I found some nails and pieces of shingles and metal in my back yard even after expressing the need to have it well cleaned due to the dogs play and potty in the backyard we are very happy with the way our home looks with the interlock roof. People have came down our street asking who did the roof.

I think that the installers were phenomenal. Interlock Roofing could improve by keeping the clients more up to date. I had to call numerous times to check on start date.

Review: October 25, 2022Completion: September 26, 2022

Be sure to have a penalty for exceeding time limits. They could improve on communication and adherence to the contract period of installation. The product is great and the installers were fabulous. Feedback for #1: The management was very bad, but the roof looks very good and it is rated very highly, so I was able to get a reduction in my insurance. Additional Comments: Other than being ambivalent on the fact it took so long to get it done, we checked out the product, so we felt it was a good product. One thing that would have done a lot more, is to actually do emails or put it in writing so the customer actually knows what is going on during that period of expected service. I would have been more than willing to wait longer on the issue but because they were already exceeding the contract by the time I had to contact someone else to intervene, I have to say kudos to the interventionist.

From the start to finish, we loved their work and communication. There were no nails, metal bits, or excessive noise. They listened to all questions and addressed our concerns. They were careful to make no promise of a start date that they could not fulfill. The rain this year made it hard to predict! I would do a commercial for them free to endorse their work and product!

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Sunrise

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Sunrise, Minnesota. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Sunrise.

How does a metal roof handle Minnesota snow and ice buildup in Sunrise?

Aluminum's smooth, hard surface sheds snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt, reducing ice dam risk during Sunrise's typical 92 cm annual snowfall and 83 freeze-thaw cycles per year. The four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist wind gusts up to 120 mph, so heavy snow loads won't shift them. Metal roofs also reflect rather than absorb heat, which helps prevent the freeze-thaw damage that splits asphalt shingles. Snow guards are available if you want to manage runoff strategically.

Why does freeze-thaw cycling damage asphalt roofs more than metal?

Asphalt absorbs water into its granules and substrate; when Sunrise's 83 annual freeze-thaw days cycle, that trapped moisture expands and contracts, cracking and curling the shingles from within. Aluminum cannot absorb water and its oxide layer self-heals when scratched, so freeze-thaw cycles don't degrade it. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating resists chalking and fading for 30 years even under this relentless cycling, while asphalt typically fails in 15–20 years here.

Is a metal roof immune to rust, or will Minnesota winters eventually corrode it?

Aluminum roofing is genuinely immune to rust because aluminum contains no iron—rust is iron oxide, and iron simply isn't present in the material. Even when scratched, aluminum instantly forms a self-healing oxide layer that protects it from further corrosion. The Alunar finish, a 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating applied to both sides, adds another 30-year durability barrier against the elements. With about 778 mm of annual rain and freeze-thaw cycling, this dual protection makes aluminum far more durable than steel roofing, which does rust.

Can a metal roof stay secure during Minnesota windstorms and winter gusts?

Yes. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are engineered to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph and carry that warranty when installed to specification. Sunrise's typical wind gusts reach 100 km/h (62 mph), well within the panel's rated capacity. The interlocking design means each panel grips its neighbors on all four sides, distributing force across the entire roof rather than relying on fasteners alone. This is why the product earned ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 for wind resistance under modern building codes.

What's the hail rating on metal roofing, and could it lower my insurance cost?

Interlock aluminum roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurers recognize this durability and offer discounts on homes with Class 4-rated metal roofs. Over a 25- or 30-year span, those discounts compound significantly compared to asphalt shingles, which require replacement after major hail. Check with your insurer about quotes before and after installation; the savings often help offset the roofing cost.

Do I need to reinforce my house framing for a metal tile roof?

No. Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile weighs about 0.59 lb/sq ft—roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—so no structural reinforcement is needed. The Shake profile is about 0.58 lb/sq ft and the Slate about 0.41 lb/sq ft. Most homes can support metal tile directly over existing asphalt without any framing upgrades, which saves thousands in labor. This lightweight advantage is particularly valuable in Sunrise's climate, where heavy snow (about 92 cm per year) would add stress to a reinforced structure anyway.

How much work does maintaining a metal roof take compared to asphalt or tile?

Interlock aluminum requires minimal maintenance: occasional gutter cleaning and inspections. Asphalt shingles need frequent repairs from splitting, curling, and granule loss during Sunrise's 83 freeze-thaw cycles per year. Wood shakes split and rot when moisture penetrates; clay and concrete tiles crack and need re-pointing. Aluminum won't split, rot, or crack. The Alunar coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading, so repainting—required for tile and some metal finishes—isn't necessary. Over 40 years, the labor and material savings are substantial.

Is metal roofing really more eco-friendly than asphalt shingles?

Yes, fundamentally. Metal roofing is roughly 95% recyclable at end-of-life; aluminum has a proven recycling market and retains value as scrap. Asphalt shingles end up in landfills by the millions of tons annually—the tear-off alone generates waste that takes decades to break down. Over a 40-year lifespan, you'll replace asphalt 2–3 times in Sunrise's freeze-thaw climate, each time sending shingles to landfill. With metal, one installation handles it. Interlock's aluminum is also CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance impact, which Minnesota's building standards increasingly recognize.

Is there a local metal roofing installer serving Sunrise, Minnesota?

Yes. Interlock Metal Roofing has served the Ramsey County region since 2001 and understands the specific demands of Minnesota winters—heavy snow, frequent freeze-thaw cycles, and intense UV exposure from about 3,113 annual sunshine hours. Our team is trained on the complete Interlock portfolio: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Standing Seam, and Mediterranean Tile profiles, all backed by the Guardian lifetime limited warranty. Call for a site visit to discuss which profile matches your home's style and your roof's structural capacity.

What's the installation process for metal roofing, and can it go over my existing shingles?

Interlock panels install over a solid roof deck with underlayment, which takes 3–5 days for most residential homes. Yes, installation often proceeds over existing asphalt shingles—no expensive tear-off—as long as the deck is sound and not excessively layered. The four-way interlocking design makes fastening fast and precise. Underlayment and proper ventilation ensure the roof stays moisture-free despite Sunrise's 778 mm annual rainfall. Our local team schedules around weather; Minnesota spring and fall windows are ideal. A site assessment determines timeline and cost before work begins.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Sunrise’s climate?

Yes. Sunrise averages about 92 cm of snow, 778 mm of rain, roughly 83 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 100 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
