Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Zigzag, Oregon
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |

What our customers are saying:
I'm thrilled with how my aluminum roof turned out!! Waaayy better than I had imagined. The Interlock team was great to work with. They were very professional and responsive to my needs. I would definitely recommend working with them!!
communicating the start date of the project
The company was very informative and efficient, and we are happy with both the aesthetic and practical results. We are also happy to have a greater sense of security about the danger posed by fire, which has been a worry because we live in a forested area far from emergency services. The workers were polite and professional and cleaned up the site pretty well. It was expensive, but we're very satisfied with the work.
We really liked the product. Damon, the sales guy, was exceptional in explaining everything to us. It was just too much money.
Communication. Setting realistic expectations. Following through on commitments. Overall integrity. Original schedule was an August installation. Old roof was taken off in October and install was not complete until late December. Communications regarding schedule and delays were non-existent and each time I initiated contact and was given new estimated dates the dates were not honored and contact wasn't made.
Communications. Roland would argue with me as far as the way the roof looked. I feel he should not be talking to homeowners. Especially if they feel that something is not right. Things that he stated were fine Ivan fixed. I am just very upset that we were offered nothing as far as a discount. Just frustrating. I just hope parts of the roof don't come off when the high winds start. Didn't even get an apology in any form.
I would have liked the office staff to communicate more about the manufacturing issue. If they had communicated with us, we would have understood the issue.
Everything was done quickly and professionally. We are very well pleased.
A list of do's and don't's for the installers would be beneficial. We had nothing in writing about what needed to be done.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Zigzag
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Zigzag, Oregon. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Zigzag.
How does a metal roof handle Zigzag's heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles?
Aluminum sheds snow cleanly because ice doesn't bond to its smooth, non-porous surface the way it does to asphalt. Zigzag averages about 223 cm of snow annually and roughly 42 freeze-thaw days per year—conditions that crack and curl traditional shingles. The four-way interlocking panels stay rigid through those cycles without splitting because aluminum doesn't absorb moisture or expand unevenly like wood or asphalt. Snow guards are available if you want to manage runoff, but the roof itself won't fail from the load.
With over 1800 mm of rain per year, how does this roof keep water out?
The four-way interlocking aluminum panels overlap mechanically—water can't enter because there's no gap for it to find. Zigzag receives approximately 1834 mm of rain annually, and that volume tests every overlap and seam. Installed to spec over a solid deck with underlayment (just like a premium asphalt install), the interlocks function the same way as a standing-seam metal roof: water sheds downslope into the gutters. The design is verified under ICC-ES ESR-1790 for both IBC and IRC compliance, which includes rain infiltration testing.
Why is an aluminum roof better than steel in a wet, windy climate?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes into rust. Instead, aluminum forms a thin, transparent oxide layer that actually protects the metal underneath. When the surface gets scratched, that oxide layer self-heals in hours. With Zigzag's wind gusts reaching 138 km/h and frequent moisture, this immunity to corrosion matters: a steel roof would begin rusting within years in this climate, but aluminum stays chemically stable for decades. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating on both sides adds 30 years of fade resistance on top of that natural protection.
Does freeze-thaw damage aluminum roofing over time?
No. Aluminum doesn't absorb water, so there's nothing inside the material to freeze and crack it. Wood shingles and asphalt both trap moisture between fibers and granules; when Zigzag's 42 annual freeze-thaw days occur, that water expands, splitting and curling the roof from the inside out. Aluminum stays dimensionally stable through those cycles. The roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) is engineered for exactly this kind of climate stress, which is why Interlock installations work from coastal homes to Antarctic research stations.
Will this roof blow off in Zigzag's wind gusts?
The roof is warranted to resist sustained winds up to 120 mph, and gusts here average 138 km/h (about 86 mph), well within that rating. The four-way interlocking design locks each panel to its neighbors mechanically—you can't peel one up without disconnecting four adjacent ones. Wind pressure actually drives the panels tighter into the interlocks rather than lifting them free. When installed to specification, this system has proven itself through decades of coastal installations where salt-air wind gusts are equally fierce.
Can my existing roof structure handle metal roofing?
Almost certainly yes, because aluminum weighs far less than traditional materials. The Slate profile installs at just 0.41 pounds per square foot; the Tile profile is about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile, so no structural reinforcement is needed. Most homes in Zigzag can accept an aluminum roof directly over the existing asphalt or wood without added framing cost. A structural engineer can verify your specific home in an hour if you want certainty, but the lightness of aluminum is one of its biggest practical advantages—it eliminates the expensive tie-in work that tile or slate would demand.
Does hail insurance coverage change with a metal roof?
Your insurer may offer a discount because this roof earns UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available. That means it withstands hailstones up to 1.5 inches in diameter without permanent loss of protective function, and the warranty covers perforation from hail at that size. Insurers recognize that Class 4 roofs file fewer damage claims over their lifetimes. Call your agent with the UL 2218 rating and your insurer's hail deductible; many offer premium reductions that partially offset the roof's cost. Zigzag's hail risk is lower than some regions, but the rating protects you either way.
Is this roof really the last roof you'll install?
Functionally, yes. Asphalt shingles last 15–20 years in Zigzag's climate and then go to the landfill; aluminum lasts for generations. The Guardian warranty is lifetime limited and non-prorated for the original owner, covering rusting, splitting, cracking, and loss of impact resistance—then transfers once to the next owner for 50 years from completion. You'll repair gutters, flashing, and vents; you won't replace the roof panels. The current promotion offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation, which softens the upfront cost while the long life justifies it.
How much maintenance does a metal roof need?
Minimal. Aluminum is non-combustible and has no granules to shed, wood fiber to split, or asphalt to degrade. Zigzag's roughly 2852 annual sunshine hours and 1834 mm rain mean seasonal debris cleanup in gutters is your main task, just as with asphalt. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading (measured by ASTM D4214 and D2244), so no recoating is necessary. Compare that to asphalt, which needs roof treatments or replacement every 15–20 years, or tile, which demands routine sealing and mortar work.
Who installs Interlock roofs in the Zigzag area?
Interlock Metal Roofing (PNW) Inc. has served this region since 1997. They're based locally and know Clackamas County's weather patterns, building codes, and permit process. Interlock Metal Roofing has manufactured its panels in Delta, BC since 1998 and installed them everywhere from coastal homes to Antarctica, so your installer carries three decades of field experience with the product. They can assess whether your roof installs over existing shingles (most cases) or requires tearoff, and they'll handle the permit and inspection locally.
Is a metal roof a good choice for Zigzag’s climate?
Yes. Zigzag averages about 223 cm of snow, 1834 mm of rain, roughly 42 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 138 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
