal retains its value. By choosing Interlock, you avoid multiple generations of asphalt tear-offs on the same home, make a single lifetime material choice, and ensure the panels themselves re-enter the recycling loop at end-of-life. River North's emphasis on sustainable urban living aligns with metal roofing's circular-economy model.

How much maintenance does a metal roof really need compared to asphalt or wood?

Interlock metal roofing is virtually maintenance-free—no patching, no re-coating, no seasonal inspections. Asphalt shingles require annual inspections for moss, debris, curling, and granule loss; wood roofs demand annual treatment to prevent rot and splitting; tile must be pressure-washed and re-sealed. Aluminum never rots, splits, curls, or loses its protective coating. River North's 1024 mm annual rainfall and 73 cm of snow mean leaves and debris collect, but they simply blow off a smooth metal surface; gutters handle runoff as designed. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214 measured), so you won't repaint or seal. Most of your maintenance budget disappears—a significant quality-of-life benefit, especially over decades. The Guardian Warranty covers splits, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance, so your only responsibility is keeping gutters clear.

Is metal roofing more expensive than asphalt, and is it worth it over the roof's lifetime?

Metal roofing carries a higher upfront cost—typically 2–3 times asphalt—but the lifetime math is compelling. An asphalt roof lasts 15–20 years and then must be replaced; most homeowners re-roof 3–4 times in a 60-year period. Interlock's Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited for you and transferable for 50 years to the next owner, meaning one installation likely serves multiple generations. Add no maintenance (asphalt requires annual inspections and repairs), no re-coating, no tear-off disposal costs, and potential insurance discounts for the UL 2218 Class 4 rating. Over 60 years, you save tens of thousands in labor and materials. River North's 69 annual freeze-thaw cycles accelerate asphalt failure; metal's durability under cycling stress justifies the premium. When you sell, the transferable warranty and aesthetic appeal (five profile options: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile, Standing Seam) add resale value that asphalt cannot. The first roof becomes the only roof.

Is a metal roof a good choice for River North’s climate?

Yes. River North averages about 73 cm of snow, 1024 mm of rain, roughly 69 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 95 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
