We had vents put on our family room that had no vents and didn't need them because the ceiling inside is directly under the insulated roof. I wish they had asked before they installed the vents. The job was done in the end of December 2016. They left material here on our lawn that would be picked up in spring, which was okay with us. Well, spring came, so we moved the items off the lawn. A strong wind blew the boxes and some of the material around. Again I picked it up and put it just under the roof of a nearby building and called the company. I was told it would be picked up when they were out in our area. The material is still here! Please pick up the leftover material.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Dahlgren

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Dahlgren, Minnesota. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Dahlgren.

How does a metal roof handle Minnesota's snow load and ice dams?

Interlock's four-way interlocking panels shed snow and ice effectively because the smooth aluminum surface offers minimal friction—snow slides off rather than collecting. Dahlgren averages about 95 cm of snow annually over roughly 79 freeze-thaw days, which stresses traditional asphalt through repeated expansion and contraction. Aluminum's non-corrosive properties mean the panel edges and valleys stay structurally sound through endless melt cycles. Optional snow guards can be installed where sliding snow poses a safety concern. The lightweight design—Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft—handles typical Carver County snow loads without requiring structural reinforcement, unlike concrete or clay tile.

Why does aluminum never rust, and why does that matter in Minnesota?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes and corrodes in steel roofing. Instead, aluminum naturally forms a thin oxide layer that actually self-heals when scratched, protecting the metal underneath indefinitely. In Dahlgren's climate, with about 796 mm of annual rainfall and seasonal freeze-thaw stress, this self-healing property prevents the corrosion failures that plague steel roofs over time. Your roof experiences gusts up to 94 km/h and winter weather that would attack vulnerable fasteners and seams on other materials. Interlock panels use roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) plus a two-sided Alunar 70% PVDF coating warranted 30 years, creating a corrosion-proof system that outlasts the home.

Will freeze-thaw cycles damage an aluminum metal roof over time?

No—aluminum actually thrives through freeze-thaw because it doesn't absorb water or expand and contract the way wood, asphalt, or concrete tile do. Dahlgren experiences roughly 79 freeze-thaw days per year, and each cycle stresses materials that hold moisture. Aluminum's non-porous composition means water doesn't penetrate or cause internal damage. The two-sided Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish (applied to both sides during manufacturing) adds another barrier against moisture infiltration. Over decades of Minnesota winters, asphalt shingles crack and curl from this stress; aluminum panels remain dimensionally stable. Combined with a solid deck and underlayment, Interlock roofs rated to the 2025 ICC-ES ESR-1790 standard continue performing without degradation long after competitor materials fail.

Can a metal roof withstand Minnesota wind and ice storms?

Yes—Interlock panels are warranted to resist sustained wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h), well above Dahlgren's typical gusts of 94 km/h. The four-way interlocking design locks each panel to its neighbors on all sides, creating a unified system that won't lift, separate, or fail in severe weather. A single panel cannot come loose independently; the entire array must move together, which requires forces far exceeding what Minnesota storms produce. The lightweight construction (Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft) actually reduces the wind-load stress on your structure compared to traditional tile, yet the interlock strength proves superior to asphalt or wood shingles. When installed to specification, this system provides the structural security you need through Carver County's seasonal storms.

How does a metal roof perform in hail, and might insurance rates drop?

Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and is specifically warranted against perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 means the panels withstand repeated impacts from ice balls significantly larger than typical Minnesota hail. Many insurance companies recognize this non-combustible, impact-resistant design and offer premium discounts that recover installation costs over time. Unlike asphalt shingles, which dent and lose granules in hail, aluminum panels bounce back without aesthetic or functional damage. The Guardian warranty covers impact resistance for the original owner's lifetime, eliminating the worry of hidden storm damage degrading your coverage. Contact your insurer about specific discounts; metal roofing's durability has increasingly convinced underwriters to reward homeowners who choose it.

Does an aluminum metal roof actually reduce energy costs in Minnesota?

Interlock's energy-efficient colors reflect solar heat rather than absorbing it the way dark asphalt does, reducing cooling costs year-round. The Aged Copper Penny color achieves initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84, meaning it bounces sunlight away while still releasing absorbed heat efficiently. Dahlgren receives about 3,128 sunshine hours annually, so a reflective roof makes a measurable difference in summer cooling loads. Aluminum's thermal conductivity also means interior heat escapes more readily in winter if ventilation is managed properly—a trade-off offset by the reflective benefit. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating confirms the energy savings compared to asphalt. Over a roof's 50+ year lifespan, these energy-efficiency benefits compound into significant utility savings, especially as air conditioning demands rise during Minnesota's warmer months.

What maintenance does a metal roof require compared to asphalt or wood?

Aluminum metal roofing requires significantly less maintenance than asphalt, wood shake, or clay tile. Asphalt shingles need granule replacement, moss treatment, and frequent repairs after Minnesota's 79 annual freeze-thaw cycles and 796 mm of rainfall. Wood shake requires staining, splitting repair, and constant vigilance against rot. Aluminum panels never rot, never split, never need sealing or coating renewal—the factory-applied two-sided Alunar 70% PVDF finish is warranted 30 years against fading. Your only maintenance is occasional gutter cleaning and debris removal, the same as any roof. The CALGreen-verified design specifically recognizes reduced maintenance burden. Over a 50-year lifespan, you'll spend a fraction of what asphalt or wood demand, freeing time and money for other home improvements.

Will my home's structure need reinforcement for a metal roof?

No—Interlock panels are so lightweight that structural reinforcement is almost never necessary. The Mediterranean Tile profile weighs roughly 0.59 lb/sq ft, about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile, yet delivers the same aesthetic. Even the heavier profiles (Shake at 0.58 lb/sq ft) place less load on your framing than traditional materials. Dahlgren homes with standard rafter spacing can accept Interlock panels without modification. The lightweight design also means the roof can be installed over most existing asphalt shingles, avoiding the tear-off cost and landfill impact. A structural engineer can confirm your specific situation in minutes; in most cases, the answer is straightforward: install and save. This efficiency—beauty without reinforcement—makes metal roofing practical where slate, tile, or heavy wood would require expensive frame upgrades.

Is a metal roof a smart financial investment over 30 or 50 years?

Yes—Interlock metal roofing costs more upfront than asphalt but becomes the cheapest roof over its lifetime because you install it once. Asphalt shingles last 15-20 years in Minnesota's freeze-thaw climate; you'll replace them 2-3 times over 50 years, plus recurring maintenance, repairs, and tear-off disposal costs. Aluminum panels are warranted for the original owner's lifetime with a non-prorated material guarantee covering rusting, cracking, curling, and impact damage. If you sell, the warranty transfers to the next owner for 50 years from completion—rare among roofing products. Factor in zero maintenance costs, potential insurance discounts from the UL 2218 Class 4 rating, and energy savings from energy-efficiency reflectance, and the total cost of ownership strongly favors metal. It's the last roof you'll need to buy, which homeowners in Carver County increasingly recognize as genuine value.

How long does installation take, and can it go over my existing roof?

Installation typically takes 2-5 days depending on roof size and complexity, much faster than asphalt tear-off and replacement. Interlock panels can install directly over existing asphalt shingles (up to two layers per code) using a nailer and fastening pattern specified in ESR-1790—no destructive tear-off required. This saves thousands in labor and disposal fees and keeps roofing waste out of Minnesota landfills. The four-way interlocking design simplifies installation; panels lock as they're laid, creating a unified weathertight system immediately. Flashing, trim, and detail work follow standard roofing practices. Your local Interlock installer has served Carver County since 2001 and understands regional building codes, snow load requirements, and the freeze-thaw challenges specific to Dahlgren. Once installed to spec, the roof is immediately functional—no curing time, no weather delays waiting for sealant to set.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Dahlgren’s climate?

Yes. Dahlgren averages about 95 cm of snow, 796 mm of rain, roughly 79 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 94 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
