I was in the trades my whole life, and I really thought that Jesse and his crew did a spectacular job from beginning to end. My wife and I are extremely happy with the roof. It is gorgeous. Everything was terrific. I am very pleased with everything about the roof. It was a lot of money, but I feel in my heart that it was worth it. I don't understand why people still use shingles, and the metal roof amazes me. I think you will see a lot more of them in the future once people catch on.

Review: January 19, 2018

Last March I started looking for a roofing company when I found Interlock Roofing. I was curious about what a metal roof would cost and the durability of the materials. To my surprise, although the cost of a metal roof is pricey it is well worth the extra money. I will never have to worry about having to replace a single shingle again! In the last 2 years, I have had a lot of repairs done on my roof using contractors who were not very good as I soon found out. I kept losing shingles with every wind that would pop up due to poor workmanship. Please believe me that a metal roof installed by Interlock is guaranteed to not come apart, fade or discolor or they will fix any issues found for the life of the roof although I do not expect to have to make a call to them if ever. Interlocks workers spent 2.5 days installing my roof working 11 hours per day. They are very dependable and knowledgeable. I would recommend this company 100 percent!

This is a trustworthy company. So far everything was on time. The job was completely done neatly. I don't see any areas where the company could have improved. I love it so far. I am just waiting to see what is going to happen, but so far so good. We are going to get a credit from my insurance company, because of the job that was done.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Mokena

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Mokena, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Mokena.

How does a metal roof handle Mokena's snow and ice buildup?

Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels shed snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt because the smooth, hard surface creates less friction and the panels resist the weight without degrading. Mokena receives about 70 cm of snow annually across roughly 81 freeze-thaw days, a cycle that cracks and curls asphalt shingles but leaves aluminum unaffected—the metal oxide layer self-heals from freeze stress. At weights between 0.41 and 0.59 lb/sq ft depending on profile, even the Mediterranean Tile (about 96% lighter than clay or concrete tile) requires no structural reinforcement, letting you install directly over your existing roof without costly frame upgrades.

Why don't freeze-thaw cycles damage aluminum roofing like they damage asphalt?

Asphalt becomes brittle in freeze cycles and cracks when moisture expands inside the shingle; aluminum expands and contracts uniformly across the entire panel with zero moisture absorption. Mokena experiences roughly 81 freeze-thaw days per year—enough to dramatically shorten asphalt life—but roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) flexes with temperature swings without splitting, cracking, or curling. The Guardian warranty covers cracking and curling for the lifetime of the original owner, a promise possible only because aluminum's crystal structure absorbs thermal stress without permanent damage or micro-fractures that asphalt cannot avoid.

Can an aluminum metal roof rust in a climate with over 1100 mm of rain annually?

No. Aluminum contains no iron, so it physically cannot rust—rust requires iron oxide, which aluminum simply does not have. When aluminum is scratched or abraded, it forms a new protective oxide layer automatically within hours, a process called self-healing. In Mokena's humid climate with 1102 mm of annual rainfall, this is a decisive advantage over steel roofing, which requires paint or galvanizing maintenance and corrodes when coatings fail. Interlock panels also receive Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating on both sides (warranted 30 years against chalking and fading per ASTM D4214/D2244), providing an additional barrier, though the aluminum substrate itself will outlast any coating.

Will a metal roof stand up to Mokena's wind gusts?

Yes—Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist sustained winds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed per specification. Mokena's typical gusts reach about 102 km/h, well within this rating. The interlocking design means each panel locks to its neighbors on all four edges, distributing wind load across the entire roof system rather than concentrating pressure on fasteners or seams. This engineering is verified under ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 (reissued 2025 for IBC/IRC compliance), and the mechanical interlock means a single panel cannot separate even under sustained high-wind conditions that would lift or tear asphalt shingles.

Does a metal roof get damaged by hail, and can it help with insurance rates?

Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Unlike asphalt, which bruises and loses granules in hail, aluminum's hardness absorbs impact without deformation or functional loss. Some insurers offer premium reductions for Class 4 impact-rated roofs because the risk of interior water damage drops sharply. While Mokena's climate data does not indicate frequent hail, the Class 4 rating provides peace of mind and documented impact resistance that most roofing products cannot match, potentially offsetting a portion of the material cost over the roof's life through lower insurance premiums.

What is the actual lifespan and warranty coverage on an Interlock metal roof?

The Guardian warranty is lifetime limited, non-prorated material coverage for the original owner—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It transfers once to the next owner with 50 years of coverage from completion, adding measurable value at resale. Interlock has manufactured these panels since 1998 and installed them from salt-air coastal homes to an Antarctic research station, with field performance confirming 30+ year lifespans. Because aluminum does not rot, rust, or split, and the 70% PVDF coating is warranted 30 years against fading (ASTM D4214), the actual material degradation timeline extends far beyond typical asphalt (15–20 years) or traditional tile, making this genuinely the last roof you buy for your home.

How does the upfront cost of metal roofing compare to the total cost over 30 or 40 years?

Metal roofing costs more upfront than asphalt but eliminates the roof-replacement cycle that makes asphalt expensive over decades. A typical asphalt roof lasts 15–20 years in climates like Mokena (1102 mm rain, 81 freeze-thaw days, 70 cm snow annually), requiring tear-off, disposal, and reinstallation two or three times before an Interlock roof needs replacement. Tear-off labor and landfill tipping fees add $1500–$3000 per cycle. Over 40 years, most homeowners will replace asphalt 2–3 times; an Interlock roof installs once and is still functioning with full warranty coverage. The Guardian's lifetime non-prorated warranty and 50-year transferable term also boost resale value and reduce long-term carrying costs compared to planned obsolescence built into asphalt pricing.

Can you install a metal roof directly over my existing asphalt shingles?

Yes. Interlock's extraordinary lightness—as little as 0.41 lb/sq ft for the Shingle profile—allows installation over most existing roofs without structural reinforcement. Because aluminum panels weigh roughly 96% less than concrete or clay tile, they exert minimal additional load on your home's framing. Installation begins with a solid deck check and may include removal of loose or damaged shingles; the installer then applies a moisture barrier and attaches the interlocking panels using manufacturer-specified fastening patterns. The process typically takes 2–4 days for a standard residential roof. This approach eliminates tear-off costs, reduces waste, and shortens disruption, making retrofit projects faster and more economical than full removal-and-reinstallation required for heavier roofing materials.

Is aluminum roofing better for the environment than asphalt shingles?

Aluminum roofing is approximately 95% recyclable at end of life, whereas asphalt shingles end up in landfills by the millions of tons annually because the asphalt binder and fiberglass mat cannot be separated economically. Over your roof's lifetime, an Interlock installation eliminates the tear-off-and-landfill cycle: one roof installed, no mid-life disposal, and aluminum reclaimed at demolition for smelting into new products. Mokena residents who choose metal avoid contributing millions of kilograms of construction waste while the CALGreen-verified reduced-maintenance profile (no algae treatments, no sealant reapplication) further lowers environmental impact compared to asphalt. The 30-year coating warranty (ASTM D4214/D2244) and multi-decade aluminum durability also mean fewer manufacturing cycles and raw material extraction over the same service period, multiplying the environmental gain.

Can an energy-efficiency metal roof reduce my summer cooling costs?

Yes—Interlock offers energy-efficient colors with thermal emissivity of 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny and other light tones), which reflects heat that asphalt absorbs and radiates into your home. Mokena receives about 3056 sunshine hours per year; on hot days, a reflective metal roof reduces attic temperature by 10–20 degrees Fahrenheit compared to dark asphalt, lowering air-conditioning run time. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating confirms this performance under standardized conditions. While heating is necessary 81 freeze-thaw days annually, the reflective benefit during warmer months can offset cooling costs enough to recoup part of your material premium. Light-colored profiles like Cedar Shingle and Slate in reflective finishes maximize this advantage without sacrificing the visual style you prefer.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Mokena’s climate?

Yes. Mokena averages about 70 cm of snow, 1102 mm of rain, roughly 81 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 102 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
