Review: April 12, 2026Completion: May 30, 2016

We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!

Review: April 3, 2025Completion: July 31, 2024

Very heavy investment, but worth every cent! I worked with John and he was very mindful in planning everything out- especially the finer details of what was needed for the house and for the project. His crew was spectacular in their workmanship and friendliness. The only minor issue I had was the scheduling of the project- which is of nobody's fault. Things get done when they get done and those who are waiting, will be happy they waited. Not exaggerating, many customers will be quite pleased with the end result. I'm one of them. Many thanks, John, crew & Interlock!

Not only was the sales process easy, the installation guys were very respectful of my neighbors and my comfort while they were working. Now that it’s done I absolutely love the roof. It’s already made a huge difference in my electric use for cooling the house!

Review: May 8, 2024Completion: April 29, 2024

We are so proud of our new roof. It is so cool looking, it adds a great deal to the curb-appeal of our house. I also appreciate the security of knowing I'll never have to replace it or worry about it in even the strongest winds. I used to lose shingles in strong windstorms. Interlock was easy to work with. The workers were very respectful of my property and were meticulous about clean up after.

Review: November 30, 2023Completion: October 31, 2023

This project has been a roller coaster: First they were doing a good job, then not, then they assured us of the results and things looked good until we questioned something and they completely dropped the ball. They took our money and never followed up. Communication by Allen Gessell seems to be the weak link. He was horrible and ghosted us. It is a HUGE SHAME that what could have been a wonderful situation has become a fearful nightmare!

I'm really excited and pleased with the roof. I love everything about it in terms of color, style, and installation. Everything was done to our utmost satisfaction. Interlock Roofing could have improved the price. The price was expensive. It was a fantastic experience.

The entire team (from sales to installation) was very clear regarding the timeline and next steps for the entire project. The end product looks great and is a vast improvement compared to the appearance of our prior roof. Good clear communication. No issues on my end.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in South Shore

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in South Shore, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in South Shore.

Can I get a metal roof that looks like slate, cedar shake, or tile without the weight?

Yes. Interlock offers five profiles—Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Standing Seam, and Mediterranean Tile—each molded to match traditional materials in appearance. The Tile profile weighs about 0.59 lb/sq ft, roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile, so your home's frame needs no structural upgrades. All profiles use the same roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy with a 30-year Alunar® PVDF coating on both sides. In South Shore's 1024 mm annual rainfall and 73 cm snow, the lighter weight means faster installation and no hidden reinforcement costs.

Is a metal roof really cheaper than asphalt over 30 or 40 years?

Metal is the last roof you buy—asphalt typically needs replacement every 15–20 years. Interlock's Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited and non-prorated for the original owner, then one-time transferable for 50 years to the next owner, covering rust, rot, splitting, and impact loss. Over four decades in South Shore's climate—with roughly 73 cm snow, 1024 mm rain, and 69 freeze-thaw cycles annually—you'll avoid multiple tear-offs, disposal fees, and labor. That cumulative cost, plus the resale premium, makes aluminum significantly cheaper than the cycle of replacing asphalt twice.

Why can't aluminum rust like steel roofing does?

Aluminum contains no iron, so chemically it cannot rust. Instead, it forms a microscopically thin, self-healing oxide layer when exposed to air. If that layer is scratched—say by a branch or foot traffic—it regenerates within days. Interlock's panels are also coated on both sides with Alunar® 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading per ASTM standards. In Cook County's salt-air exposure and freeze-thaw environment (69 days yearly), steel roofing would corrode from the underside in 10–15 years; aluminum simply doesn't degrade that way.

How does a metal roof handle South Shore's freeze-thaw cycles?

Aluminum's crystalline structure and lack of water absorption make it immune to freeze-thaw damage. With South Shore averaging 69 freeze-thaw days per year and 73 cm of snow, asphalt shingles absorb moisture, swell when frozen, and crack as they thaw—a cycle that degrades them in 15 years. Interlock's roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy experiences thermal expansion but doesn't absorb water or rot. The four-way interlocking panels accommodate movement, and the Alunar® coating (30-year warranted) protects both the top and underside. After 25+ years in this climate, aluminum performs like new while asphalt has failed twice.

Do metal roofs handle heavy snow loads and ice dams in Illinois winters?

Metal roofs shed snow and ice more effectively than asphalt because their smooth surface allows water to flow freely, reducing ice-dam buildup. South Shore receives about 73 cm of snow annually and experiences gusts up to 95 km/h; the four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist winds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to spec, so snow and wind loads are easily managed. The metal panels' light weight—Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft, Shake at 0.58, Tile at 0.59—means you can install snow guards if desired without structural concern. Most Illinois metal roofs shed snow faster than they accumulate it, eliminating the ice-dam damage that plagues asphalt every winter.

Will a metal roof blow off in a South Shore windstorm?

No. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are engineered so each panel locks to its neighbors on all four sides, distributing wind load across the entire roof. The system is warranted to resist sustained winds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed per spec. South Shore's typical gusts reach about 95 km/h with extreme gusts slightly higher, well within the roof's rated capacity. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 (reissued 2025 for IBC/IRC) certifies the interlock design for wind performance. Unlike asphalt, which can lift and tear at corners, or standing-seam single-lock systems, Interlock's four-way design has no weak points where wind can get a grip.

Does hail damage a metal roof, and can I get an insurance discount?

Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. In South Shore's climate, this protection is genuine peace of mind. Many homeowners with metal roofs qualify for homeowners insurance discounts because insurers recognize the durability; contact your agent with the UL 2218 Class 4 rating and the 30-year Alunar® coating specs to verify your policy. Steel or asphalt would require roof inspection and likely premium increases after even modest hail. Aluminum's combination of non-dent engineering and impact warranty eliminates that insurance headache.

How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or tile?

Metal requires far less maintenance than asphalt, wood, or tile. Interlock's roofing-grade aluminum panels shed debris, don't rot, don't curl, and the Alunar® 70% PVDF coating (30-year warranted) resists algae and weathering. Asphalt shingles need moss/algae treatment, crack-filling, and replacement every 15–20 years; tile requires periodic mortar repointing and cracked-piece replacement. In South Shore's 1024 mm annual rain and 73 cm snow, metal simply sheds water without the maintenance burden. CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance needs. Most homeowners clean gutters twice yearly and occasionally wash the roof—that's it. The Guardian Warranty covers rusting, rotting, splitting, and curling, so there's no guesswork about what's your responsibility.

Can you install a metal roof over my existing asphalt shingles?

Yes. The extraordinary light weight of Interlock panels—the Tile profile at about 0.59 lb/sq ft, roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—means installation over most existing asphalt roofs requires no structural reinforcement. The installer inspects the existing deck for soundness, installs underlayment for moisture control, then fastens the metal panels directly over the old shingles. This avoids expensive tear-off labor and landfill fees and is often faster than stripping. South Shore's Interlock Metal Roofing installer, serving the region since 2001, can walk your roof, confirm your deck is suitable, and give you a timeline—typically 2–5 days for a residential home. New deck work, if needed, is also faster with metal because the panels install quickly once prep is done.

Is aluminum roofing better for the environment than asphalt?

Yes. Interlock's roofing-grade aluminum is about 95% recyclable at end of life, and aluminum recycling uses 5% of the energy required to produce new aluminum. Asphalt shingles are not recyclable in most places; South Shore homeowners tear off asphalt every 15–20 years and send it to landfill—multiply that across millions of homes. Interlock panels, installed in 1998 and still performing, have already saved multiple landfill cycles. When your metal roof does eventually retire decades from now, the aluminum will be melted and reused for cans, windows, or new panels. The Guardian Warranty's lifetime coverage for the original owner (plus 50 years transferable) means your roof outlasts typical building occupancy, delaying any recycling date by 40+ years compared to asphalt's replacement cycle.

Is a metal roof a good choice for South Shore’s climate?

Yes. South Shore averages about 73 cm of snow, 1024 mm of rain, roughly 69 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 95 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
