Interlock Metal Roofing is an amazing company to do business with. My salesperson John was professional and knowledgeable. It is a big investment, but absolutely worth it. The installation crew was on time, hardworking and conscientious. I highly recommend this company to anyone who wants a roof to last 100 years!

The materials were delivered on time but we had to help the person navigate materials to our yard and we unloaded the materials from the pallet.

Review: September 12, 2022Completion: August 8, 2022

I am extremely satisfied with the product. They did a fine job. I can not come up with anything they need to change. I am very satisfied, and the neighbors say they have roof envy.

Review: January 10, 2022Completion: December 22, 2021

Interlock was the only roofing company that took my request seriously. Another metal roofing company, whom I will not mention, basically dismissed my initial inquiry as not worth their time. They need to follow up with the customer confirming the start date, and/or informing them when there is a delay. I called several times with no response. I eventually, contacted John to get some answers, as the office scheduler could not be reached, as well as the field project manager. I believe that diligent follow-up and follow-thru communication is key to keeping the customer informed and prepared especially should their be a delay in the project. This is what makes businesses strive and be successful.

Review: September 14, 2021Completion: September 7, 2021

Overall the process from start to finish was pretty smooth and the main thing is, we ended up with a fantastic new roof that should last for years. Clarification of non-standard items such as gutter removal and replacement for all types of roof and skylights between salesperson and installation crew as what is promised is not always deliverable.

I very pleased with the product and pleased with the install. They did a good job. They did a better job than what I was expecting. The put the original flashing on, and I requested they put the flashing on that came with the roof, and they did. It looks much better. It was nice of them to change it for me. I was very pleased. It is what I wanted and I was lucky I found them.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Near West Side

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Near West Side, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Near West Side.

Will a metal roof handle Chicago's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes—aluminum's non-porous structure makes it inherently resistant to freeze-thaw damage. Near West Side experiences about 69 freeze-thaw days annually, which causes asphalt and wood to crack and curl as they absorb moisture and expand. Aluminum contains no wood fiber or porous binder, so it neither absorbs water nor expands when frozen. The 3105-H24 aluminum alloy used in Interlock panels maintains its integrity through repeated temperature swings, and the Alunar PVDF coating (warranted 30 years) prevents any moisture penetration that could weaken seams or fasteners.

How do metal roofs perform under heavy snow loads in Illinois?

Metal roofs excel in snowy climates because their weight doesn't create structural risk. Near West Side receives about 73 cm of snow annually, but Interlock's Shake profile weighs only 0.58 lb/sq ft—96% lighter than concrete tile—so most homes need no structural reinforcement. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels resist the stress and movement that freeze-thaw cycling causes. Unlike asphalt shingles that curl under snow weight, aluminum maintains its seal. Snow slides off smooth profiles easily; textured ones like Shake and Cedar Shingle provide secure footing if roof access is needed for maintenance.

Can a metal roof withstand Near West Side wind gusts?

Interlock metal roofing is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph, well above the typical gusts (to about 95 km/h or 59 mph) recorded in Cook County. The four-way interlocking panels lock together mechanically, not relying on adhesive alone; this creates a unified structure that flexes rather than tears. Each panel's edges interlock with its neighbors on four sides, distributing wind pressure across the entire roof assembly. Proper installation to the ESR-1790 specification ensures fastening meets current IBC and IRC code. This design makes metal roofing particularly reliable during the spring and fall wind events common to the region.

Will a metal roof leak in the heavy rain we get in Illinois?

The four-way mechanical interlock and correct flashing prevent leaks even in heavy rain. Near West Side receives about 1024 mm of rain annually, distributed across roughly 130 rain days. Metal roofing doesn't absorb water the way asphalt does; water runs off or drains through the standing seam or shingle lap, then exits through gutters or underlayment. The overlapping design of each profile—Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle, Tile, or Standing Seam—channels water downward. Installation of metal flashing at valleys, penetrations, and eaves following ESR-1790 protocol is critical. When installed to spec by a qualified installer, metal roofs outperform asphalt in high-rainfall conditions because they have no granules that wash away or seams that deteriorate.

Can hail damage my metal roof, and will insurance cover it?

Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Most Midwest insurance carriers offer discounts for Class 4-rated roofs because they resist damage that would destroy asphalt shingles. Aluminum's strength-to-weight ratio means it dents less easily than steel; any minor dents do not compromise the seal or structural integrity. With about 3094 sunshine hours per year in Cook County, hail events are infrequent but real; the Class 4 rating gives you protection and documentation that can lower your premium. Ask your agent whether your policy offers a hail discount for this roof class.

Why doesn't aluminum rust like steel roofing does?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—rust is iron oxide, chemically impossible in pure aluminum. Instead, aluminum develops a microscopically thin, self-healing oxide layer when exposed to air. If that layer is scratched, it reforms within hours. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) and applies Alunar PVDF fluorocarbon finish to both sides of every panel for extra protection in damp climates. Near West Side's approximately 1024 mm annual rainfall and variable humidity won't corrode aluminum the way salt air or acid rain corrodes steel. Steel requires constant paint maintenance; aluminum's oxide layer works passively, year after year.

Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof?

No structural reinforcement is required for most homes, thanks to aluminum's extraordinary lightness. The Mediterranean Tile profile, which replicates the look of heavy ceramic tile, weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft—roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. You can install metal roofing over most existing asphalt roofs without removing them, saving labor and landfill burden. This weight advantage matters in Chicago's climate: less dead load means less stress during freeze-thaw cycles and wind gusts (up to 95 km/h typical). A structural engineer can confirm your home's capacity in minutes. For nearly all residential and light commercial buildings, Interlock installs without reinforcement, making the retrofit faster and more affordable than slate, tile, or standing seam steel.

How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or tile?

Metal roofing requires minimal maintenance—typically just gutter cleaning and occasional debris removal. Asphalt shingles degrade from UV exposure and temperature cycling, requiring inspection every few years and seal-coat treatments; after 15–20 years they cup, crack, and need replacement. Wood shakes rot and split in wet climates; Near West Side's 69 annual freeze-thaw days accelerate this. Ceramic tile cracks under freeze-thaw stress and requires mortar repointing. Aluminum never rots, never needs recoating, and resists the cracking that freeze-thaw causes in porous materials. Interlock's Alunar PVDF finish (warranted 30 years against chalking and fading) requires no touch-up. The CALGreen standard recognizes metal roofing's reduced-maintenance profile. You'll spend less on ladders, inspections, and repairs over the roof's lifetime.

Do metal roofs help lower cooling costs in summer?

Yes, reflective metal roofing reduces heat absorption and can lower cooling costs. energy-efficient Interlock colors achieve thermal emissivity of 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny), meaning they bounce back the sun's heat instead of absorbing it the way dark asphalt does. The Cool Roof Rating Council rates Interlock's reflective profiles. Near West Side receives about 3094 sunshine hours annually; reflective coatings meaningfully reduce the solar heat that penetrates your attic and raises air-conditioning load. The lighter colors also stay cooler to the touch, reducing thermal stress on fasteners and seams. Over a 50-year roof life, energy savings compound. Metal also conducts heat away from the panel surface, unlike shingles that trap it.

How long does it take to install a metal roof in Chicago?

Installation timelines depend on roof size and weather, but metal roofing typically installs faster than asphalt because panels cover more area per unit and fastening is straightforward. A qualified installer familiar with ESR-1790 protocol can complete most residential roofs in 2–5 days. Unlike asphalt tear-off, you can often install metal directly over your existing roof, eliminating disposal delays and cost. Near West Side's variable spring and fall weather (wind gusts to 95 km/h, rain, and freeze-thaw days reaching 69 per year) can affect scheduling, but the lightweight panels are easier to handle in gusty conditions than heavy slate or tile. Interlock Metal Roofing has served the region since 2001 and understands local permitting, labor availability, and seasonal windows. Request a site visit to get a binding timeline estimate.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Near West Side’s climate?

Yes. Near West Side averages about 73 cm of snow, 1024 mm of rain, roughly 69 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 95 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
