I am totally pleased with my decision over 10 years ago to go with a 50 year Interlock Metal Roof! It has held up great to the test of time and when I am no longer on this mortal coil, my daughter, granddaughters or grandson will be benefitting from my decision!

Review: July 21, 2004

Our Interlock Roof has now been installed three weeks and we couldn't be more pleased. Suffice to say we haven't yet experienced the winds and rains of winter, but we are enjoying a much cooler home interior, as advertised. Certainly the compliments we have been receiving from neighbors and passersby have been most positive and rewarding. Our cul-de-sac has five homes, each with a different roof; " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">shake, tile, wood shingle, comp, and Interlock Aluminum, and needless to say which one stands out the most. Several have even asked if it's a "" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate roof. We've had so many ask about it that I now carry three of the shake shingles around in my car to show people we visit what InterlLock is all about. Needless to say we've become quite an expert at "locking" them together. The installation process was most impressive. We had two neighborhood homes, receive "comp" roofs while ours was being installed. They took about 3 days each to complete. Your installation team of Alex and Viktor Drigailo were here 11 days and what a pleasure and experience it was to observe their work. Just watching the time and care they exercised was sufficient to all that Interlock was a "different" roof. Their work ethic was something to behold and it was indeed our pleasure to have them with us for that period. We've even taken their photographs to remember them by. Thank you all for making our new Interlock roof possible.

Review: September 16, 2020

We had the Interlock Roof put on our home this month and I am satisfied with the look and performance of the roof so far. The crew completed the roof in a timely fashion, and was very professional! Our neighbors have paid us compliments about the roof. I really look forward to the longevity of the roof. The temperature the week following the installation was in the 80’s, and the roof kept the temperature inside our house at 75. We did not have to run the air conditioning until we reached the 90’s. The temperature inside our garage was approximately 20 degrees cooler than before the roof. To anyone looking to replace his or her roof, I would recommend the Interlock Roofing System!

Review: June 19, 2017

We would like to commend Interlock for your product and service. Our house is 1572 square foot ranch style home. It took two days to install the new roof. No mess no waste. The installation crew was very polite and professional. They didn’t mind me supervising (watching) or asking questions. Interlock Roofing works as advertised. We have had a wide variety of weather in the last 50 days, heavy rain, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hail, and eighty-degree temperatures. I believe that the Interlock roof system makes my Leaf Guard gutters more efficient in shedding the rain than the old asphalt shingles. We didn’t know it was hailing until we looked out the windows. The house is cooler with this roof on, it does reflect the heat. It is a great long-term investment.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Machias

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Machias, Washington. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Machias.

Does metal roofing handle heavy snow and ice dams in Snohomish County winters?

Yes—aluminum panels shed snow and ice effectively because they're smooth, slippery, and non-porous. Machias receives about 52 cm of snow annually across roughly 58 freeze-thaw cycles per year, which means repeated ice formation and melt. Metal roofing's aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) won't absorb moisture or rot from that cycling the way wood or asphalt do. Optional snow guards keep snow from sliding unexpectedly. The four-way interlocking design (ESR-1790 rated) and solid underlayment prevent leaks from backed-up meltwater.

Will a metal roof leak in the Pacific Northwest's constant rain?

No. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels are designed specifically for wet climates—Interlock has installed roofs in coastal salt-air environments since 1998. Machias averages 1372 mm of rain yearly, but the overlapping panel design and solid deck with underlayment eliminate standing water. Aluminum oxide forms a protective layer that never rusts or corrodes, so even in the wettest year, the metal itself remains waterproof. Proper installation by a trained local crew (Interlock Metal Roofing PNW has served this region since 1997) ensures every seam performs.

Why don't metal roofs rust like steel roofing does?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. When exposed to moisture or salt air, a thin, transparent oxide layer forms on its surface and actually heals itself if scratched—no bare metal is ever exposed to corrosion. Steel roofing rusts; aluminum does not. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating (applied to both sides, 30-year warranty) adds another protective barrier, especially important in Snohomish County's wet climate with 1372 mm annual rain and occasional salt-air influence from proximity to coastal systems. This aluminum alloy (3105-H24 / 3003-H24, ASTM B209) has been proven in Antarctic research stations and salt-spray environments.

Can my house's frame handle a metal roof, or do I need reinforcement?

Your frame almost certainly handles it without reinforcement. Interlock metal roofing is extraordinarily light—the Mediterranean Tile profile installs at about 0.59 lb/sq ft, roughly 96% lighter than concrete or tile. Even the heavier Shake profile is only 0.58 lb/sq ft. Most homes built to code support asphalt shingles (10-15 lb/sq ft), so metal roofing actually reduces structural load. This means you can install it directly over your existing roof in most cases, eliminating costly decking work. Interlock's ICC-ES evaluation (ESR-1790) confirms installation over existing structures.

How does metal roofing hold up to Puget Sound wind gusts?

The four-way interlocking panels lock together so tightly that they resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h)—far beyond Machias's typical gust peaks around 96 km/h. Each panel interlocks on four sides, distributing wind load across the entire roof system rather than straining individual fasteners. This four-way design (verified in ICC-ES ESR-1790) was engineered for coastal and mountainous regions where wind is constant and intense. Local installers trained by Interlock ensure every fastener and overlap is sealed to spec, so your roof stays watertight and secure through typical winter storms and spring gusts.

Will freeze-thaw cycles crack or damage a metal roof?

No. Aluminum expands and contracts minimally compared to asphalt, wood, or ceramic materials, and it has no internal porosity to trap water and freeze. Machias experiences roughly 58 freeze-thaw days per year—typical for the Puget Sound region—but metal doesn't absorb moisture, so ice formation inside the material is impossible. The roofing-grade aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) is engineered for this cycling. Unlike asphalt, which hardens and cracks as temperatures swing, or wood shake, which splits, aluminum remains flexible and resilient through hundreds of freeze-thaw cycles.

How long will a metal roof last, and what's actually covered?

The Guardian warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for you as the original owner—it covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance with no time limit. The transferable term gives the next owner 50 years of coverage from completion, adding value at resale. With proper installation and maintenance, an Interlock roof lasts 50+ years; many installed since 1998 are still performing flawlessly. Machias's 1372 mm annual rainfall and 52 cm snow won't degrade the aluminum or Alunar coating (30-year color/fade warranty, ASTM D4214/D2244 tested). This is genuinely the last roof you'll buy.

What maintenance does a metal roof actually need?

Very little—that's the point. Unlike asphalt shingles, which degrade, curl, and shed granules, or cedar shake, which needs chemical treatment and rots in Snohomish County's wet climate (1372 mm rain yearly), metal roofing is passive. Twice yearly, flush gutters and inspect fasteners; annually, rinse the roof with a garden hose to keep it clean. The aluminum alloy and Alunar coating (30-year warranty) require no sealing, painting, or chemical application. CALGreen-verified low-maintenance design means you're not spending weekends on the roof. Local installer Interlock Metal Roofing PNW can handle any inspection or minor adjustment.

Is metal roofing truly fire-resistant?

Yes—Class A fire rating is available for Interlock profiles because aluminum is non-combustible (it won't burn). Many homeowners in Snohomish County choose Class A for insurance discounts and peace of mind. The metal panels themselves won't ignite even in direct flame, and they won't spread fire across the roof deck. This is a real safety advantage over asphalt or wood shake, especially important in spring and fall when dry conditions arrive. Check with your insurer; some offer lower premiums for Class A metal roofing, which can offset installation cost over a few years.

Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt?

Yes, when you measure total cost over the roof's lifespan. Asphalt shingles in Machias—with 1372 mm rain, 52 cm snow, and 58 freeze-thaw days annually—typically last 15-20 years before curling, granule loss, and rot force replacement. You'll reroof twice or three times in 50 years. Metal roofing, backed by a lifetime limited warranty (non-prorated for the original owner), lasts 50+ years and requires minimal maintenance. Material cost is higher; labor is comparable. Over five decades, one metal installation beats two or three asphalt replacements, plus you eliminate tear-off fees, landfill disposal, and disruption. Current promotion: no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation.
