Review: January 19, 2018

Last March I started looking for a roofing company when I found Interlock Roofing. I was curious about what a metal roof would cost and the durability of the materials. To my surprise, although the cost of a metal roof is pricey it is well worth the extra money. I will never have to worry about having to replace a single shingle again! In the last 2 years, I have had a lot of repairs done on my roof using contractors who were not very good as I soon found out. I kept losing shingles with every wind that would pop up due to poor workmanship. Please believe me that a metal roof installed by Interlock is guaranteed to not come apart, fade or discolor or they will fix any issues found for the life of the roof although I do not expect to have to make a call to them if ever. Interlocks workers spent 2.5 days installing my roof working 11 hours per day. They are very dependable and knowledgeable. I would recommend this company 100 percent!

This is a trustworthy company. So far everything was on time. The job was completely done neatly. I don't see any areas where the company could have improved. I love it so far. I am just waiting to see what is going to happen, but so far so good. We are going to get a credit from my insurance company, because of the job that was done.

Review: December 31, 2014Completion: October 31, 2014

I was in the trades my whole life, and I really thought that Jesse and his crew did a spectacular job from beginning to end. My wife and I are extremely happy with the roof. It is gorgeous. Everything was terrific. I am very pleased with everything about the roof. It was a lot of money, but I feel in my heart that it was worth it. I don't understand why people still use shingles, and the metal roof amazes me. I think you will see a lot more of them in the future once people catch on.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Shorewood

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Shorewood, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Shorewood.

Will a metal roof hold up to Illinois winters with freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes — aluminum's self-healing oxide layer actually thrives through freeze-thaw stress. Shorewood experiences about 81 freeze-thaw days annually, which causes asphalt to crack and wood shakes to split. Interlock's roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) expands and contracts without fracturing because it has no grain structure like wood and no tar binder like asphalt. The four-way interlocking panels and your existing deck beneath absorb movement together. That's why Interlock panels have survived Antarctic research stations and 26 years of coastal freeze-thaw cycles since 1998.

How does metal roofing handle Shorewood's snow and ice buildup?

Interlock's smooth, slick-surface panels actually shed snow faster than asphalt or wood, reducing ice-dam risk. You'll receive about 70 cm of snow annually in Shorewood, often compressed into a few storms. The lightweight design — Slate profiles weigh just 0.41 lb/sq ft — means no structural reinforcement is needed, even when snow accumulates. Optional snow guards (installed per spec) control controlled slide-off. The sealed four-way interlock prevents water infiltration if ice does back up temporarily. For heavy snow climates, metal's low weight and fast-shedding geometry outperform heavier materials that trap moisture at the eaves.

Are metal roof panels secure in high winds and gusts?

Absolutely. Interlock panels are warranted to resist winds up to 120 mph when installed to specification, and the four-way interlocking system is engineered to handle that load. Shorewood's typical gust speeds reach 102 km/h (about 63 mph), well within the rated capacity. The interlocking geometry means each panel is mechanically locked on all four edges to its neighbors, distributing wind load across the entire roof plane rather than depending on fasteners alone. UL and ICC-ES testing (ESR-1790, 2025) validate this performance. Even in the occasional severe storm, the warranty covers wind damage if installation follows spec.

Can a metal roof rust, and why choose aluminum over steel?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. Steel roofing rusts unless coated, and coatings eventually fail. Interlock uses roofing-grade aluminum alloy (ASTM B209), which forms a self-healing oxide layer when scratched — the layer re-forms within hours or days, stopping corrosion before it starts. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish on both sides adds 30-year protection against salt-air and industrial pollutants. Over a 50+ year lifespan, you'll never face rust stains, rust holes, or the hidden corrosion that shortens steel roofs. In Shorewood's 1102 mm annual rainfall and freeze-thaw environment, aluminum's immunity to oxidation is a fundamental advantage.

Will hail damage a metal roof, and can I claim it on insurance?

Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating — the highest available — and the Guardian Warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 means the panel withstood a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet without cracking or denting permanently. Many insurers offer discounts for Class 4-rated roofs because claims are rare. After a hail event, document any visible damage and contact your insurer; Interlock's impact resistance often results in a lower deductible payout or waived claim. The lightweight aluminum (Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft) also reduces structural load, which some carriers recognize as lower overall risk.

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?

Yes, when you calculate the full cost over the roof's life. Asphalt roofs cost less initially but last 15-25 years and may require repairs at years 10-15. Interlock's Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited and non-prorated for the original owner, transferable for 50 years to the next owner — meaning you buy your roof once. Over 50 years, you'd replace asphalt 2-3 times (material and labor), while aluminum needs zero structural repairs. Add in Shorewood's 81 annual freeze-thaw days and 70 cm snow, which stress asphalt shingles, and metal's durability becomes cost-saving. The lightweight profile also eliminates structural reinforcement costs that slate or tile require. For most homeowners, the last roof they install is the cheapest over time.

Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof?

No. Interlock's aluminum panels are extraordinarily light — the Mediterranean Tile profile, which replicates heavy ceramic tile, weighs just 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. Slate profiles weigh 0.41 lb/sq ft. Most homes' existing framing can support these loads without any structural work. This is a major cost advantage over authentic slate or tile, which require reinforced beams and trusses. ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 confirms the lightweight design is code-compliant across building types. You can often install Interlock directly over your existing roof (asphalt shingles or tar paper), saving tear-off labor and landfill fees — another cost and time advantage.

Will a metal roof help lower my cooling costs in summer?

Yes, energy-efficient Interlock colors reflect heat that asphalt absorbs, reducing cooling load on hot days. The Aged Copper Penny color has initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84, rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council. Shorewood receives about 3056 sunshine hours per year, so heat reflection compounds across the season. Metal's smooth surface also allows air to circulate underneath (especially with proper ventilation), further reducing heat buildup in the attic. While Shorewood's mean temperature is modest at 10.8°C, summer peaks still benefit from reflective coatings. If you install dark colors for aesthetic reasons, you trade some cooling efficiency — but even dark metal roofs outperform dark asphalt because they don't absorb as much heat into the building envelope.

What's the installation timeline for a metal roof in Shorewood?

Installation typically takes 2-5 days depending on roof size and complexity, much faster than slate or tile installation. Interlock Metal Roofing has served the region since 2001 and handles Shorewood installations regularly. The process begins with a full roof inspection and measurement; if your existing roof is sound, the crew can often install directly over asphalt shingles, eliminating the tear-off delay. Panels are delivered pre-cut to specification, and the four-way interlocking system means installation is straightforward — each panel locks securely without complex flashing. Weather matters: installers work year-round in Shorewood, but heavy rain (about 92 mm/month average) or ice may cause short delays. Once complete, your roof is watertight and fully warranted. A full replacement typically costs less time than a traditional tear-off.

Is aluminum roofing actually more sustainable than asphalt shingles?

Yes. Interlock panels are approximately 95% recyclable at end-of-life; aluminum retains value in scrap markets indefinitely. Asphalt shingles are not recyclable — your old roof goes to a landfill, where it occupies space for decades and leaches adhesives into groundwater. Each time you replace asphalt (every 15-25 years), that's another tear-off cycle and landfill deposit. With Interlock's lifetime warranty, you install once and never contribute to the tear-off-to-landfill cycle. Aluminum is also energy-efficient to recycle — recycling aluminum uses about 5% of the energy required to produce new aluminum. Over 50 years, choosing metal in Shorewood means zero roof waste to landfill and an end-of-life asset worth recovering rather than disposing. CALGreen building standards recognize metal's reduced maintenance (no treatments, no sealers) as environmentally beneficial.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Shorewood’s climate?

Yes. Shorewood averages about 70 cm of snow, 1102 mm of rain, roughly 81 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 102 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
