Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Otis, Oregon
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |

What our customers are saying:
After considering several different types of roofs and several different roofing companies for our house on the Oregon coast, we settled on Interlock Metal Roofing. We were not disappointed. Although it took about 8 months for the installation to happen due to weather, crew availability, and supply chain issues, it was worth the wait. The roof is beautiful and will last for many, many years. In addition, having the company that makes the roofing materials do the installation means that you have expert people installing the roof backed by expert people who know the product. We went with the Interlock Slate roof in black. It's stunning! Along with durability, the roof dresses up an otherwise plain house. An Interlock Metal Roof is not inexpensive. The cost can be a bit of a shock at first. But it's well worth the money. Positive, Responsiveness, Quality, Professionalism, Services: Roof installation
Scheduling the installation was a real bear; it kept getting delayed. Ultimately, it took 9 months from when we put our deposit down to when the roof was installed. That said, the installers were top-notch. They were quick, clean, polite, and answered all our questions. We absolutely love the roof and the two solar tubes they installed. Our neighbors all rave about how nice the house looks. They can't believe it is a metal roof. (We had the metal "cedar shake" style installed in charcoal gray.) I would definitely recommend them, but be patient with scheduling.PositiveQuality, ProfessionalismServicesAttic venting repairs, Roof installation, Skylight installation
Interlock installed a roof at our Tigard home in 2004 and it still looks brand new. When it was time to replace our Lincoln City house's roof at the beach, we did not hesitate to call them again. They work so hard to please and both roofs are beautiful.
We cannot begin to tell you how thoroughly satisfied we are, with not only our beautiful new slate roof, but every employee we had interaction with from start to finish.Mike and Damon were our first introduction to this company. They were polite, professional, informative and thorough in their presentation.Next we had several (over the phone) encounters with May. She worked diligently and professionally in getting our job scheduled between the time frame we needed. Now come the installers, Peter and Victor. These brothers are hard working, VERY knowledgeable, professional men with the highest of integrity. They started the job late (after coming from another job some distance away) the first evening, worked until dark. They returned the next morning, early, and put in 12 hours of work. (Again until just before dark)Came back and did an amazing job cleaning up everything! This is a quality product and a quality installation from a quality company we would recommend at any time.Thank you Interlock Industries, Inc. You have given these satisfied customers piece of mind in knowing we have a beautiful, lifetime roof.PositiveResponsiveness, Punctuality, Quality, Professionalism, ValueServicesRoof installation
I live in a forest near the Oregon Coast. The original reason I wanted to purchase a metal roof was basically for fire prevention. Composition shingles are the worst type of roof you can have when living in a forested area; metal roofs are the best. On September 11, 1992 I was on the island of Kauai, Hawaii when Hurricane Iniki, a Category-5 hurricane, took a direct hit. For our emergency shelter, we took refuge at the newly built Kauai Community College. We were told it had been built to hurricane standards and was safe. The college had a metal roof made of long slates stretching from the top to bottom. As the hurricane grew in strength, I watched the " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate at one side of the building starting to flap…then flap more and more until it went flying into the air. Then, I watched the slate next to it do the same. This went on and on. When the eye of the hurricane went over us and everything slowed down, the people in that building rushed over to our building. For some reason our building’s roof held. Living on the Oregon Coast we get high winds every year. When I was informed about how the Interlock roof is tied together, I was sold on purchasing that style. Now, my roof can withstand up to a 180 per hour wind gust. I also like it’s look. After it was installed I sent a photo to a friend and her reaction was: “I thought you were going to buy a metal roof.” The roof even has a slate look to it. I used to own a business where we sent installation crews all across the country to install our multiple-run kennels. I know the importance of having a crew that knows what they are doing and are good representatives of our business. I give the Interlock installation crew an A+. They not only know what they are doing, but they are HARD WORKERS as well. On my job they went way beyond just roofing my house. They tore out the dilapidated structure around my chimney and built me a completely new one. They also added new flashing at the bottom of my roof windows, so I no longer have a problem with runoff ruining my wooden frame. I now have a new roof that will last much longer than me. It has added value to my home and peace of mind to me. When considering a new roof, I highly recommend Interlock.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Otis
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Otis, Oregon. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Otis.
How does a metal roof handle heavy snow in Otis, Oregon?
Metal roofs shed snow and ice more efficiently than asphalt because the smooth, hard surface offers less friction and no thermal mass to trap melt cycles. Otis receives about 32 cm of snow annually and experiences roughly 8 freeze-thaw days per year—conditions that accelerate asphalt deterioration and ice dam formation. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are ICC-ES certified (ESR-1790) for structural safety under snow load, and the profiles' angles naturally direct water away from vulnerable seams, protecting against the water infiltration that causes damage during your region's repeated thaw cycles.
Why won't an aluminum metal roof rust like steel roofing?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes when exposed to moisture. Instead, aluminum forms an invisible oxide layer that actually self-heals when scratched, making it naturally corrosion-resistant in wet climates. Otis's 1898 mm of annual rainfall and coastal proximity mean salt spray exposure is a real concern; Interlock's 3105-H24 aluminum alloy is roofing-grade and coated with Alunar PVDF fluorocarbon finish on both sides, rated for harsh salt-air environments from coastal homes to Antarctic research stations. This two-sided protection means your roof resists degradation from above and below.
Is a metal roof really cheaper than replacing asphalt shingles every 15 years?
Over a 50-year ownership period, Interlock metal roofing costs less than the four to five asphalt reroof cycles your home would otherwise need. Asphalt shingles typically last 15–20 years in climates like Otis, where 1898 mm annual rainfall and 32 cm snow accelerate granule loss and wood-rot underneath. Interlock's Guardian warranty covers the original owner for life against rust, rot, and material failure—then transfers 50 years to the next owner—eliminating the asphalt tear-off-to-landfill cycle. With current financing (no payments or interest until Spring 2027), plus 10% off installation, the true cost-per-year of ownership becomes significantly lower than repeated asphalt replacements.
Can a metal roof stand up to Otis's coastal wind gusts?
Yes—Interlock metal roofing is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Otis experiences typical daily winds around 23 km/h with gusts documented to 139 km/h, so your roof will have a substantial safety margin. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels lock together on all four edges, distributing wind load across the entire system rather than placing stress on individual fasteners. This design, combined with proper underlayment and fastening to solid decking, ensures your roof stays secure through the region's strongest storms without the fastener fatigue that eventually fails asphalt installations.
Can you install a metal roof over my existing asphalt shingles?
Yes—one of aluminum's biggest advantages is weight. Interlock's Slate profile installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft, and even the Mediterranean Tile profile weighs only 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. This means no structural reinforcement is needed, and the system installs directly over most existing roofs, saving you the cost and disruption of a tear-off. Your local installer, Interlock Metal Roofing (PNW) Inc., has served the region since 1997 and can assess your specific roof structure in minutes. Installation typically takes days rather than weeks, minimizing impact to your home and family.
How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or shake?
Metal requires virtually no maintenance—no algae treatment, no moss removal, no wood rot inspections. Asphalt shingles in Otis's wet climate (1898 mm rain, 32 cm snow annually) develop algae, moss, and granule loss within 10 years and eventually split or curl. Wood shake roofs invite rot, insect damage, and costly repairs in freeze-thaw cycles like your region's 8 annual freeze-thaw days. Interlock aluminum is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance because the smooth surface sheds debris, the non-porous material resists organic growth, and aluminum doesn't degrade from moisture or temperature swings. An occasional gentle rinse is all you'll ever need.
Does a metal roof help lower cooling costs in summer?
energy-efficient Interlock colors reflect heat rather than absorb it—reflectance values reach up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity sits at 0.84, meaning less solar energy enters your home compared to dark asphalt. Otis receives about 3097 sunshine hours annually, and even at this Pacific Northwest latitude, summer heat gain adds up. Reflective coatings reduce the temperature rise in your attic and living spaces, lowering air-conditioning demand and extending compressor life. The Cool Roof Rating Council has verified these performance values, so you're not relying on marketing claims—you're getting independently tested cooling efficiency that asphalt simply cannot match.
What's the hail rating on a metal roof, and can it lower my insurance?
Interlock metal roofing carries the highest hail rating available: UL 2218 Class 4 impact resistance, and the Guardian warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. While Otis's recorded climate data doesn't show frequent hail, severe hailstorms do occur in the Pacific Northwest, and the Class 4 rating gives you peace of mind. Many insurers recognize UL 2218 Class 4 certification and offer premium reductions or discounts for impact-resistant roofing—contact your provider with the certification details. This rating, combined with the non-combustible aluminum material, often qualifies you for additional savings on your homeowner's policy.
Is a metal roof fireproof, and does it affect my insurance?
Interlock aluminum roofing is non-combustible and available with Class A fire classification—the highest rating under building codes. Aluminum cannot catch fire or spread flames, which is why it's installed on Antarctic research stations and high-risk environments. The ICC-ES evaluation report (ESR-1790, reissued 2025) confirms compliance with all IBC and IRC fire codes, so your roof meets—and exceeds—Oregon building requirements. Non-combustible roofing often qualifies for homeowner's insurance discounts and may improve your home's fire safety rating, particularly valuable if your property is near wildland areas. This is peace of mind your asphalt roof simply cannot provide.
What does the lifetime warranty on a metal roof actually cover?
The Guardian lifetime limited warranty for the original owner covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance—essentially every failure mode that affects roofing materials. It's non-prorated, meaning you pay nothing for repairs or replacement under warranty, regardless of how many years have passed. The coating itself carries a separate 30-year warranty against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214 tested). When you sell your home, the warranty transfers once to the next owner for 50 years from completion, making your metal roof a permanent asset that never stops protecting and adds appeal to future buyers. Few roofing products offer this level of owner confidence.
