They could have improved the scheduling. We were scheduled almost a year out. We enjoy our roof but it took a long time. There were spots in the weather that would have been great to do the job but we missed those spots.

Review: September 15, 2023Completion: May 10, 2023

Originally my house had an aluminum shingle roof by Fin-all. Eleven years later, after an oak tree fell across my house , my insurance company installed a steel shingle roof because they said Fin-all was no longer in business. I was disappointed because I felt the replacement roof was not up to the standard of the aluminum roof that I originally had. Then we had a bad ice storm that broke huge branches from all the trees - sending a large branch spearing through my roof. After failing to be able to find out what kind of roof the insurance company had installed on my house they finally agreed to replace the entire roof again. After much research I finally found Interlock. I found out from Damon that Interlock is actually the company that bought out Fin-all; my original roof! Even though interlock was more expensive than any other estimate I received my insurance company accepted their estimate. All this to say: Interlock is even better than my original roof because they have made improvements on the original design and the quality is obviously better than the steel shingles that were replaced. The Interlock crew chief took the time to explain the differences in manufacturing and installation -Interlock is sturdier and has better texture for a much more appealing look. Both my previous roofs would take damage if walked on but because of the design and texture in these new shingles, they are much sturdier. I am confident that I now have the best roof on the market- and an excellent warranty as well!! Positive: Responsiveness, Quality, Professionalism Services: Roof damage repair, Roof installation

They need to teach the salespeople that when a customer says no and requests 24-48 hours to think about using them that they should honor that request. They should not try to bug me more about it until I decide to use them. They did not want to wait the time that I requested before bugging me again.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Detroit

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Detroit, Oregon. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Detroit.

Will a metal roof handle Detroit's snow load and ice dams?

Yes. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels shed snow and ice effectively, and the system's light weight—the Shake profile weighs just 0.58 lb/sq ft—eliminates the structural strain that causes ice dams on heavy roofs. Detroit receives about 728 cm of snow annually. The smooth, hard aluminum surface prevents ice adhesion better than asphalt, reducing ice-dam formation during your region's 115 freeze-thaw days per year. Optional snow guards are available if you need to manage snow placement on lower roofs.

Does aluminum hold up to freeze-thaw cycles?

Aluminum thrives in freeze-thaw environments. The material contains no iron, so it cannot rust when exposed to water and temperature swings—a critical advantage during Detroit's roughly 115 freeze-thaw days annually. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214), protecting the finish through repeated freezing and thawing. Aluminum's oxide layer self-heals when scratched, maintaining integrity year after year in your climate.

Why should I choose aluminum over steel metal roofing?

Steel rusts; aluminum does not. Steel requires ongoing maintenance and coatings to prevent corrosion—especially problematic in climates with heavy precipitation like Detroit's 861 mm annual rainfall. Interlock's 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) is non-ferrous: no iron means no rust, ever. The aluminum's protective oxide layer self-heals when scratched, restoring corrosion resistance without intervention. Over 27 years, you'll avoid the hidden costs of steel maintenance and premature failure.

Can metal roofing withstand Detroit's wind gusts?

Yes, comfortably. Interlock panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Detroit's typical wind gusts reach 122 km/h, well within that envelope. The four-way interlocking design distributes wind load across the entire panel system, preventing lifting or separation. ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 (IBC/IRC, reissued 2025) confirms the structural integrity. You get engineered wind resistance backed by a warranty.

Does a metal roof stand up to hail, and can it lower my insurance?

Interlock metal roofing holds a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available. The warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. That durability often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts; contact your agent with the UL 2218 Class 4 certification. Unlike asphalt shingles, which require replacement after moderate hail, aluminum panels maintain structural and weather integrity. Over a 27-year roof life, the combination of hail resistance and potential premium reductions adds significant financial value.

Is my house strong enough to support a metal roof without reinforcement?

Almost certainly yes. Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile, which replicates the appearance of heavy clay or concrete tile, weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft—roughly 96% lighter than the material it mimics. This extraordinary lightness means no structural reinforcement is required, and the roof installs directly over most existing asphalt or wood-shake roofs. Your home already supports asphalt; aluminum weighs far less. Eliminating reinforcement cuts labor costs and installation time significantly.

How much maintenance does a metal roof need?

Virtually none. Unlike asphalt shingles (which curl, crack, and require granule replacement), wood shakes (which split and rot), or clay tile (which breaks), aluminum does not degrade from moisture, UV, or thermal cycling. Rinse debris occasionally in dry weather; that is sufficient. The Alunar 70% PVDF finish resists chalking and fading for 30 years, eliminating the need for recoating. CALGreen verification confirms Interlock's reduced-maintenance profile. You buy this roof and forget about it until it's time to transfer it to the next owner.

What's the warranty, and how long will this roof actually last?

The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It transfers once to the next owner, good for 50 years from completion. Interlock has manufactured aluminum roofing since 1998—27 years of field performance in diverse climates, from salt-air coastal homes to Antarctic research stations, prove durability. In Detroit's 861 mm rain and 728 cm snow, aluminum outlasts asphalt by decades.

Will a metal roof reduce my summer cooling costs?

Metal roofing lowers cooling costs year-round. Interlock offers energy-efficient colors with thermal emissivity to 0.84 and solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny)—meaning the roof reflects heat that asphalt absorbs. Detroit receives about 3138 sunshine hours annually; that reflectance reduces attic temperature and air-conditioning load in summer. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating confirms measurable energy savings. Over 27 years, the cumulative reduction in cooling costs often covers a significant portion of the roof's price.

Is metal roofing better for the environment than asphalt shingles?

Yes. Aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable; at end of life, your roof becomes feedstock for new products rather than landfill waste. Asphalt shingle tearoffs, by contrast, end the recycling cycle and accumulate in landfills for decades. Interlock's manufacturing since 1998 in Delta, BC uses established aluminum supply chains with minimal environmental impact. Choosing metal over asphalt eliminates the environmental cost of repeated replacements over a century. One roof, one installation, one generation—sustainability through longevity.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Detroit’s climate?

Yes. Detroit averages about 728 cm of snow, 861 mm of rain, roughly 115 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 122 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
