Review: January 19, 2018

Last March I started looking for a roofing company when I found Interlock Roofing. I was curious about what a metal roof would cost and the durability of the materials. To my surprise, although the cost of a metal roof is pricey it is well worth the extra money. I will never have to worry about having to replace a single shingle again! In the last 2 years, I have had a lot of repairs done on my roof using contractors who were not very good as I soon found out. I kept losing shingles with every wind that would pop up due to poor workmanship. Please believe me that a metal roof installed by Interlock is guaranteed to not come apart, fade or discolor or they will fix any issues found for the life of the roof although I do not expect to have to make a call to them if ever. Interlocks workers spent 2.5 days installing my roof working 11 hours per day. They are very dependable and knowledgeable. I would recommend this company 100 percent!

I was in the trades my whole life, and I really thought that Jesse and his crew did a spectacular job from beginning to end. My wife and I are extremely happy with the roof. It is gorgeous. Everything was terrific. I am very pleased with everything about the roof. It was a lot of money, but I feel in my heart that it was worth it. I don't understand why people still use shingles, and the metal roof amazes me. I think you will see a lot more of them in the future once people catch on.

The only thing that I feel that they could have improved on was getting the material here when it was supposed to but that was not Interlock Roofing's fault. This is the best roof I've ever had and I would recommend it to anyone.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Elwood

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Elwood, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Elwood.

Will an aluminum metal roof handle Elwood's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes. Aluminum expands and contracts with temperature changes, but its structure absorbs this stress without cracking or warping—unlike asphalt shingles or wood shakes that become brittle in repeated freeze-thaw. With about 81 freeze-thaw days per year in Will County and an average of 70 cm snow, aluminum's lack of moisture absorption means ice buildup won't split the material. The 3105-H24 alloy (ASTM B209) is specifically chosen for this cycling; it's installed on research stations in Antarctica for this reason.

How does a metal roof perform under Elwood's snow load?

Metal roofing sheds snow effectively because its smooth surface and shallow slope reduce adhesion compared to asphalt. Elwood receives roughly 70 cm of snow annually, and ice dams form when heat escapes through the roof—but aluminum's high solar reflectance (up to 0.55 on energy-efficiency colors) actually reduces roof warming, lowering ice-dam risk. Optional snow guards can be installed if you want to retain snow for insulation. The four-way interlocking panels (ESR-1790 code-approved) lock even under the stress of snow weight and freeze-thaw cycling.

Can Interlock metal roofing withstand Elwood's wind gusts?

Completely. Will County experiences typical gusts around 102 km/h, and Interlock carries a 120 mph (193 km/h) wind warranty when installed to specification. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels mechanically lock each edge, distributing wind load across the entire system rather than relying on fasteners alone. This is why the design earned ICC-ES ESR-1790 approval for IBC/IRC wind standards. Even in severe spring storms, the panel edges remain sealed and anchored.

Why won't an aluminum metal roof rust like steel roofing?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. Instead, it develops a thin oxide layer that self-heals when scratched—a property iron-based steel roofing cannot replicate. In Elwood's humid climate with about 1,102 mm of annual rainfall, this matters. The roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) is also coated with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon on both sides, warranted 30 years against corrosion and fading (ASTM D4214). Steel roofing, by contrast, requires paint maintenance and eventually shows rust at edges and fasteners.

Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof?

No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's aluminum panels are extraordinarily light—the Mediterranean Tile profile installs at only 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. This allows installation directly over most existing roofs without adding load. Compare that to traditional tile or slate, which require substantial framing upgrades. Elwood's homes can accept the weight of a new metal roof as an overlay, saving thousands in structural work and reducing waste from complete tear-offs.

What's the hail rating on Interlock metal roofing, and will my insurance notice?

Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4—the highest impact rating available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This non-combustible aluminum construction often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts because claims for hail, wind, and fire damage are extremely rare. Many carriers recognize the UL 2218 Class 4 rating and the 120 mph wind warranty as loss-prevention features. Contact your insurer with the product specs; the combination of impact resistance and the lifetime limited Guardian Warranty (non-prorated for the original owner) typically improves your coverage profile.

How much maintenance does an aluminum metal roof actually require?

Minimal. Asphalt shingles need regular inspection for cracking and curling, especially after Elwood's 81 annual freeze-thaw cycles. Wood shakes split and rot. Tile cracks. Aluminum doesn't do any of these. The Alunar PVDF coating resists chalking and fading for 30 years, and the non-rusting aluminum alloy eliminates corrosion monitoring. Occasional gutter cleaning and tree debris removal are all you need. The CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance requirements, making this a true set-it-and-forget-it roof for Will County's variable climate.

What's the real lifespan of Interlock metal roofing, and what does the warranty cover?

The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It's also one-time transferable, extending 50 years of coverage to the next owner from completion date. Unlike prorated warranties that shrink with time, this covers 100% replacement cost for the original homeowner. Interlock has manufactured aluminum roofing since 1998; panels installed in 1998 are still performing. Asphalt shingles last 15–20 years; this roof outlasts three generations of shingles, eliminating the landfill cycle.

Is aluminum metal roofing fire-safe, and does Elwood care about that rating?

Yes. Aluminum is non-combustible and Interlock offers Class A fire classification—the highest rating under the Underwriters' Laboratories standard. This rating is included in the ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation (reissued 2025 for current IBC/IRC codes). Some homeowners insurance carriers offer discounts for Class A-rated roofs. While Elwood is not in a high wildfire zone, the non-combustible rating and UL 2218 Class 4 impact resistance combine to reduce fire and hail claims dramatically compared to asphalt or wood. This lowers your risk profile in the eyes of underwriters.

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost over asphalt in Elwood?

Yes, over the roof's full lifespan. Metal roofing costs more initially, but asphalt requires replacement every 15–20 years. Elwood's 81 freeze-thaw days per year, 70 cm annual snow, and 102 km/h gusts accelerate asphalt degradation. Over 50 years, you'll install three asphalt roofs (tear-off, labor, disposal) versus one aluminum roof. Aluminum also qualifies for published solar-reflectance listing on select colors—reducing summer cooling costs in the 3,056 annual sunshine hours. Insurance discounts for the UL 2218 Class 4 rating and the 120 mph wind warranty further offset initial cost. The non-prorated Guardian Warranty covering the original owner for life removes replacement uncertainty.
