Just had my roof done here in Airdrie, Alberta and I couldn’t be happier knowing that I am fully protected from the Alberta weather, Tyler van Ellenberg was extremely knowledge on the Interlock product lines and was an absolute pleasure to deal with. If you are in the market for a roof and don’t want to have to worry about the future in my opinion Interlock is the way to go.

After my last experience with Interlock I would not recommend the company to anyone. See "Additional Comments" This is the second "Interlock Roof" that we have had installed in the last 2 years due to Hail Damage. The first install went extremely well. The two fellows that installed it were professional and courteous. Except for the "construction" noise - which did not seem to be too bad - we didn't even know they were there. We were very happy with the roof.I am very disappointed in the second install. Firstly - we had Siding, Eaves Troughs and Fascia replaced prior to the roof install. We were told by Interlock that this should be done first as it would avoid anyone being on the roof after it was completed. The Eaves Troughs and Fascia were completed two weeks before your crew showed up and it looked perfect. After the roof install the Fascia had been damaged in several places. At all of the peaks it had looked like the fascia had been bent back and then put back in place - it look terrible. The fascia on the garage was all scratched up and the eaves trough on the garage was bent. The crew that came was not professional at all. They had a radio blaring on the roof and then on top of that the guys were yelling and singing at the tops of their voices as well as liberal use of the "F" Word - totally inappropriate for a residential setting. We brought by Father, who lived with me, home from the hospital on Friday, March 27. He was very ill and needed his rest. I asked the guys to turn the radio off and they did - the normal construction noise was not an issue. Over the course of 4 days I had to go out and ask them to turn it off 5 times - not sure what part of "My Father is very ill and needs rest" that they didn't understand. A radio blaring on the roof reverberates through the entire house. I emailed Interlock a letter on April 1, 2015 stating the above. I received a call from Rodney - Installation Manager?? - he should not be allowed to speak to customers. I said I would get a quote to have the Eaves Trough and Fascia replaced which I did. He said they would then reinspect the roof to ensure that none of the tiles were damaged by the Eaves Trough guys. I said I would not be paying until all the work was complete and they had inspected the roof. The work was completed on the Eaves Trough and Fascia on Friday May 15th. Rodney called on the morning of Tuesday May 19th looking for payment and threatening to Lien my Property (Monday was the Holiday) as he said the work had been completed over 30 days - I was not satisfied that the work was complete until all the damage had been repaired and that the roof had been inspected by Interlock - which happened on May 19th - after Rodney's call to me. If Rodney is dealing with Customer Service issues you have a big problem. After seeing the damage that the installation crew did to the Eaves/Fascia and thought that was OK, I have serious doubts about the quality of the work that they did on the roof. I am still picking up bits of metal from my yard. At no point has there been any apology from Interlock for any of this and frankly that would have gone a long way.

We were contacted by Colin James about checking out any hail damage. He came and recommended we put in an insurance claim to have the roof replaced. The insurance agreed to covering the roof and gave us the info. within a few days we received a call from Colin to see if we were going to go with interlock for replacement. I said we had to think about it as we really didn't have a chance to discuss what our options were. Colin offered us an upgrade if we went with interlock but he needed to asap as it was his year end. We felt pressured to make a hasty decision. The part I was most annoyed with was the call from Colin came at 10:45 p.m. and I was sound asleep as I had to go to work the next morning. He wanted an answer then and an email to confirm our decision. I had to get up and do that at 11:00 at night. A bit inconsiderate on his part about the time of day and the fact that we really hadn't had a chance to do any research about our other options.

We read an ad in our local newspaper and it talked about the last roof we would ever put on our house guaranteed for 50 years. There was a phone number to call and we really needed to get a new roof as ours was 15 years old and there was no gravel left on the shingles. We called Interlock Roofing, we arranged a date to meet and discuss the application of his product. Within a few days Brad was here and we had a very pleasant and informative meeting with him. By the end of our meeting, we had decided this was the way we wanted to go. Brad said within about thirty days the material and installers would arrive and install the roof. The material arrived within about 15 days and about a month later our installer was on the roof. Jamie a very nice and polite man arrived and introduced himself, he explained what and how he would do the work. We talked daily with Jamie and he would update us on how it was going. They didn’t have to strip the old roof they put the new roof right on top of the old one, saving waste going into the landfill and it didn’t matter if it rained during the installation. It took Jamie about a week, he got rained out one and a half days. When he left at the end of the install there was no sign of him working here other then a new roof. Since the new roof has been installed we have noticed no damage and we have had three " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hail storms that damaged vehicles and siding on houses. I was amazed how the hail just bounced off the roof, and no piles of gravel at the bottom of our downspouts, and no shingles lifting off. The house temperature is more consistent it doesn’t get really warm or really cool it stays where we set it and is more comfortable then before. If you are thinking of replacing your roof you should consider investing in your house and protecting it with an interlock roofing system. I feel good knowing I will never replace our roof again , the material stands up to anything the Alberta weather dishes out and there is peace of mind knowing what you see is what you get today , tomorrow and in the future. The warranty is transferable and the roofing system will ad value to our house if we every were to sell, which I don’t think we will do as we live on an acreage and have the million dollar Mountain View. Brad has come back out to our home twice since the installation, just to make sure we are happy with the new roof. It’s nice to know that he cares even after the bill has been paid. Thanks to Jamie and Brad we have nothing to worry about, that a nice feeling when it comes to our home.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Airdrie

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Airdrie, Alberta. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Airdrie.

How does a metal roof handle Airdrie's heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles?

Aluminum's smooth, hard surface sheds snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt, which absorbs moisture and promotes ice dam formation. With about 114 cm of snow annually and roughly 113 freeze-thaw days per year, this matters. The four-way interlocking panels shed water fast, and aluminum won't crack or delaminate when water refreezes in the panel seams—asphalt and wood shingles do. Interlock's Shake and Slate profiles are designed specifically for climates with this kind of seasonal cycling.

Will a metal roof crack or expand in Airdrie's temperature swings?

No. Aluminum expands and contracts predictably, and the four-way interlocking system accommodates this movement without stress or splitting. Around 113 freeze-thaw cycles per year means your roof faces repeated stress; asphalt shingles curl and crack under this punishment, while wood roofs split. Aluminum's 3105-H24 alloy was engineered for exactly this—the panels flex and recover without permanent deformation, so you won't see the premature failure common in this climate.

Can Airdrie's wind gusts damage a metal roof?

Your roof is warranted to resist winds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Airdrie's typical gusts reach about 92 km/h, leaving a comfortable safety margin. The four-way interlocking panels lock mechanically to each other and to the deck—there's no adhesive to fail in temperature swings. Wind doesn't peel individual shingles or separate panel edges. That's why Interlock installs from coastal salt-air homes to Antarctica; the fastening system doesn't care about the environment.

Can aluminum rust like steel roofing does?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. What it does form is a microscopic oxide layer that actually protects the metal; if scratched during installation or by weather, that layer self-heals. Steel roofing, by contrast, requires constant coating maintenance or it will rust through. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish on both sides of every Interlock panel adds a 30-year warranted barrier against fading and chalking, but even if that coating wore away completely, the aluminum underneath wouldn't corrode. That's a fundamental material difference worth understanding.

Is a metal roof really worth the upfront cost in Airdrie?

Yes, when you stop thinking of the price tag and start thinking of total cost over the roof's life. A typical asphalt roof lasts 15–20 years in a climate like Airdrie's, with 114 cm annual snow and 113 freeze-thaw days accelerating deterioration. You'll replace it two or three times. Interlock's lifetime limited warranty for the original owner, transferable 50 years to the next, means one installation is genuinely the last roof you buy. Factor in lower maintenance, no storm damage claims, and no landfill tear-off cost, and the math favors metal over three decades.

Do I need to reinforce my house frame for a metal roof?

No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile weighs about 0.59 lb/sq ft—roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—so it installs directly over most existing roofs without adding load. Even the heavier Shake profile comes in under 0.58 lb/sq ft. Asphalt weighs about 2–3 lb/sq ft, and tile or slate can exceed 10 lb/sq ft, requiring costly frame upgrades. Aluminum's low mass means you can upgrade your roof without contractor visits to an engineer or reinforcement delays. That's a real cost and time savings unique to metal.

How much upkeep does a metal roof really need?

Far less than asphalt, wood, or tile. There's no algae growth (aluminum doesn't rot), no granule loss, no curling or splitting as freeze-thaw cycles compound. Asphalt requires moss/algae treatment and annual gutter cleanup; wood needs staining and crack repair. Interlock's smooth surface sheds debris fast in Airdrie's 390 mm annual rainfall. The CALGreen-verified design means reduced maintenance obligations. You'll inspect seals around penetrations periodically and keep gutters clear—that's normal for any roof—but you won't face the recurring repairs that asphalt demands, especially in climates with 113 annual freeze-thaw cycles.

Can you install a metal roof over my existing shingles?

Yes. Because aluminum panels weigh so little—about 0.41 lb/sq ft for Slate, 0.58 for Shake—they install over most existing asphalt without decking removal. That cuts labor time and landfill hauling cost. Our local crew, Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd., has served this region since 1999 and handles overlays routinely. Solid deck underneath plus underlayment keep the installation quiet—metal on a solid deck sounds no different from asphalt. Your timeline compresses, and you avoid the dust and disruption of a full tear-off during Airdrie's short construction window.

Does a reflective metal roof actually lower cooling costs in Alberta?

Yes. energy-efficient Interlock colors carry thermal emissivity of 0.84 and solar reflectance up to 0.55, meaning they bounce back heat that asphalt absorbs. With about 3,277 annual sunshine hours in Airdrie and summer temperatures climbing, this matters on cooling days. The roof stays cooler, your air-conditioning runs less, and your summer electric bill drops. Unlike asphalt, which absorbs that energy and transfers heat into the attic, reflective metal keeps more of the sun's energy off your home. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating validates the science—this is measurable energy savings, not marketing.

Is aluminum roofing really better for the environment than asphalt?

Yes. Interlock panels are approximately 95% recyclable; when the time eventually comes to replace or recycle them, the aluminum returns to the supply chain. Asphalt, by contrast, is torn off and sent to the landfill—a cycle repeated every 15–20 years in Airdrie's climate. Over three roof lifespans, you avoid three tear-offs to waste. Aluminum's durability means fewer replacements, less raw material extraction, and a smaller carbon footprint. CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance and environmental impact. It's the honest material choice if you care about what ends up buried.
