Review: July 19, 2021 Completion: August 14, 2019

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Small Point

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Small Point, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Small Point.

How does a metal roof handle Maine's heavy snow and ice, and will I need snow guards?

Metal roofs shed snow efficiently due to their smooth surface and low thermal mass, reducing ice dam formation—a critical advantage in Small Point's typical 130 cm annual snowfall. The four-way interlocking panels create a unified surface that prevents snow from infiltrating seams. Snow guards can be added where needed to protect walkways or gutters, but the roof's inherent design minimizes the buildup that causes structural stress on homes in freeze-thaw climates like yours, with about 81 freeze-thaw cycles per year.

Will freeze-thaw cycles in Maine damage an aluminum metal roof over time?

Aluminum naturally resists freeze-thaw damage because it expands and contracts uniformly without cracking or splitting—unlike asphalt shingles or clay tiles. The material's flexibility and the absence of moisture absorption mean repeated freezing cycles (Small Point averages 81 per year) do not degrade the aluminum itself. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating, warranted 30 years against degradation, protects the surface through this seasonal stress, ensuring the roof performs consistently across decades of Maine winters.

Why should I choose aluminum over steel metal roofing in a coastal Maine climate?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron; instead, it develops a protective oxide layer that self-heals when scratched—essential in Sagadahoc County's salt-air environment. Steel requires ongoing maintenance to prevent rust, especially near the ocean. Interlock aluminum is coated with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish on both sides, adding a 30-year warranty against chalking and fading even under coastal exposure. This dual protection means your roof resists corrosion without the maintenance burden steel demands.

Can a metal roof withstand Maine's coastal wind gusts and nor'easters?

Yes—Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist winds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Small Point experiences typical gusts around 129 km/h, and the interlocking design distributes wind load across the entire roof rather than stressing individual fasteners. The panels lock together mechanically, creating a unified structure that strengthens rather than loosens in high wind. This engineering is verified under ICC-ES ESR-1790 compliance, ensuring your roof stays secure through nor'easters and seasonal storms.

How does an aluminum metal roof handle Maine's frequent heavy rain?

Small Point receives approximately 1003 mm of annual rainfall, and Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are engineered to shed water without pooling or infiltration. Each panel locks to its neighbors on four sides, creating an overlapped, unbroken surface; water flows downslope without entering seams. The panels install over a solid deck and underlayment, matching asphalt's leak protection while offering superior durability. When installed to specification, the roof resists heavy rainfall events and persistent moisture typical of Maine's maritime climate without requiring special maintenance.

Do I need to reinforce my home's structure for a metal roof, or can it install over my existing shingles?

No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock aluminum is extraordinarily lightweight—the Slate profile installs at 0.41 lb/sq ft, and the Mediterranean Tile profile (which replicates heavy concrete or clay tile) is about 96% lighter than the real thing. This allows the roof to install directly over most existing asphalt roofing without adding load. Because Maine's 81 annual freeze-thaw cycles stress older roof decks, the ability to overlay without decking removal saves time, cost, and disruption while protecting your home from further weather exposure.

Does a metal roof hold up in hail, and could it lower my homeowner's insurance?

Interlock aluminum carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This rating demonstrates non-combustibility and impact resistance that many insurers recognize favorably. Metal roofs often qualify for insurance discounts due to durability and low maintenance claims. Given Small Point's annual hail exposure and the roof's verified performance, contact your insurer about potential savings; the combination of Class 4 impact rating and a lifetime limited warranty may improve your premium.

What's the real lifespan of an aluminum metal roof, and what does the warranty actually cover?

Interlock backs its aluminum roof with The Guardian—a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. The coating itself carries a separate 30-year warranty against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214/D2244 measured). The warranty transfers once to the next owner for 50 years from completion, protecting your investment and enhancing resale appeal. This is the only roof you will buy for your home—a practical reality in Maine's harsh climate.

Can a metal roof actually save me money on heating and cooling in Maine?

energy-efficient Interlock colors reflect solar heat rather than absorbing it, with thermal emissivity up to 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Cool Roof Rating Council rated). While Maine's 3094 annual sunshine hours are modest compared to southern climates, this reflectance reduces cooling costs in summer months and lessens heat loss through radiation in winter. The metal's thermal properties also speed snow melt in spring when freeze-thaw cycling is most intense, reducing ice dam risk. Over decades, reflective roofing contributes measurable energy savings in a maritime climate.

Is a metal roof better for the environment than replacing my asphalt shingles?

Yes—Interlock aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable at end of life, breaking the asphalt tear-off-to-landfill cycle that repeats every 20 years. Your old shingles (typically 3–5 tons per roof) would landfill; aluminum roofing remains valuable. Because the lightweight design installs over existing roofs, you avoid one or more decking tear-offs over the roof's lifetime, further reducing waste and site disruption. The roof lasts for generations and transfers with ownership, extending environmental value. Choosing aluminum means choosing a material stream, not a disposal problem.
