Review: May 16, 2016 Completion: August 18, 2021

It has been a year since I had my Interlock roof installed and I have meant to write this letter. I am glad I waited because I discovered additional advantages to the roof system by Interlock. I initially was impressed by the planning. Mr. Baldassari explained the roof, brought samples, how it would be installed on my house and interface with existing gutters. He also provided local addresses of Interlock roofs that I could view which was very helpful. During the planning process, he recommended changes I may not have thought of but would eliminate future costs and problems. In my case, he recommended the replacement of several failing skylights which I would purchase but be installed at no charge. The job went smoothly. The crew showed up early and stayed late, answered all my questions, leaving a clean, organized job site at the end of each day. The attention to detail was impressive. The house was a complex roof with several skylights, vents, and a masonry chimney. There was also a large barn and outbuilding, Demetri, one of the crew, reinstalled a large weathervane on the barn assuring me if he installed it, it would never come off. I was happy with the roof install. Since the installation, I have found additional benefits. Because my roof had not failed completely the Interlock roof was able to be installed over the existing roof eliminating the cost of strip off and keeping all the asphalt shingles out of the landfill. I also reduced my insurance risk; one of the considerations was the high wind rating. I live in a hurricane high wind zone for insurance coverage. The deductible was about equal to a new asphalt roof if I put a new conventional roof on replacement cost is not covered, and they prorate it and give you even less as the roof ages, so you basically have no roof insurance. I feel I do not have that problem now with the Interlock roof due to the high wind rating and " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty. I have just retired, and this gives me a great peace of mind, a lifetime durable roof. I also lowered my insurance cost as now all buildings have a class “A” fire rating on the roof. The roof qualified for federal energy credits and meets “Energy Star” ratings, so I saved money on taxes. My energy costs are lower; the roof reflects summer heat keeping the attic cooler reducing air conditioning costs. My attic is vented to outside and uninsulated, so there is no advantage to heating. This roof also eliminates " title="ice dams" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">ice dams due to its design, and while many homes had ice dams and water damage to the interior of the house last winter, I had no formation of ice dams and no damage at all, an unexpected bonus. I do not notice any noise from rain or weather an initial concern I had. I live on a busy street and have people stop to compliment on the roof (aged " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">copper) and get information which I am happy to give. I have a more beautiful home, peace of mind, and will never have to re-roof.

Review: August 12, 2012 Completion: June 24, 2013

Dear Interlock: It has been a couple of months since the installation of my Interlock roof was completed, and two neighborhood endorsements have been forthcoming in that period. First, neighbors have commented about how good it looks, and second, they have commented on the daily cleanup done by the installation crew. I heartily endorse my neighbors’ comments. The cleanup factor really became evident shortly after when a conventional shingle roof was installed a few houses away by a local contractor. Materials were staged in front of the house rather than out of sight in the rear, and the place looked like a mess until the job was completed. As you are aware, the design of my house coupled with the prior construction of an addition across the length of the rear presented unusual challenges. While aluminum shingles could be used on the front, the slope of the back required an installation of Interlock’s membrane roof product. Further complicating the matter was a double roof in the rear with no ventilation of the void between the two roofs. Although you built a ventilation solution into the contract price, hidden construction issues once the work commenced on the rear necessitated redesigning the proposed ventilation solution. This could easily have been an opportunity for Interlock to take advantage of the situation, but the pricing of the change was handled by you and your office staff in a very fair manner. The extensive carpentry that became necessary did, I suspect, add the better part of a day to the job, yet the additional cost was nominal for the effort involved. As important as the pricing was to me, it was just as important and most gratifying to see the carpentry skills employed by the installation crew as they implemented the changes. The one concern my wife had in going with a metal roof was noise during a rainstorm, and some severe weather has shown that noise is not a problem. Also, as everyone is aware, July broke heat records, yet my home’s interior has been more comfortable thanks to the reflectivity of the roof. In conclusion, I am very pleased with the outcome.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Sakonnet

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Sakonnet, Rhode Island. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Sakonnet.

Will a metal roof hold up through Rhode Island's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes — aluminum actually thrives in freeze-thaw conditions because it expands and contracts uniformly without cracking or splitting like asphalt or wood. Sakonnet experiences about 64 freeze-thaw days per year, a cycle that degrades traditional roofing materials over time. Interlock's 3105-H24 aluminum alloy resists this stress, and the four-way interlocking system accommodates seasonal movement without compromising panel integrity. The Guardian Warranty explicitly covers cracking, curling, and splitting — conditions that commonly plague conventional roofs in your climate. That's why the material is installed from coastal homes to Antarctic research stations.

How does Interlock Metal Roofing handle heavy snow and ice dams?

Metal roofing's smooth surface naturally sheds snow and ice before dams can form, unlike asphalt that absorbs heat and triggers the freeze-melt-refreeze cycle. Sakonnet receives about 67 cm of snow annually and averages 22 km/h wind with gusts reaching 178 km/h — conditions that load traditional roofs with retained ice. Interlock panels are designed with profiles that guide snow off safely, and optional snow guards are available if you need to retain snow for aesthetic reasons. The lightweight construction (the Slate profile installs at roughly 0.41 lb/sq ft) means your home's structure handles the seasonal weight far better than slate or tile alternatives, reducing stress year-round.

Why is aluminum roofing better than steel for coastal Rhode Island?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron — the element that oxidizes and causes rust in steel roofing. Instead, aluminum develops a thin, self-healing oxide layer that protects the underlying metal; if you scratch the surface, the oxide immediately reforms. Sakonnet's maritime climate with approximately 1210 mm of annual rainfall creates ideal conditions for rust in iron-based materials, but Interlock aluminum thrives in salt-air and wet environments. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish (applied to both sides of every panel and warranted 30 years against chalking and fading) provides an additional protective barrier. This dual protection is why Interlock panels are installed in coastal regions worldwide without degradation.

Can this metal roof survive Sakonnet's coastal wind gusts?

Yes — Interlock's four-way interlocking system is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph, well above the 178 km/h (about 111 mph) gusts typical of your area. The interlocking design distributes wind load across multiple panels so that individual gusts cannot lift or separate them. Your region averages about 22 km/h winds daily, but the coastal location means occasional severe events; the roof's engineering handles both routine wind and extreme conditions. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 confirms compliance with IBC and IRC wind-load requirements, meaning your installation meets Rhode Island building code without compromise. Metal roofing's light weight (roughly 0.41–0.59 lb/sq ft depending on profile) also reduces wind-induced stress compared to slate or tile.

Will hail damage my metal roof, and can I get an insurance discount?

Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating — the highest available — and the warranty explicitly covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This rating often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts because metal roofs reduce claim frequency and severity. Sakonnet's climate brings occasional spring hail, and the Slate, Cedar Shingle, and Shake profiles are all tested to survive repeated hail impact without losing structural integrity or weathertightness. Many insurers recognize this resilience and offer reduced premiums; contact your agent with the ESR-1790 report and UL 2218 Class 4 rating to explore savings. The upfront cost difference between aluminum and asphalt shrinks quickly when insurance reductions are factored in over the roof's 30+ year life.

Is a metal roof worth the cost in Rhode Island, or should I stick with asphalt?

Aluminum roofing costs more upfront but is typically the last roof you buy, whereas asphalt requires replacement every 15–20 years. The Guardian Warranty provides a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty to the original owner and transfers 50 years to the next owner — asphalt has no comparable longevity. Over 50 years, the math favors metal: one aluminum roof versus three to four asphalt replacements, plus accumulated labor, waste-disposal, and structural stress. Sakonnet's 1210 mm annual rainfall and 67 cm snow accelerate asphalt degradation; aluminum resists these conditions without deterioration. Current financing includes no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation, making the initial investment more manageable while you recoup savings through durability and (often) insurance discounts.

Is aluminum roofing better for the environment than asphalt?

Yes — Interlock aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable and ends the asphalt tear-off-to-landfill cycle that occurs every 15–20 years. When an asphalt roof reaches end-of-life, it becomes waste; aluminum can be melted and reformed indefinitely without degradation. Sakonnet homeowners choosing a single 50-year metal roof instead of three asphalt replacements eliminate three roof-removal and landfill events over the same period. The material's lightweight construction (Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft) also reduces transportation emissions compared to slate or clay tile. Interlock has been manufactured in Delta, BC since 1998, and the CALGreen verification confirms reduced-maintenance benefits that lower the roof's operational environmental impact. Choosing aluminum directly reduces your home's waste footprint.

How long does installation take, and can you install over my old roof?

Installation timelines depend on roof size and complexity, but most Sakonnet homes are completed in 5–10 working days. Interlock panels install directly over existing asphalt, wood shake, or even light-weight tile roofs — no tear-off required unless structural issues are present. This advantage saves thousands in labor and disposal costs while minimizing disruption to your home. The lightweight construction (roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile) means your existing structure typically needs no reinforcement; most homes support the new roof immediately. Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. has served the region since 1999 and handles all steps from inspection and permitting to final installation. The local team understands Rhode Island code requirements (ESR-1790 compliance) and Sakonnet's specific site conditions, ensuring a seamless process.

What maintenance does a metal roof really need?

Aluminum roofing requires virtually no maintenance — no sealing, no algae treatment, no gutter cleaning related to roof debris. Unlike asphalt that sheds granules, loses surface integrity, and develops moss in humid climates, Interlock's smooth, non-porous surface resists degradation. Sakonnet's approximately 3103 sunshine hours per year and frequent rainfall create ideal conditions for algae and lichen growth on asphalt and wood roofs; metal naturally discourages both. The only routine task is clearing gutters of surrounding tree debris — the same work required by any roof. The Alunar coating (30-year warranty against chalking and fading) means the finish remains vibrant without pressure washing or recoating. This dramatically lower maintenance burden, verified by CALGreen reduced-maintenance certification, translates to years of hassle-free ownership compared to asphalt, wood shake, or tile.

Does a metal roof help sell my house in Rhode Island?

Yes — metal roofing enhances curb appeal and signals to buyers that your home is well-maintained and built for durability. The Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, and Mediterranean Tile profiles replicate traditional aesthetics while eliminating the liabilities of their source materials (wood rot, slate splitting, tile fragility). Sakonnet's coastal location and maritime character make authentic architectural styles appealing, and Interlock's profiles deliver that look without asphalt's obvious dated appearance. The transferable Guardian Warranty (50 years to the next owner) is a compelling selling feature — buyers recognize they're inheriting a roof that won't need replacement for decades. The combination of distinctive appearance, proven longevity, and warranty coverage typically offsets the initial premium, making the home more attractive in a competitive market. energy-efficiency ratings and hail/wind certifications also appeal to insurance-conscious buyers.
