Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Phippsburg, Maine
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
Our house experiences high wind and exposure to the elements on the Maine coast. Interlock offered competitive pricing on aluminum shingle roofing. The entire experience was good, from quotation, removal of the old roof, and installation of the new roof.
We really like our roof.
Interlock was great, and installation was just as told to us by sales. The crew worked hard, cleaned area each day and roof looks great! I was impressed by their professionalism and also had a call from home office checking during the install and had a visit from a home office inspector checking progress and quality of install.
The roof looks great Jonathan did a great job of explaining the features of the new roof.the crew was great and very professional and did a great clean up after the installation
Our entire experience; inquiry, ordering, installation, and follow up has been excellent. The roof was justifiably costly and definitely worth the investment. The appearance of our house has been greatly enhanced.
Nazar was awesome to fix roof from winter ice damage. !!
Bought this roofing 20 years ago. It was installed well. Needed improvements to my roof structure were suggested and made to ensure the longevity and worthiness of my roof. All these years later I am still happy I made the investment in my 160 year old home.

Interlock was very professional. They installed my roof in a timely manner and the workmanship was great. Glad I went with interlock. Positive: Responsiveness, Punctuality, Quality, Professionalism, Value Services: Roof damage repair, Roof installation
Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation
All of the above...we had a positive experience and live the look of our roof.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Phippsburg
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Phippsburg, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Phippsburg.
How does a metal roof handle Phippsburg's 130 cm of snow and ice buildup?
Interlock metal panels shed snow more readily than asphalt because their smooth, hard surface prevents ice dams that trap meltwater against the roof deck. Phippsburg receives about 130 cm of snow annually and experiences roughly 86 freeze–thaw cycles per year—conditions that degrade asphalt through repeated expansion and contraction. Aluminum's non-corrosive nature means it won't weaken from salt spray or ice exposure, and the four-way interlocking system distributes loads evenly. Snow guards are available for areas where controlled shedding is preferred, giving you safe options rather than relying on friction alone.
Will freeze-thaw cycles in Maine damage an aluminum metal roof?
No—aluminum thrives in freeze-thaw climates because it expands and contracts uniformly without cracking, splitting, or losing integrity. With about 86 freeze–thaw days yearly, Phippsburg's cycling is exactly what aluminum was engineered to endure. The 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 alloy (ASTM B209) maintains its structural properties across temperature swings; the oxide layer that prevents rust also protects the material from the salt and moisture that accelerate asphalt and wood degradation. Concrete and clay tiles, by contrast, absorb water into microscopic pores, freeze internally, and crack—a failure mechanism aluminum simply doesn't experience.
Can aluminum roofing rust in coastal Maine's salty air?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes and corrodes. Instead, aluminum forms a thin, invisible oxide layer that protects the bare metal, and this layer self-heals when scratched. Interlock panels are coated with Alunar 70% PVDF on both sides (top and bottom), warranted 30 years against chalking and fading, providing a second defense against Sagadahoc County's salt spray and 1022 mm of annual rainfall. Steel roofing requires constant vigilance against rust; aluminum eliminates that risk entirely, making it the only choice for coastal homes where salt air corrodes ferrous metals within years.
Are metal roofs really rated for Maine's worst-case winds and gusts?
Yes—Interlock metal roofing is warranted to resist sustained winds up to 120 mph when installed to specification, and Phippsburg's typical peak gusts reach about 129 km/h (80 mph), well within that rating. The four-way interlocking panel design distributes uplift forces across the entire roof system rather than concentrating stress on fasteners. Independent testing (ICC-ES ESR-1790) confirms code compliance for Maine's IBC/IRC wind loads. This design advantage means your roof won't lift or separate during the kind of nor'easter gusts that can peel asphalt shingles or crack brittle tile—a real concern in Sagadahoc County's maritime climate.
Does Interlock roofing hold up to hail, and can it lower my insurance premiums?
Interlock metal roofing earns UL 2218 Class 4—the highest impact rating available—and the Guardian Warranty covers hail perforation even from 1.5-inch hailstones. Class 4 testing involves steel balls dropped from heights that dent asphalt shingles permanently and crack tile; aluminum panels absorb and dissipate impact energy without cracking or losing waterproofing. Many insurers recognize this durability and offer discounts for Class 4 roofing, especially in regions prone to severe weather. Ask your agent about your specific policy, but the objective fact is that metal roofing reduces the risk of hail damage to your home—a real liability reduction that impacts your annual premium.
What does the Interlock lifetime warranty actually cover, and how long is it?
The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance—essentially every failure mode that ends asphalt or wood roofs. For the next owner, the warranty transfers once and provides 50 years of coverage from completion date. Non-prorated means you don't pay a percentage of the repair cost based on roof age; Interlock covers defects. This structure reflects aluminum's real lifespan: installations from 1998 onward (27 years of field history) show no age-related failures. Paired with the 30-year coating warranty on the Alunar finish, you're protected across the timeline of normal home ownership.
Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles over 30 years?
Yes, because asphalt requires full replacement every 15–20 years, plus maintenance (repairs, ventilation upgrades, waste disposal), whereas Interlock metal installs once. Phippsburg's 130 cm of snow and 86 annual freeze–thaw cycles accelerate asphalt failure; you'll likely replace it twice in 30 years, spending roughly double the total cost and sending tons of shingles to landfill. Metal roofing costs more upfront but carries a lifetime warranty (non-prorated for the first owner), eliminates replacement cycles, and remains fully recyclable at end-of-life—95% recovery rate versus nearly zero for asphalt. Current financing includes no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation, lowering the effective cost further. Over the roof's life, you buy metal once.
Can my home's framing handle a metal roof, or do I need expensive structural work?
Metal roofing is extraordinarily light—the Mediterranean Tile profile installs at approximately 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. Your home's framing was likely designed to carry asphalt or wood shingles, so metal roofing actually reduces load on rafters and beams. Slate and Cedar Shingle profiles are similarly lightweight (0.41–0.44 lb/sq ft), meaning Interlock can install directly over most existing roofs without reinforcement. This is a major advantage in older Maine homes, where adding structural capacity is costly and invasive. The lightweight design saves you thousands in potential framing upgrades while delivering the aesthetic of premium materials—you get slate's look and durability without slate's structural penalty.
Who installs Interlock metal roofing in Phippsburg, and how experienced are they?
Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. has served Sagadahoc County and the broader region since 1999—25 years of installation expertise in Maine's coastal climate. They understand Phippsburg's snow load, salt spray, and wind patterns, and they're familiar with the diverse home styles and existing roof types in the area. All five Interlock profiles are available through this local installer, and they can advise on which style suits your home and site conditions. With a quarter-century of regional service, they bring institutional knowledge about freeze-thaw durability, proper ice-and-water underlayment techniques, and warranty claim support. Choosing a local, experienced installer protects your warranty and ensures your roof performs as designed.
How much maintenance does an Interlock metal roof need compared to asphalt or wood?
Interlock metal roofing requires virtually no maintenance—no replacement of rotted shingles, no repair of curling edges, no wood treatment, no algae or moss scrubbing. Asphalt shingles degrade visibly after 10–15 years in Maine's 3085 sunshine hours and 86 freeze–thaw cycles per year; wood shakes absorb moisture and split. Aluminum's oxide layer and Alunar PVDF finish resist UV, salt, and moisture without degradation. Periodic inspection (after severe weather) and clearing debris from valleys are all that's needed—no more than you'd do for any roof. The CALGreen rating confirms that Interlock qualifies as a reduced-maintenance roofing system, lowering your long-term care burden and the risk of costly repairs mid-life.
