Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Seattle, Washington
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
Great work on time excellent communication excellent clean up
It’s such a relief to have a beautiful, reliable roof over our house now. Patrick, Tony, and the installation crew had their work cut out for them with our 1911 Craftsman’s steep roofs, several bump-outs, and other added details. We’re also nestled pretty tightly in between three other houses, so access points were somewhat limited. But they rose to the challenge admirably. Tearing off the old composite shingle took the better part of one day, but they managed to get new underlayment installed everywhere by the end of it. Unsurprisingly, they found some water damage along the way as well, so they had to replace a few boards, which set them back a little. But all in all, they finished within the week and we’re so pleased with the result. It rained hard the day after and all the old leaks we had stayed nice and dry. Our neighbors complimented us on the new roof as well.
Interlock Metal Roofing is a wonderful product. Michael did an awesome presentation and was very professional and thorough answering all of our questions. If you are in the market for a new roof give them a chance!
The roofing installers did not initially integrate the ice & water shield membrane correctly with the drip edge. I had another roofer prepare the roof deck and put high temp ice & water shield over my whole roof deck ahead of time - a requirement because of my solar panels (and also I think it's a good idea anyway). The ice & water shield wrapped over the edge where the metal fascia was to be installed later. The Interlock installers put the drip edge/starter metal pieces on the edge over the ice & water shield, but they did not put the required strip of additional ice & water shield over the top edge of the starter metal. That is necessary to make sure any water flowing on the surface of the ice & water shield flows over the starter metal and over the drip edge into the gutter rather than under the drip edge and under the fascia. I noticed this after they had already finished two sides, and made sure they did it correctly on the remaining sides of the roof (I had to go to the supplier and get extra ice & water shield for them to use), but it was already too late to correct it on what they'd already done (they would have had to disassemble too much). Of course one would hope no water would ever get to the surface of the ice & water shield, but if we were 100% sure it wouldn't, there'd be no reason for the ice & water shield at all. So, if it's worth it to have ice & water shield, it's worth doing it right.
Prompt return on telephone inquires would be good. I am expecting attention to any problem that might come up. I like the looks of my new roof.
We are extremely happy with our new Interlock standing seam roof. The appearance is great, the heat absorbtion is noticeably lower than our old asphaltic shigle roof, and we won't have to worry about our roof for another 50 years! Better communication about the delays.
We had a very negative experience with the installation team, I will include more details below. 1. Interlock should have had better communication with their installation team; 2) the installation team should have had at least one fluent English speaker; 3) there should probably be more than one installation manager covering the huge geography that Joe is managing.
I've recomended Interlock Roofing to a few friends. i dont know anything babout roofign it was a good job f100% for the start it was awosme GREAT!
Interlock Roofing could have improved on mid-installation communication. There was zero communication in English. I had to call someone to let them know they were doing the job incorrectly, before they got too far. I also had to ask for the supervisor to come out and to do the punch list walk through with me.
Can't beat a lifetime roof! It went pretty smooth. One of the guys' family member came down with covid. He had to go to the hospital to check to see if he had covid. It delayed things a little, but what could you do? My roof looks really nice!
The product is great and we're excited to have this metal roof. The process and communication with Interlock was not great. Communication of process and expectations. Better and safer demo/debris removal. Project manager on site ... first day to review with client.
The Interlock product and sales team are phenomenal. Our neighbors love the look, and I love the peace of mind of having a gorgeous metal roof. The installation was a challenge, and as a stickler for job site safety I had some material concerns during demolition. The team came together and made things right, which my family and I greatly appreciated and the finished product looks gorgeous. JOB SITE SAFETY The job site was unsafe to the point that I nearly cancelled the job. We had multiple young men with no fall protection on the ridge of our roof, for multiple days. They were doing demo and tossing pieces of roof material and plywood against our neighbor's home, our fence, and in the landscaping all around the house. They did little or nothing to protect our home, and scratched a massive picture window in the living room - just thoughtless, sloppy work. Daily cleanup. The sloppiness continued day after day, with the crews leaving tools, sharp pieces of cut and discarded metal, and their own beverage bottles and trash around our yard. It was bizarre. I run construction crews for a living, and would never allow this on any of my sites, particularly for a $45k premium roof installation. Vlad said he would go through the yard with a magnet to pick up all the metal material before he finished - he never did that and our 2.5yr old daughter still finds screws and composite in the garden. It's become a game for her. I take safety seriously. I know it is not my responsibility, but please, please find a better way to train and control for safety with on-site demo and install crews. Our roof is steep and 2.5 stories tall. A slip and fall would have been life altering, or fatal. It makes me sick to my stomach thinking about the young men up there, several of whom appeared to have little or no job site experience. It was unsafe, messy, and gave me the sense that I had paid Interlock for a super-premium product, but was not getting anything near a premium service. Why would someone cut corners like that, and who was pocketing the difference between what I paid, and what those guys were getting paid? It gave me a bad feeling about the whole operation. Vlad's team eventually got the job done, and it looks great, but the whole

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Seattle
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Seattle, Washington. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Seattle.
Will a metal roof rust in Seattle's wet climate?
No—aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. Instead, it forms a self-healing oxide layer that protects against corrosion even when scratched. Seattle receives about 1280 mm of rain yearly and occasional salt-laden air, but Interlock's roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) resists both fresh water and salt exposure. The Alunar® 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating on both sides adds 30 years of protection against chalking and fading, giving you peace of mind through decades of Pacific Northwest moisture.
How does a metal roof handle Seattle's snow and ice?
Metal roofs shed snow and ice effectively because of their smooth, interlocking surface and low friction. Seattle averages about 33 cm of snow annually and 21 freeze-thaw cycles per year, conditions that create ice-dam risk on traditional roofs. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels stay securely fastened through these cycles without the cracking or curling that affects asphalt and wood. Snow guards are available to control controlled shedding, and the light weight (Slate profile at ~0.41 lb/sq ft) means no structural reinforcement is needed even with full snow load.
Does a metal roof really save money on energy bills?
Yes, Interlock's energy-efficient colors reduce cooling costs by reflecting rather than absorbing solar heat. The Aged Copper Penny finish achieves up to 0.55 initial solar reflectance and 0.84 thermal emissivity, cooling your home on sunny days while Seattle's 2931 annual sunshine hours accumulate. In spring, summer, and fall, this reflectance lowers air-conditioning demand; the Cool Roof Rating Council rating confirms measurable energy savings versus asphalt, which absorbs the heat that metal sheds. Over a roof's 40+ year lifespan, the energy advantage compounds into hundreds of dollars in utility savings.
What hail protection does Interlock offer, and could it lower insurance costs?
Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. While Seattle rarely experiences damaging hail, the Pacific Northwest does see occasional severe weather with gusts exceeding 101 km/h and the durability proves your roof's resilience. This Class 4 rating may qualify you for insurance discounts; contact your insurer with the UL 2218 specification. The non-prorated lifetime warranty for the original owner covers impact damage, providing double assurance.
Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?
Yes, when you calculate the total cost over the roof's life, metal becomes the last roof you buy. Asphalt requires replacement every 15–20 years; Interlock carries a lifetime limited, non-prorated warranty for the original owner and remains transferable for 50 years from completion. Over 40 years, you'll replace asphalt twice and possibly three times, paying labor and disposal fees each time. Metal's energy savings (energy-efficient colors reduce cooling demand through 2931 annual Seattle sunshine hours) and potential insurance discounts offset the higher initial investment. The current promotion—no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation—makes the transition more affordable.
What does Interlock's warranty actually cover and how long does it last?
The Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited and non-prorated for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It transfers once to the next owner for 50 years from completion, protecting your investment and boosting resale appeal. The 30-year Alunar® coating warranty (ASTM D4214 / D2244 measured) separately guarantees color and gloss retention. This combination—material coverage for life, plus five decades of transferable protection—reflects the durability Interlock has demonstrated since 1998, when the first panels were installed from coastal salt-air homes to an Antarctic research station.
Can metal roofing survive Seattle's windstorms?
Yes. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h). Seattle's typical gusts reach about 101 km/h, and the panels' mechanical interlock design transfers load evenly across the roof rather than relying on fasteners alone. The interlocking geometry also reduces the chance of wind lifting a corner and compromising the seal. When installed to specification by Interlock Metal Roofing (PNW) Inc.—serving the region since 1997—the system handles the Pacific Northwest's winter and spring storms without the vulnerability of asphalt shingles, which can tear or lift in high winds.
How much maintenance does a metal roof need in Seattle's rainy climate?
Interlock requires virtually no maintenance beyond occasional gutter cleaning—far less than asphalt, wood, or tile. Asphalt shingles deteriorate in Seattle's 1280 mm of annual rain and 21 freeze-thaw cycles, requiring periodic replacement and algae treatment. Wood shake splits and rots in the same wet conditions. Tile cracks and absorbs moisture. Aluminum's self-healing oxide layer and Alunar® 70% PVDF coating resist mildew and algae without chemical cleaners. The non-porous surface sheds water and debris, eliminating the ponding and decay cycles that plague traditional materials. Once installed, your metal roof works quietly for decades without intervention.
Can you install a metal roof over my existing shingles without removal?
Yes, in most cases. Interlock's extraordinary light weight—the Tile profile installs at ~0.59 lb/sq ft, about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—means no structural reinforcement is needed and it can roof over most existing asphalt or wood. The installation process involves securing the interlocking panels to the existing deck, which saves labor and disposal costs compared to full tear-off. Interlock Metal Roofing (PNW) Inc. will assess your roof structure during a free estimate to confirm suitability. If removal is necessary, the company manages the process efficiently, and the lightweight installation minimizes disruption to your home. Timeline typically spans 3–7 days depending on roof size and complexity.
What metal roofing styles does Interlock offer for Seattle homes?
Five profiles replicate traditional materials: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile, and Standing Seam. Each profile delivers authentic texture and shadow-line detail without the weight, fragility, or maintenance burden of the original materials. The Slate profile ($0.41 lb/sq ft) suits contemporary and period homes, while Cedar Shingle and Shake evoke Pacific Northwest character. Mediterranean Tile brings warmth to craftsman and cottage styles at ~0.59 lb/sq ft—96% lighter than actual tile, so no structural work is required. Standing Seam offers a clean, modern aesthetic popular in Seattle's newer neighborhoods. All profiles come in multiple colors and carry the same ICC-ES ESR-1790 code compliance and lifetime warranty, letting you choose the look your home deserves.
